Can fish feel pain?

i think anything that has a central nervous system can feel some sort of reaction when they are exposed to pain. Their brain may not process the pain the same way ours does, but I'm pretty sure they feel something.
 
i dont think that hold true for all fish. if so, how to do salmon return to the same river/creek/stream to spawn as the same one where they were born?
 
a fisherman told me they dont feel pain when they get the hooks in their mouths but he told me when i was like 10 so he mightve just been lying to make me feel better about it
 
how come they squirm around then when you are taking the hook out of them. doesn't make much sense to me. i think your friend is BSing you.
 
i wouldnt forget it, but even if I did, that still doesnt mean that during those 5 seconds I didn't feel the pain. It's kinda like saying that if you shot me and I died 5 seconds later i didn't feel the pain because I died. Basically, whether or not I remember the experience doesn't determine whether or not the pain or experience actually happened.
 
I figure that anything living can feel pain. So in my opinion yes I do beleive a fish can feel pain.
 
true but whenever i put a fish on the ground it just lays there and gasps for air. and when I am taking the hook out it always squirms around.

maybe fishes don't have feeling in their mouths.
 
Im actualy pretty sure you're friend is right. Something about their brain being so small, they're missing the part that perceives pain stimuli.

... or something like that
 
Did you learn nothing in middle school biology? Sex is determined immediately when the sperm enters the ovum. Some sperm carry X chromosomes, and some carry Y. Every fetus already has a gender.

As far as fish feeling pain - HELL YES, they do. Anyone who works at an aquarium or with fish in some way could tell you that (myself included).

And yes, it does hurt them when they get hooked, especially if it's in the gills (damaged gill tissue means less respiration => less oxygen going into the blood stream). Has anyone ever had lung damage, like a punctured or collapsed lung or something? Same concept.
 
Wrong. This has been proven to be false by testing Pavlov's "conditioned reflex" theory on numerous species of fishes, including cartilaginous species. If you're not familiar with it, look it up.
 
Many bony fishes do, yes (although it's kind of a modified version of our definition of sleep). Most of the cartilaginous fishes do not, however.

if u fillet them when they r still alive cutting off their heads if fun since the head wiggles around for a while but then i kinda feel like a bastard but then i think that it's just a fish and can't feel pain- yes it is true since they don't feel it like we do. Their nervous system just tells them that their heads gone and pain isn't painful to fish if that makes any sense.
