The odd time that we actually use "eh?" we are really just adding a "hey?" (ie. What do you think about that, hey?) to the end of the sentence. However some people from bum fuck Ontario and Saskatchewan, and also many of the red necks from Alberta, cause the "H" sound to become indecipherable due to their bumpkin type accents.

I never hear it said as "hey" ever.

umm, I say "eh" all the time, exactly in the way the stereotype is portrayed. And I don't live in a small bumfuck Ontario town. Most of the people I know say that actually.

"hey" is a west coast / bc thing. when I'm in vancouver it's the only time I ever hear hey instead of eh
