Canada and Britain

Can anyone give me some reasons for why Canada shouldn't abolish the Monarchy and become a republic for an essay I have to right. The help would be great

thanks

that's wierd. i thought we were like... a part of the commonwealth, so were semi connected to them, but like we do our own thing... you know?

well I can see you all know and have alot to say about the canadian government thank you soo much

this alliance with brittain is just some shit. They don't influence a shit in canada, the only thing is that we have the queens face on our money

The Queen is purely a representative figure. She has no ties to politics and such. The only power she has is to appoint the governor general, who has the power to veto Canadian law. Correct me if I'm wrong, last time I took any of this stuff was in grade 11, way back then...

well,

we have the security of their support in case we went to war

they are a good trade partner of ours

thats about all i can think of

it would take a lot of money and time on everyones part to rid ourselves of the monarchy when it really has no significant influence on our lives.

because all canadian prime ministers are way too ugly to be on the back of the coin.

But in all seriousness, maybe because British loyalists from the states moved to canada so ties have always been strong.

I believe BC was Britain's last colony to seperate.

Strong ally, Canada supported Britain in both world wars, hopefully they'd do the same.

Don't think thats what you were looking for , but maybe it helps.

^that's not entirely true, yes the govenor general is MOSTLY a figurehead, but they still have to sign off on any bill passed by parliament. Fun fact, the queen also has the power to dismantle the Canadian government and call another election if she deems it to be the right course of action. This has never happened in canada, but it did happen in australia (I can't remember the exact date off the top of my head, but i'll look it up if anyone is really curious), and after the forced elections, the former ruling party lost the election by quite a large margin. If this is still usefull for the thread creator, some argue that having the queen as a figurehead is beneficial because it gives canadians a national symbol that is above and unacociated with politics, and therefore less socially divisive. Also, because of the powers that the crown still has in canada, some argue that it is a check on the ruling party's power, that even in a majority government there is still a non-partisan body who can step in to readjust the situation if the current government is not acting with the will of the people.

Because the British monarchy has even less impact on how Canada is run than they do on how Britain is run? Because it would be an awful, expensive, time consuming mess of a job to try to reconstruct the political system in a new way (which no one would be able to agree on), especially given the one we have is working well enough as it is? Basically, because it would be a complete waste of time and resources? Yeah those things.

yep. Also trade reasons probably. even though very little of Canada's trade is with Britain. Keeping good political relations is important.

Thats true. There are tons of old people that pretty much worship the queen. Especially in Newfoundland, cause it was a British colony until 1949.
