This should be in media and arts but a canon 60D with a kit lens is around that price point, great camera for beginners

It depends on what you want.

Most people will recommend the Canon 600D (or Rebel T3i whatever it's called in the U.S.A.)

If you want a full feature DSLR that encompasses all that would be required to take you from rank novice to serious enthusiast without breaking a sweat get the 600D. You won't have to worry about changing camera body for a while and can explore the movie making as well quite easily.

If you require a more robust body and better camera handling. The top LCD is really a must and the better focusing will make a long shoot far smoother. Oh and: HIGHER BURST RATE!

If you go for the 600D you will have more budget for lenses.

Get the 600D with a kit zoom lens, lenses won't get cheaper and they are decent enough to begin with.

With the rest of the money invest in a 50mm prime.

And watch DigitalRevtv on youtube, it's like the Top Gear for cameras with an asian with a British accent.
