Looks like another Conservative minority.

Not a whole lot has changed in four year, wow. I'm a little surprised though, I guess people are a little scarred these days and go for the safe vote.

Not my jam, but oh well.

Any thoughts?

I voted Bloc, but there was no point of voting for anything else, my riding is completely Bloc anyhow
 
the bloc certainly had a strong showing..... the NDP got embarassed (good, stay out of our country you communist jerks)

harper will do well for the country with a recession around the corner
 
This is not exactly the outcome I was hoping for. I wanted about 7-8 fewer CON seats and 7-8 more LIB seats, but I am pleased with the NDP gains on the evening and pretty surprised at how well the BQ has done. I am also somewhat gratified to see the Dion LIB party smacked around for its utter failure to create an identity and a party that anyone could be expected to get behind. The LIB leadership convention will apparently be held in May in Vancouver... and when it does I will be walking around with a big Ignatieff pin on my shirt. It will probably be around 2 years before the next election, and when that happens, it will be time for another LIB majority.

All in all, this election night was a boring end to a boring campaign, but it's a result everyone can be comfortable with. There's no real cause to be frightened of a CON minority government, so let's get parliament back in session and see if they can actually manage to come up with any measures to deal with the current economic crisis.

 
i didnt even want to vote, all the candidates were complete shit. who the hell wants dion running our country hes a weak little girl. I just let my brother choose my vote for my.

and harper fuck that guy hes a sleeze ball.

In the end this election was a waste of time and money. I don't think it should have even been called at this point.

I would have liked to have seen more liberal seats. Personally I think this election could have been a turning point for Canada, but I don't think the Conservatives will distance us from the States in terms of exports. I'm not a fan of Dion, but I think a Liberal minority would have been the best solution for this election. In the past I've supported NDP, but Layton was just a bit too much this time for me.

This election had the lowest turnout ever, something like 51%, kinda sad.

 
Absolutely disgusting voter turnout. I love the person's response a couple up from me, didn't vote, but can't believe the sleezeball Harper got in again. Good for you buddy, way to do your part.

This election was not a waste of money, after seeing the results from BC the Tories would have had a majority if they didn't cut $45 million from the arts. Pretty sad that something so minor could throw off Quebec and cost this country.

I am satisfied with a stronger minority but disgusted with the abysmal voter turnout and frustrated with Quebec and the Bloc.
 
I have a story. I went in today to vote. I had to register cause I just turned 18 in August. They said I need proof of my place of living. I don't. I'm a student. They said I needed proof of me going to school then. I didn't have either, and because I am from another town, it was nearly impossible for me to vote, because my mother has all that info about 8 hours away from where I am.

I was really pissed off. When I turned 18, I was able to do two things. Vote, and buy porn. I can't even do one of the two.

Maybe that's why only 51% voted?
 
well my friend, I was in an almost identical situation. But I brought a post sent from the bank with my new address on it, and I got to vote.

So now you know how :)
 
58%, not 51. Still pretty poor, but not THAT bad. Explicable largely because of the concurrent American election and the completely uninteresting nature of ours.

Ignatieff in 2010, gentlemen. Until then.
 
its sad that i heard probably 200% more about the American election than the Canadian, damn our Americanized world
 
that's no excuse, you should have read the elections.ca website like I did a few days ahead, I had my license and student ID and was allowed to vote
 
Can someone explain to me why Canada is so incredibly concerned with the American election (enough that Canadians will tell me all about my own country...).

 
because your government influences our government directly, for example, if it weren't for the US, we wouldn't be in afghanistan, i do agree that it is somewhat of a nato mission, but still, your market basically dtermines the strength of ours since we import and export with you...not to mention the implications of NAFTA, both US candidates have completely different opinions on nafta, so in a sense, your election is much more important for us than our own
 
I've vote liberal in quebec even if dion is the worst leader ever! (ignatief would have been better) the liberal guy in my town is good, I read is article in the town paper and I didn't waste my vote. I don't like people voting for BQ cause they always do the same at every elction: just talkshit about the leading party and his leader. It's easy to do that and Quebecers think that just because it's called Bloc québécois, that this is better for them and all the others are just english speaking people that don't care about Québec.
 
i know, i was unprepared. although, i dont have a student ID yet. nor do i have anyother sort of documentation saying i am a student, other than my books, but that doesnt work. I could have had my landlord come with me to say that yes, i am living here, but it was her sons birthday yesterday, and she was out all last night, and still not home.
 
Although the bloc will never get into power, it is important to have a voice in ottawa, having 50 bloc leaders in ottawa is great for quebec, because it gives them a certain amount of power for the Quebec agenda, and in this election, it wasn't a wasted vote in this election because we didn't want harper to get the majority and we didn't want Dion in power
 
Seriously... what could have been if it were not for some overblown issue.

I reckon it didnt affect the result that much though. They got a lot of media attention but, it's not as if the people who were up and rallying against the conservatives were ever going to vote for them anyways. And it's not as though the conservatives would have gotten the extra 10 seats they needed in Quebec.

That said, I hate people who refer to themselves as an "artist". You can be a painter, a sculpter, whatever you like; but the unsuccessful "artists" who rely on government and corporate grants really need a change of careers. Maybe there's a reason why people arent buying their work...

What im unimpressed with is how the Montreal area manages to be consitenstly as stupid each election. The whole thing just proves that old habits die hard. Although I absolutely hate the New Democrats, I'm happy they got a seat on the island. If nothing else, it shows that change is possible in this stalemate liberal vs BQ dumpster.

To be fair, their is some rational in voting liberal on parts of the island. The Bloc often comes in a close-ish second in some areas; having people split the vote liberal-conservative would give the bloc the seat.

who's fault is that? if you're going to vote, you make sure you know what you need to do so...i'll bet you showed up at the registry to get your drivers license with nothing but a pocketful of lint too.

you guys think 58% is bad? we had something like 30% in the last alberta election...that's pathetic.
 
you could have vote for NPD or Liberal cause anyway they couldnt win for sure, but the liberal representant in Quebec are good people, I know that bloc is the "voice of quebec" in ottawa, but voting for liberal or npd doesnt mean that you the represantant is gonna say: well fuck my county, I don't care, I care for the rest of canada
 
people like you who dont vote yet complain about the government really bother me. if you have opinions or any criticism about the government, vote. otherwise, you have no right to complain or criticize and u did not do ur part.

That is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

And I kind of agree with J.D. on this shit. The Liberals really need a new leader, Dion seems like a good intelligible guy and all, but no way is he fit to run this country at the very least because of the language barrier. No way was he ever going to win either at the very least because of the language barrier too. It will be interesting to see Ignatieff shred it.

It was kind of a lame election though, hopefully the next one will be more hype.

 
I sometimes wish that our system was a bit more like the states. Because of the fucking bloc no one is going to win a majority in a long ass time. In the west we will never vote liberal and Quebec will never vote conservative. So it's going to be flip flopping minority governments thanks to the fucking bullshit bloc.

And to the girl from newfoundland. Do you guys listen to every word your premier says? The guy has a consevative provincial party.
 
its those people who are "unsuccessful" artists that become the top artists shortly after. IF their all so unsuccessful then why do we have so many of them in quebec. Quebec is by FAR the most culturaly rich province of canada. These funds not only raise our artists to new levels, but they give us international recognition all over the world. Thats not even begining to consider how much revenue it creats for canada. Harper and most of canada constantly shits on quebec because we have COMPLETELY different values. You didnt want quebec to take away the majority from the consirvatives, dont do cuts in culture and put our kids in jail. In quebec we love our children and having some chill out time after work to watch shows and all sorts of arts from here. Harper sais he wants to cut culture to save money in a time of economical crisis..... thats cool but then your spending tonnes more to keep a 14 year old in jail for the rest of his life. A reforme of the voting system like lots of you seem to want it, is completely un democratic. The system we have now represents every province evenly. Quebec has a bigger say than most other provinces because we have more people, that is why we can make such a difference. Changing this would only take away power from quebec and making it weaker that it is fair. Quebec votes completely different than the rest of canada because we are a different people....... harper needs to know that and realise that we are enough people to sway him far away from a majority.

pretty much all the money artists get from grants goes right back into the economy, because they have to buy art supplies, food and pay rent, so even if they are "unsuccessful" it isn't necessarily bad for the economy, and the reason there IS grants for them at all is so they can eventually become "successful" Selling art isn't necessarily about how good or bad you're art is, it's about the connections you have and the amount of exposure you get, a little bit like the ski world.
