Can skiing go further?

i hate montoya, but, I think what I said is somewhat what is going to happen. Style is easy when your not goin that big, but yo hold it together over huge stuff is stick, so eventually a 60 foooter will seem small and people will need to move up.

I think the sport of skiing will always progess. Noone saw The New Canadian Air Force coming 5-10 years before they made their debute. No one saw Armada springing up when all of the Canadian Air Force was riding on Salomon. I guess my point is that progression is natural. I never in a million years thought I'd ever see anyone hit Pyramid Gap switch and land switch with no rotation (Andy Mahre's zero in War!) I guess my point is that skiing will always progress. We came from being used as a means of transportation in order to hunt and get through snow faster than walking into butter 270 onto an urban rail in Troy, New York and switch cork 5's over Chads at 54 mph. Skiing will progress, the more important question i think is are we destined to be the 50 year old, old-timers that think twister spreads are sick and ski on nothing shorter than 210?

I think skiing has a long way to go, before it slows down, but it will definately slow. 5 years ago going 15 feet out in a half pipe was huge, and dropins to pipes aren't even that big yet and can still get way bigger for more speed, i think pipe is going to be big in the future cause its super hard. i would like to see pipe in corperated into slopestyle comps, skiing is eventually going to be all about consistency.

as for all the kids on twins who ride around now... i dont want to sound like a dick, but most of them cant do shit, and its cool that they are having fun and are interested in skiing but snowboarding is already mainstream because of kids who just ride down busting occasional straight airs, and i understand that its scary to start learning tricks but i think it will make skiing just like snowboarding in the long run, because it WAS "underground" and it will become mainstream.

but like are we gonna get to the point where we are gonna see people skiing rediculous bc lines switch, doing switch 7s off features in the lines? I dont know about that. There's a point where things become a little impossible. That's why just going bigger and spinning more isn't the answer. We should progress in our films, in our creativity, in our style, in our attitudes etc. Not nessecarily just bigger jump bigger jumps.

How is snowboarding keeping there tricks from staying the same? or are they just doing the same tricks that they have been doing for the past couple of years? Skiing will grow there is no doubt about that never to the size of snowboarding. The most growth will be when skiing enters the olympics in what ever year that will be and get a ton of exposure.

I think what makes out sport hard to progress is that when snowboarding came out, it was a totally new thing, that means that there were very core companies starting the revolution. In our case we already have so many ski companies trying to have a freeskiing aspect to them, I think we need to get more with core companies solely focused on freeskiing and the progression thereof.

I think skiing is sick as it is. I am not going to be all pro active about it I am just going to HAVE FUN cuz that is what skiing is all about. If you are not having fun ur doin something wrong. If ur having fun then just go with it!

Shane McConkey raised the point well, taking tricks to the big mountain is the evolution of freestyle skiing. but where do the big mountain riders go from here? unfortunately shane's answer was not enlightening, hurling your carcass off a cliff is not skiing, even if you went off the cliff with skis on!

if u r connected to a chute, hundreds of feet up in the air, you are no longer skiing (looks cool though, ill give him that!) FACT

which is simply an evolution on base jumping.

as far as skiing goes; there simply will never be a hayday like there was in the 70's and 80's. popularity wise.

now as far as pushing the limits of our collective ability, what's called "freeskiing" won't be as wildly popular until cork 7's are attainable by the masses.

keep working on them.

would you agree that its half skiing half basejumping? i dont see how you cant look at it as skiing. its like saying pierre's hucks arent credible because he hipchecks instead of stomping and riding away.

he relies on skiing though. seth hip checks too, but we still say he sticks treble backflip 12290 degree spins off 4000 foot cliffs dont we. if you start using other equipment, you are no longer skiing. its probably the closest thing to skiing, without actually skiing. (snowblading doesnt count coz it eats cock)

I can see you're point but I've only seen a couple no grab tricks that look better than a trick with a grab. Mostly cork 3s. Those look sick without a grab

it will grow to a certian point cuz reallly the tricks keep getting bigger and its goin to have to stop sometime cuz i dont think people are to beable to do a 17000

actually there's a vid on this site somwhere (i dunno where) of sombody doing an 1800. It's retartedly insane

What we need is something like the "smart" snowboards. WE meed a ski that can adjust from hardpack (park) to powder (backcountry) so competitions and peoples riding wont totally be influenced by our skis. A competition with half park and half backcountry

like the k2-back-9-mini-golf-bonanza? Yes Yes, I think that comp will open alot of eyes as to what the future has in store for us, or at least I goddamn hope so

if you woulda seen what were doing today way back in the state of mind days, you wouldnt have believed it. DADABADADADA WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, DADADADADADADABOOOOOOOM WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

seriously though...POO

why does everyone want to be so goddamn poular, one of the reasons this sport is so damn cool is cuz we are the few and the proud, but not the marines.

things always take care of themselves. it's not always about doing a bigger gap or spinning more, things will change before you (or anyone) realizes they have and you will be wondering what will happen next. then the same thing happens. it's cyclic yall so chill and do what you do

I have a problem with all you kids who are saying everything is going to keep getting bigger, Bigger Jumps, Longer Rails, Bigger gaps to and between rails, but if thats the case hitting shit like that is so inexact, theres a reason only Huckers like Candie< Mike Wilson and Laurnt Favre are doing stuff like that, it's stupid and ugly and extramly dangerous, I would rather see some one trick a rail and actually slide it than just hit their skis on it before they hit the snow, because thats what Candie's cork 810 to rail and Laurant's Fakie Cork 630 to rail are they're doing cork 9s and switch cork 7s and rails just happen to be in the way of their landings. Another example of Bigger is stupid and painful is Mike Wilson. yea everything he does is an example, Hey Mike two words SPEED CHECK, or in the case of that 185 ft gap go faster and you'll die slightly less. No if skiing gos in that direction it will turn into areals with rail in the way and making two piles of snow with a football field between them and doing the biggest straight air you can.

What I think is that skiing should go to the streets, both littarily and figuritivly (yay I can't spell) Full urban segments will become popular and not just urban rails, urban gaps. As much as I dislike rollerblading go find a blading movie with Alex Browskow (KFC3 is the shit you can download his seg on Limwire), that's were skiings going, another aspect is big mountain, your going to end up with more and more people who rip huge lines and throw sick tricks off natural features (pollard, Moss Patterson, Dana Flair). Terrain parks will be built more like skate park mad places to drop in a ton of easy to hit, super trickable features. Of course there are going to be some skiers to take the route of go big AND die trying, and I say good luck, that takes mad skill, have fun with you career because skiing like that it won't last long, unless your Jamie Pierre

Yea I wrote this, what are you gonna do about it??????

I think MR. Bishop specified intelligent conversation only didn't he? That means you're not allowed. Maybee go make another alias and take an hour trying to make somthing that isn't imature and gay

they've had those since like the 70's. My mom used them and shes like 45. u can ride switch and such. "It's like riding a pair of bananas"-my mom

I don't know why some of you are hating on inverted tricks. In my opinion i'm getting really sick of this focus on "style". What is style... who defines it? Is gorilla steez considered perfect textbook style? I don't see why it can't be whatever you want it to be. I might see two tricks and say the first is better than the second... you might say the opposite.

I'm a huge fan of mike wilson... he's the guy that goes out every day, puts his body on the line and throws down hard. In the bug air contests, when everyone else is thowing switch 10's, he's doing underflip to misty 5.

I'd really like to see some creativity, especially in contests.. and the only why that'll happen is if everyone starts having fun.

Personally, I am not too concerned with the progression of tricks. As long as everyone is out there having fun then the market will be there. There are many things that I would like to see happen in the industry though, specifically the Freeskiing segment.

- Improved magazines - In all honesty, I can't stand skiing magazines, the articles are boring, and there are the same 5 pros on every page. Most of the ads are shitty and do not target Freeskiing at all.

- More clothing brands - We have about 3 core brands that people wear. This is obviously not enough to cater to this market. I mean yes I would like to wear this clothing, but every other skier is going to be wearing the same thing. Skiers often buy snowboard and skateboard clothing because it IS nicer and more openly available.

- More videos - The reason that there is not enough coverage among up-and-comers and we get to see the same 6 pros in 4 different movies is because it's always the same. We always get 6-7 movies that come out in the fall. We need more team videos and movies that focus on a smaller group of riders that don't necessarily have to come out in the fall! Yes I realize that it works out that way because of the seasons and whatnot but imaginations are wonderful.

- More focus on all pros - Not just the ones that are cool for the year.

- More freeski specific ski, binding and boot brands - All of our money is going to the major corporations that are putting minimal effort and money into this market. These companies could care less if freeskiing continues, because they will just jump on the next growth market that comes there way.

- More shops that cater to freeskiing - How many shops in your town cater to snowboarders/skaters? How cater to freeskiers? This does not just mean that they have twins thrown in beside some rossignol touring ski. How many can say that they actually know what is going on in the freeskiing world.

This is just my litte rant off the top of my head, anything else that comes up may have more thought process
