1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

About 450-looking to buy better ones used on ebay...

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?

I have used my friends which is a dlsr.

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)

Old Tripod, filters...

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

Looking to take shots of skiing and good pics

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

This is where my problem starts.

I want to shoot my friends but also have them shoot me...but i want good pics...So i was thinking of a dslr like a nikon d5000 or used T1i but then also looking at the hd hero 2. For skiing but want pics...

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

Hike record from tripod, a little follow cam-homemade diy

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

Regular macbook pro 13in 320 gb

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

Imovie hd and yes i actually know how to not make it look shitty...it actually is a good program

maybe a nikon d80 for photos, and then a go pro later or vice versa. You could go with the original go pro hd to save some money, there are prbly plenty of people trying to unload them, and to be honest while the new one is really cool, there is nothing "bad" about or "wrong" with the original hd (NOT THE 960). I hate to say it, but $450 just won't get you very far, its $300 for a go pro, and you would still need a photo camera. Also, your friend with a dslr, does he ski? maybe you could buy a decent camcorder and handoff to each other or something like that

yeah i hear what you're saying but he uses his for business purposes...he actually runs his own family photography...i would not want to be put in the hands of that expensive of equipment...although i will keep looking around any thoughts on a used nikon 3100? thats what I'm leaning to as of right now

Even if you can afford a d3100, it will not be the best choice for photo and video. I have heard its video mode is seriously lacking, and its photo mode is much more "soccer mom" than the d80 (though the d80 does lack video). I understand what you are saying about your friends camera, it makes sense. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no such thing as a perfect camera. The camera you want (the one with features you want), is out of your budget. One you can afford won't have every feature. You may find that there are cameras that claim to do both well, but at your budget, I really think you should pick either photo or video. A go pro hd is around $200. A nikon d80 is a little under $400 used. You would still need a lens, and as awesome as old lenses are, you will likely get very frustrated trying to shoot sports while learning photography in general with one

t2i refurb thru canon loyalty is for 475 and will be soooo worhit but then again you'll need money for lenses. This is the route i took... no complaints.

get a used 1dmkii- $450 on ebay (find a good deal)

then get a canon 50mm 1.8 mki (find one used)

Ill setup

j gasper wanna give some reason to your criticism? why would that be a bad setup.... my post said but you would need more money for lenses.......

i have plenty reasons. 1. this kid doesnt sound like he knows anything about cameras, a t2i isnt a walk in the park to learn. 2. you cant buy a refurb t2i with the kit lens and be set to go. 1200 for a t2i is minimum for a decent setup. so hes gonna blow his budget on the body, what about a good tripod? memory cards? lenses? batteries?mics? he should not even consider a dslr setup

op said he wants to shoot photos. he needs a dslr. doesn't need 1200 dollars, doesn't need a mic, and a tripod isn't that important right away if he's only taking pictures of skiing considering he already has one. he has to know that he can't get a dslr with video capabilities for his price range, but he can get a good camera. if he wants to shoot video and pictures on the same camera with $450, too bad.

it kinda sounds like hes in the middle. if he wants to strictly take pictures, then yeah a 1dmkii wont be a bad choice, but if he wants to take video and pictures, and actually make a quality edit, then a t2i would be a TERRIBLE choice.

ha ok guys ill clarify because i really do need some help on this. i do want to definitely make some quality edits but me and my friends are not really good at all so i definitely do not need something that expensive like a t2i. This is why i was thinking like the nikon 3100-5000 any other choices? and no i do not know that much about cameras this is why I'm asking for help.

evan fuck off your such a douchebag to so many people probably cause you got made fun of in highschool so just cause you know alot about something now your a bitch to everyone

yeah i mean lenses are the most important part, saying you have enough money to buy the body is not even 50% of what he needs. as people say, the body is just only as good as the glass in front of it.

i know but your criticism is invalid because i said that he would need money for lenses but whatever, picking fights is cool too!

You brought it on yourself, maybe if you were a little less defensive and arrogent about your own work i wouldn't be such a dick.

I have a D3100, I don't really know what to say, but if you have any questions feel free to hit me up.

FB is easier so if you have one, ill message you my name.

Has nothing to do with what makes me happy. You're bitching and moaning because we're giving you shit, but you deserved to receive the criticism because you were being so arrogent about your own work. You made a posted claiming you were so good, then wouldn't post anything then you did and it wasn't that good. You got defensive and you were being too defensive and made yourself look like an idiot. If you want to deny that, its okay, but if you weren't a shit head in the first place i wouldn't be giving you any shit back. If you cant take it, then don't post your work.

These kind of arguments ruin M&A. Remember the 70-200 f4 thread?

But yea your budget is too low to get anything that will shoot photos and videos well. If you want to focus on pictures, get an older used DSLR with a 50/1.8 or something. If you want to focus on videos, get a cheap video camera.

whatever and your always the instigator evan. i never said i was sooo amazing or great i said i was ok anf good and that i could manage a dslr but it was obviously just joking around the way i said it but i can see you cant take any jokes.... damn you REALLLLYYYY must have a rough life trolling around forums picking fights with 16 yr olds. cooll mann coooooooooool.

No, you weren't joking. Im over this.

OP buy an old hv30/hv40 or similar handicam that uses sd cards. /thread.

and thats irrelevant about my own work? but i mean if you wanna go on me in every single forum i post on in M A thats cool too. You are one of the people that makes people quit skiing, its not that hard just to be nice. try it before you post something else about how i made a joke post about my camera ability in any thread. just stop and leave me alone, i was never mean to you before you were mean to me. god damn your what? like 25? i fucking feel like im arguing with someone alot less older than that.

1) your an idiot if you quit skiing because eheath doesn't like you, with a legitimate cause too.

2)please leave m&a, i'm not hating, but for your sake and ours.

3)you were the one unwilling to take anybodies criticisms, eheath is a more mature person than you.
