Can you disaster a rail without kinks or a gap before the rail?

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

If I hit a straight rail with so much speed I gap the first 4 or 5 meters of a 6m down rail, is it a disaster? If it isn't a disaster, then what it is called?

Discuss.

That's my opinion as well but two of my snowboarder friends (40 or so years on board combined) were very strict about this and said the rail needs to be kinked or a big gap between the kicker and the rail.

Makes no sense to me but this is why I'm asking you guys :)

I personally feel like you can but it can’t be ohhh I gapped like 3ft down the rail it’s gotta be the majority of the rail

Yeah same. Feel like you have to gap pretty much the whole thing and basically just tap the end of the rail

Was gonna say the same shit, I’d say you gotta gap at least 4/6ths of the rail for it to be a disaster
 
No. I wouldn't even consider a large gap to a rail a disaster if that is the only way to hit the rail. You gotta gap over a change in the rail (kink or drop). What you are describing is just going fast.
 
Yeah unless there’s a gap of minimum 4ft from the kicker to the rail then I think you’re just hitting a rail with speed. On the bright side though, hitting a rail with speed looks cool so you do you op

I feel like if it’s a normal down rail or something then you can’t disaster it. The trick name implies something will go super wrong if you come up short and for that you need a gap or a kink to make it dangerous. Otherwise you’re just skiing fast which is still cool but it’s not it’s own trick.

I agree with your definition. However, just cus there is rail doesn't make it not dangerous. I once was doing this flat-down rail by disastering to the down, but when finally trying to hit the flat first, I crashed and hit my head pretty badly.
 
No. You can't disaster anything without a kink. You can gap to rail, or you can tap, but a disaster by definition is over a kink.

I agree. Its called a "Disaster" because if you come up short you are going to be in a world of hurt. Simply going big and hitting the end of a rail doesnt count. You need to go over the sketchy part as thats the point of the trick.

Its kind of like saying, "If I hit a giant step down in the back country can I call it a road gap?"
 
Mike Hornbeck in Sunny did like a blunt grabbed air to lip on the end of the rail, I'd call that a disaster. I don't think it's about the rail, it's about the first part of the trick making it look like you're gonna clip the rail by accident and get wrecked.
 
I think a disaster has to be on a kinked rail. If you have a down rail with a 5-10 foot gap I call that a gap to down.

I've always treated it as if you clear a large majority of the rail it still counts. But let's get real here, we are debating over a vocab term. Gap to down or disaster, you still go big and probably crack your edges.

bro definitely slipped out after trying to gap 41/46th's of a flat rail
 
Back in the day our park used to set up flat boxes and in order to make them ride on they built like pretty big wedges up to them. So if you hit them with speed you could get enough air to grab, or shifty, spin on or what ever. I’d say if you have time in the air to do something I’d count it as a disaster.
