Can a ski be too wide?

Sorry if this is already a thread but someone help me out. Been skiing forever but Ive never skied powder, Im from New York and just moved to Salt Lake City. Ive skied a NY powder day which means theres heavy ass snow barely covering your skis.

Bought an Alta pass this year and looking for some fatties. Is it possible to be too wide?

I want a ski that will easily float in pow but if it ever isnt deep, I dont wanna be screwed and hate my life cause I cant turn or have fun.

Whats the widest ski you guys would buy, or do you have any opinions about ski width when skiing stuff that isnt groomers and park.

Thanks guys

Yep lets get a ski thats a tru pow ski (118 underfoot) cuz its tight. Id find something around 95-108 underfoot.

Forgot to add, I have a pair of park skis, 92 underfoot I'll be riding when it's not a pow day but when it comes to true powder skis, what would you guys say the optimal width is

I like 112-118 waist skis. Floats great but not crazy wide like some of the 120+ skis

Get something you are comfortable skiing. I ski nothing narrower than a 110 underfoot as my everyday ski. It is just as quick and nimble to me as something 90-100. It's all up to the skier, when I lived out there you wouldn't see people on anything narrower than a 110 as their "all mountain" ski

So much moronic 'advice' in this thread, the above being the cherry on the cake of shit. Get the ski that:

1 suits your abilities

2 suits where you ski

3 build a quiver, theres no such thing as a one ski quiver

My quiver is progressive for different places I ski and different conditions. For Scotland and times in between storms I have either my Kastle MX88's and Volkl Explosiv's. For most condition's in the Alps I have Legend Pro 105's.

While the 105's can carve down a groomed run, navigate bumps and other non ideal condition's, the Kastles utterly destroy them in a back to back comparison, why? Well one is 88 under foot and has more side cut, weighs less and is more agile.

Also width is only a small part of it, rocker, sidecut, flex all play a massive part of it. I much prefer even my bottom feeding LP's to some of the noodly powder skis out there.

Did you not say the same thing as me?

Get the ski that suits your ability?

Get a ski you are comfortable skiing?

He is asking not asking how to build a quiver, he already gets that he needs to build a quiver. He has a ski that is 92 under door and has some side cut. He is looking for a powder ski. There are quite a few questions to be asked before anyone can truly suggest something for him to get.

What kind of turns do you take, will you be skiing trees, chutes, or bowls. Are you more of a free rider or freestyler. Will you be landing switch and taking off switch, will you be trekking/hiking, how much do you weigh, what's your ability, do you prefer a buttery flex or a stiffer bomber flex.

Then you can get into what type of rocker/camber/flatness that he might want, length and width.

I was telling him that it doesn't really matter what you ski as long as you can rip it.

You for instance might like to get down inside the bumps and I prefers to bomb over them making gs turns. If it's storming I prefer something noodley and playful with a decent side cut so I can stay in trees. If it's a bluebird pow day and it's open terrain I like a stiff bomber shallow side cut ski.

But all of my skis are fat skis. I have some skis with a 15m radius and some with a 26m.

From my experience, one you get above the 110 mark skis start to get a little clumsy on the hardpack. There are acceptions of course. I found the Volkl one and two to handle groomers and crud fairly well for being 116 and 124 underfoot. Best way to find out is to demo.

if it's too deep them fatties can't be to fat

your skis now were fat explosive pow skis back in the day

if ya got the loots git yourself a quiver rev/rev uberfatty slarver

and see if ullr bestows the goods worthy of such ski

All good advice, thanks for the help homies.

Most likely gonna get something in the 115-120 range, with middle of the road stiffness and early rise for sure but not fully rockered as Ive been told rockers can be a bitch when there isnt insane amounts of powder.

Cant wait to be shredding this year, I wish nothing but copious amounts of snow for you all.

Just get some "All Mt." skis in the 95 to 105 range and you will be fine.

No. 95 is pretty skinny for Alta. Op needs to be at least at the 105 range to ski Alta a lot/

This is actually a really good choice. I've had the YLES and they're bomb. Wiley Miller rides them at Alta. Ryan vitale rides them at Alta. Heck, half the 4frnt crew there in slc has YLES for Alta. Very good choice, and not bad on hardpack at all.

Still not fat enough imo;)

Op look for skis at the 100mm and up, but not bigger than 120. A lot of skiers up there are on things like 4frnt devy (104-108 wide depending on size), 4frnt YLE (119), ON3P Jeffries (114), ON3P Kartel 98/106, K2shreditor 102/112 and salomon rocker 100/108.

I have the YLES and Kartel 106 so let me know if you have any questions about them.

Honestly skiing at alta you want something a little more stable and nimble. You'll have more days of hardback and chop than pow. Probably better to go no more than 10ish underfoot but thats just me

out of curiosity, have you been to alta? Ive been there many times, live only a few hours away, and have many friends who ski down there.

I honestly think he'd be better off with something at least 105 in width. It does snow quite a bit, there's A TON of backcountry access up LCC, and usually bigger skis are more stable for bigger skiing.

I can't. I have a family that I can't leave. They need me Swandog. It's time you leave your selfishness behind and realize that I have a family to support now and we can't run around together. I'm truly sorry. You'll have a place in my heart deep down.

I don't have the time or the gas though..

I'm actually like 10 mins closer than olymouth, so that will save you lots of time. I bet you coukd do it. Took a 22 hour to Tennessee over the summer

@OP go with something on the wider side, you won't regret it. While something a little skinnier might be a little more nimble and maneuverable on chop days, you'll be glad to have something wide when there is fresh. You'll be fine with a 92 underfoot for the crust days as long as they aren't too trashed from park skiing and have some edges left. I'd recommend something around the 120 underfoot mark. Pow skis are really a lot of fun in any condition, at least to me, so don't be worried about going too wide.

Hopefully I see you up there this winter man!

I've got New Life's (151/121/151) and they are amazing. Other than being a bit long (194) for really tight stuff, I wouldn't change a thing about them.

I ride AK JJ's every day, and the only time i wished i had smaller skis is when boot packing, seriously riding a fat ski every day is just so damn fun

My punx?

NAHH Faction 4.0 is perfect for a bumps course!

(seriously though if its your only ski 104-10ish is a good width for everyday and pow)

I have Salomon Rocker2 108s and ski them almost every day in Colorado. Real fun. Just something else to consider.

4FRNT Turbos. 108 underfoot. Wide enough for Jackson Hole pow and you still get an amazing edge on groomers.

80's waist for park and/or moguls

90-100 for all mountain

108 for all-mountain, powder and versatility

115+ for powder

I have a similar setup...works quite well across my quiver.

Have 90mm park skis.

100mm all mtn skis

109 all mtn/pow skis

And currently looking at getting some automatic 117's or benchetlers for deep pow

Just bought some Jeffery 114's and I ski in the Midwest lol. Might try them out on groomers a couple times and our annual pow day, but I'll be heading west in a year.

Every time i get fatter skis I'm like are these going to be to fat? Then I ski them and I'm like NO...

I got surface lab's this year 161/131/161 and they are pretty sic when it is deep. If you are moving to utah where they measure snow in feet I would advise you to get some big ol swinging dick skis. I wouldn't take out super fats if it hasn't snowed but they sure are handy for a foot or two.
