One of my friends is gunna teach me all the basics of taking good pictures, he is a pretty good photographer himself from what i can see. I really want to learn how to take some of the cool "artsy" type pictures. I was wondering what a decent camera is, but here is what I want.

Digital
Good picture quality
Not extremely expensive (I can work around 500)
One that I will not want to upgrade when I get better

Also, if anybody could give me advice on extra lenses, that would be great.

Thanks guys.

If you are looking to follow everything that you said you want to do then you might want to increase your spending amount to at least 1000 min. You can get a dig cam for about 500 but if you are looking to advance and do this in the long run invest in something better. I myself am a Nikon shooter and have had great results. I can recommend the D80, D60 you can get those under a 1000

You will definately need to increase your budget to get an slr and a decent lens. If you buy online from www.bhphotovideo.com you can get some pretty good deals. A good camera is a Canon 30D and a good lens for ski photography and artsy stuff would be a 24 - 105mm Canon lens. My friend got this package for around 700USD. The 30D has been superceded by the 40D but its still a great camera.

You might want to get a book or take a photography class of some sort too. Equipment doesn't do a whole lot to help if you don't get everything else in the picture right.

chillout man

typo 1700USD

but you can get a 30D body for $799.95 on bhphoto site.

ebay is good for lenses but buy canon and make sure they are the ones made in Japan.

i was never "unchilled'. Just stating a fact.

$1700 sure thing.

I actually found a 30d body for $575. Used 4 times. Then you could pick up a Tamron 28-75 and be set for a while.

yes, the big difference is the D40 is 6meg cam and the D40x is a 10meg. If you are looking to advance I would strongly recommend a better model, like I said before, the D80 or D60. With the D40 and x you are also limited on lenses. What exactly is your price range? If you say 500 then you need to change your standards of what you want

I have a olympus e-500, it was $800 brand new with two lenses, a memory card, case, ect... That was a year and a half ago. So they are way cheaper now, and they have better versions out that are fairily inexpensive. I love the thing, but then again I'm not a photographer. But seeing as how you are just getting into this its definately a good route to go, since you dont want to drop 2G's into a camera and then find out later that you dont really like taking pictures as much as you thought (what happened with me). The thing is the E-500 is really easy to learn and it will keep up with most of the big guys in image quality, assuming you arent blowing them up to huge poster prints... Anyway, thats just my $0.02, hope it helps.
