Camera Help?!?

i have a Sony Handycam, probably like a 2005-2006 model that still records to those little mini tapes and i cant figure out a way for it to be recognized by my Macbook to edit footage. I am using a usb cable and it wont show up.
anyone know of anything that can help me?
 
no you dont usb works, its just not as good.

yes the camera is on haand using the usb cable it doenst show up on my computer. and i dont really have a program its just iMovie. it really should show up though, everything else does.
 
Hes right, and are you 100% sure there isnt a firewire port.. itll look just like a usb and I think you should go check again. USB doesn't work with macs, and you never answered josh, is your camera in playback?

MY SOLUTION: I TOOK IT BACK YESTERDAY, TOLD THEM IT DIDN'T WORK WITH MY MAC. SO I BOUGHT A JVC EVERIO LAST NIGHT AND IT WORKS WONDERS!!!!
SONY CAMCORDERS THAT USE TAPES WILL ONLY TRANSFER PICTURES TO MACINTOSH COMPUTERS, USING A MEMORY STICK DUO.

but just a foot note, i got ragged on a couple days a go about putting a thread about a camera in nsg even though iput it here cause of more traffic, just for future reference.

Sony does work on Mac you just have to know what you are doing. I have been using a sony and a samsung camcorder on my mac recently and it's all joy.
Don't use imovie (unless you are using the JVC everio which need imovie to import videos) because iMovie is uber basic. Most people go for FCP but I prefer Adobe Prem Pro, it's easier to use. But that's just my opinion. You can D/L it using torrents.
 
this might be it. I movie is a bitch not only because it sucks but also, when you want to capture, the camera has to be plugged in before you open the program or else it dosnt show up
 
spoke to someone I know at sony, they say it will work on a mac, (sony would be f******** stupid not to let it work as mac are the biggest media computers organisation out there)
You just can't use gaymovie.
Use Premiere Pro. It's legit. Or Final Cut Pro. Not express - express is just an extension of imovie.

Oh wait no, your mac DOES have firewire as will your sony camcorder. Unless your mac is like 5 years old in which case you need a new one anyway. All sony camcorders have some kind of firewire port, you just have to get the right cable which isn't often supplied, especially in basic models. IMO people need to move on from tapes, they are not the way forward - especially for skiing. It's all about flash memory now.
 
oh i think i have the same camera and it too me awhile to figure outbut what i did is put it on the charger plate thing ( i dunno if your camera has it where you put it on a plate like thing the holds it up to charge it)and pluged the usb into the back of it then into the computerand the clicked i movie and eventually it came upsorry i know that kind of confusing
 
just going to keep it short, usb --> pics, firewire --> movie files, i have a handycam and a mac. if you read the manual you will notice the usb cable that comes with the cam is for pictures and the firewire you buy for separetly is for movie files, simple and easy, just check if you need a 4 pin or 6 pin firewire cable
 
Thanks for everyones help but usually when you plug ANYTHING into any port it always shows up on the desk top. but my camera just never shows up. i probably will use imovie just to play around and get comfortable editing although it is pretty gay and missing a lot of shit. so does anyone know how to at least have my computer recognize that there is a camera attached? ill probably look again to see if any replies work. but yeah

my macbook is just last year model with Leopard and has a firewire port but my camera is probably like a 2005 sony dcr-hc21 ntsc handycam.
it was 4 ports (not counting charging port)
usb(doest work), DV(not sure what it is), A/V Out(to hook up to the tv), and a LANC( i think is for headphones)
im stoked because i have all this good footage and the fact i cant edit it is really bumming me out...
 
As I said before, macs do not recognize video cameras through usb, to get your camera to work in imovie you have to you the firewire. This is where you use the DV out (may also say IEEE or 1394 or something along those lines) Make sure your camera is also in play back and that it is completely plugged in.. sometimes connections can come out.
 
Yeh use the DV out - and no, it won't show up. Don't use iMovie - it won't get you used to shit. It works in a totally different way to any higher class of editing prog so you will just start from square one when you move to FCP or PP anyway. So yeh, get a good editing program, import from the camera and then come back to us if you still have problems :-) x
 
chill man, Im sorry to be rude, but if you cant figure out how to import, it will be a real hard time for him trying to figure out fcp..

just use imovie for now, and once you find out that there are more features that you need, thats when you should start considering fcp or pp

I just don't think there is a lot of point in learning how to use iMovie - and not even sure that it will work (depends on the ver of iMovie) Adobe PP takes all formats that I have thrown at it. FCP does most but not all.
Maybe get the firewire cable sorted first, and once that is done, then look into the program you are using. You can always take your mac to a genius bar and they are usually super friendly, will help you out fo sheeee
 
well you can either start editing now, or wait two or three months while you figure out how to download those programs, and figure out how to use them..
 
So apple bump up prices a shit tonne for what you get, and remove features and benefits? Sometimes apple can be so fucking annoying. I really want to like them because well what's the alternative right? But yeah, they really want money.
