Camera for my mom?

my mom has been into photography for a while. she was way into it in high school and college. pretty good if i do say so myself. both journalistic and semi-artsy photos. she's been out of the scene for about 10-15 years. now she's been getting back into it, and wants to get a good camera, to use a lot.she wants high shutter speed, to take sports shots.last a whilewilling to pay up to $8-900
she's been looking at:

D40-D60 arent worth it, not sure about the XSI, but I would go with a D70/D70s if she wants a cheaper camera. I got mine with with a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 with batttery grip and other accesories for $500..

Also you can have as fast of a shutter speed as you want on a dslr, Im assuming she meant she wasnts a faster fps?
 
if she hasn't been into photography for 10-15 years, i wouldn't recommend the d70/d70s. It's a little too high tech, especially if she missed the whole digital revolution.

d40 would be a good call.
 
if she spent her early years shooting legit journalism photography, i would expect she might stay away from auto?

I dunno, i have the d70s, and i know both my mom and dad (who are both artists and my dad is reasonably tech savvy) have no idea how to use it. It's just a little overkill for getting BACK into photography, and into digital photography for the first time EVER.
 
if she spend her early years shooting legit journalism photography, I would expect her to me at least familiar with the workings off a camera. I have the camera too, and it took me about a day to get used to it. But then again I may be a little more technical savy then adults..

Im going to stand by the fact the camera isn't that difficult. Its not overkill compared to what Pippin advised.. (not saying his was a bad suggestion, I would of said 30d, but I know little of canon)

the 40d was also a possibility, but it was a little out of her price range. i'll look around at some used ones.
don't know much about the d70, but after taking a quick look, it seems to be very comparable to the d40.
she's pretty good with technology, and she's the kind of person who would read the manual cover to cover if she didn't know what to do. but it still can't be super hard to work, the easier to use the better.
with that being said, what do would you say, should she go with the d70 or d40?
