Canada Season 21/22

Some questions:

How much disruption did covid cause to the 20/21 ski season in Canada? Were most resorts operating?

What is the likelihood that the 21/22 season goes ahead relatively smoothly? Canada has a very high vaccination rate and seems to be on track to hit the 75% margin before the next ski season begins.

Partner and I are considering leaving Australia because our government is incompetent and we won’t get a vaccine until 2022 at the earliest — so we’d rather try our luck getting one in Canada and working the season.

Canada skiing, at least in Ontario had it rough last winter. All resorts got shut down for awhile during the peak of their season which financially will carry over into this season unfornatly. Not sure about western resorts though which is probably where you're trying to go.

Barring a variant to which our vaccinations don't offer protection, it's looking like ski resorts will definitely be open as usual by this winter. Maybe some reduced food services, but my money is on the lifts all running at full capacity.

literally had no effect on resorts in Alberta other than the while mask thing. BC’s season for most places was cut pretty short

Whistler was all time mate. It snowed a ton and no one had covid. Come bump chairs and party in the village. It's the dream!

Whistler shut down early 2 seasons in a row lol

The best months of the year to go park skiing are in Spring from March-May. Wont be surprised if they do it again next year to save money. Apparently they don’t make any profit from staying open that late anyways.

That was a poorly executed joke trying to convince the aussies to go to Whistler instead of the interior.

My season wasn't disrupted too much. Whistler closing early was a shame, but I wouldn't be surprised if covid was an excuse for them to close and save money. As far as I know, the glacier and momentum aren't running this summer, while mtn biking is still happening so it sounds like a money decision.

As for Grouse, covid generally made things busier. People generally had less things to do so they went skiing more, and it got especially busy in the spring after other Canadian resorts shut down and we had skiers coming from all over Canada. Still, it was nice to see new faces in the park and meet some new people. Next year should be more chill, hopefully they get rid of the reservation system.

I kinda liked the reservation system, you can get an idea of how busy it's going to be ahead of time

pfizer and AZ both offer protection to delta up around 95%

is there another variant I should be worried about?

Vermont also has great skiing and plenty of other options and might be a great place to try to get a vaccine. Right now its looking like there will.be absolutely no regulations or changes for next season maybe dead of winter mask mandate but it's seems unlikely. They lead the US in vaccination rates at 64% fully and 75% one dose so that may make it easier and more likely to get a solid ski season.

Pretty unaffected in Alberta except for long lift lines at lake Louise and an initial long gondola wait at sunshine. Other then that, besides the bars being shut down, was business as usual.

Alberta is also fully opening up in 2 weeks, which is absolutely mental imo. Our provincial government is real dumb here but the skiing will be good next year

Yeah some of the sunshine gondola waits were like 4+ hours on the weekends. And the whole no singles in the lift line really slowed things down for the chairs too.

Considering we had the worst case rate in North America a couple months ago to now being the first province in Canada to remove all restrictions is wild lol

Mr. Kenny really wants to yeehaw lmao

You cant come into the country unless youre vaccinated so good luck with that

People have been allowed in with work exemptions without a vaccination. I’m just going off what your own department of immigration has said mate. Tourists are a different story I know. Australia has almost 0 community transmission.

BC was chill other than Whis and Big White. Revy closed a few days early cause their ski patrol got covid and they had to call it. But most places got through with somewhat normal vibes. huge pow days parking lots would get full and people would get turned away. With the vaccine, I bet it's pretty normal this winter. At least im telling myself that anyway hah

it was pretty much fine other than longer than usual lift lines and I had to keep my soggy balaclava over my nose

i also don’t think vail resorts was actually limiting tickets because whis was a lot busier than i ever remember it being

i just remembered that whistler actually had to close early so there’s that but i heard they were losing money anyway

I have worked at castle mtn resort the last 4 years and skied every single day each year, this year wasn't much different other than having to wear a face covering in the base area and at the top of lifts. had some compliance issues with guests which is to be expected. it was actually really busy on some weekends. stayed open till the end then i went to sunshine for the last month of the season and it has no issues staying open to the end. 155 days this season with no issues. 2021-2022 season i think is going to be almost normal. for example the bar wasn't open most of the season, wasn't allowed to hangout with friends so much outside of skiing etc etc.

You mean pfizer/biontech and moderna? Astrazenica barely broke 70% efficacy in trials and isn't available in the US cuz fda wants more data..... Actually I think you're referring to AZ preventing hospitalization cuz that was reported at 90%. Otherwise that vaccine is doo doo compared to others.

But op just come to the US and stroll through a southern state. We got millions of surplus and they're literally paying people to get vaccinated in places.

This sounds like a joke but it’s true, op. I imagine you could get an esta visa to USA (I imagine we will open before Canada and gov is still giving out esta) and take a trip long enough in USA to get vaccinated and head to Canada after. Now, if you have the funds for that - that’s another story

you don’t have to be a citizen or permanent resident to get it

Nothing really to add besides castle rules and more people need to know about it

We are tentatively investigating options now. We’d love the chance to get vaccinated.

U sound fucking weird, and ur partner prob is too if she is with u

Alberta's ski season went on essentially fine, like the others said some long lift lines, Banff is essentially 100% australian population anyway so it'll be like you never left home.

yeah people really couldn't figure it out. show up at 8am, wait in line till11am, skiing by 12. OR sleep in, show up at 1130am, wait in no line, skiing by 12.

yeah if u are almost 2 hours away like me, sunshine was never worth it this year. either way only get 4 hours of skiing

yo so partner and I have managed to get 1 dose each of Astra Zeneca and we’ll be fully vaccinated by October.

looking at Banff but it seems like a hassle to have to drive everywhere?

Pretty sure locals get a free shuttle pass with the seasons pass or something. Actually makes it better since you don't have to worry about parking at the hill and you can have as many beers as you want

This is how I know you’re a true ski bum. Respect.
