Its that age old myth. I picked up a macbook pro today and am curious as to wether or not they can get virus's. If I watch porn will i get a virus? Should i get virus protection software. I know your all computer programmers here on NS so any info helps, shannnks guysss.

they can get viruses but its highly unlikely, because most viruses are designed for PC's because thats what like 95 percent of people use in the world.

Windows has a much larger user base then Mac and therefore it's not as lucrative to make viruses for Mac also because unlike Windows, Mac OS X applications don't share a common registry. Mac OS X applications use individual preference files, thus the types of global configuration changes which enable so much of Windows malware is simply not as feasible on a Mac. Further, root access is needed in order for malware to interact with other programs (i.e. steal passwords, intercept transmissions, etc.).

I'd say like most people that you would be fine without antivirus on your Mac.

i know thats somewhat true. but damn you would not believe that looking around a college campus.

Ive never owned a mac myself, but I vaguely remember a time machinesque program that comes stock with Macs.

It basically saves the current state of your computer, so if it ever gets gibbled by a virus, you can roll back the memory of the computer to a time when you didn't have a virus.

My family has had a mac in our living room for 6+ years. I dont even know what kind of stuff everyone looks at, but it hasnt had a virus once
