so weve decided to go to smuggs this year on march break and my dad thinks that if were canadian citizens and have proof of that, we dont need a passport to get into the united states by land (were driving there). is this true? i dont have enough time right now to research it so any help would be awesome.

theres a law that goes in effect that you have to have a passport in like 2008 for Americans to go to Canada. i went to sutton through the place near jay with my brother and all they asked for as id.

from the department of state website:

"As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries. "

i was just getting my passport for spring break. their office is so backed up that they wont be here in time for break. but the gov lady personally told us that you dont need a passport to DRIVE across teh border until 2008.

going from US to canada you can have either a passport or ID and birth certificate. At least thats what my friends that go to canada tell me.

we go to canada for one of my crew races and getting across the boarder is a hassel with 2 buses full of underage kids haha. everyone has to get a parental waiver with approval of travel and stuff. good times.

When I went to jay peaks they asked us to show them our passports when crossing the border

I live right on the border of Canada and all you need is id. some thing like your drivers lisence or a state id and birth cirtificate. But next year you will need a passport to go across the border

i go from montreal to the states all the time, you need proof that your from canada, you dont need your passport, i usually just have my drivers liscense and its alright but they can be dicks and say that they dont know were you were born and if your a canadian citizen and shit.

how bout you read what i typed which said that i didnt have time. i have time now that its 8:30 on a sunday evening, right when theyre closed!

All that is required is a valid form of photo ID (drivers license etc) They can sometimes ask for further proof so always good to have a second piece (birth certificate etc) but no a passport is not required till next year.

Just bring a photo ID and maybe a birth certificate and you'll be good.

When i went over the border into Canada they didnt ID us just asked where we were going and saw skis and let us through. On the way back they asked for ID's and let us through.

Passport is only if your flying.

You'll be OK to drive across if you don't have a passport but you have your BirthCert and Drivers License, or other Photo ID. It's flying that you need a passport for now.

Although, if you do have a passport you are a little less likely to get deported to syria & tortured...

alright, sorry to bump this.. but i'm having a mini-heart attack.

i knew that the new passport rule or whatever was supposed to go into effect in 08, but much like a lot of the things our government tries to implement, it was being pushed back.

i have ALL intentions of scooting up to montreal tomorrow and have already booked a room BECAUSE i was under the impression, back off the link included, that i could get through with my combination of birth certificate (the original document), college i.d., and driver's liscense. but i just talked to some girl on my floor who was planning on heading up this weekend, and she said her parents called someone (idk, girls an idiot) and they told her you needed a PASSPORT to get across. considering i'm to be leaving in a little over 12 hrs, i'm freaking out and ANY help would be appreciated.

wow..

i went to tremblant last year and we needed passports.

dont tell me your stupid enough to think that WE need them to get in and out

but you dont..?
