Camera Advice Please

Well my birthday is coming up so I'm looking in to getting a digital camera, not just specifically for skiing. I'm a senior in high school. I'm not looking to make a living from photography, more for fun. I'm in a photography class right now but I'm not that knowledgeable beyond the basics. Price range is probably less than 500, maybe a little more.

I've kinda researched on the Internet, but I know there's tons of good photographers on NS, so anyone have any advice?

For 500 you could probably get a used Canon 10d with a 50mm 1.8 lens. That would be a good start. A Canon Rebel XT would also work well.

Nikon D50 matched with 50mm 1.8 Nikkor AF

look around and try out the cameras at local stores. While looking for places to buy first visit resellerratings.com. Also check skateperception.com for used cameras in the classifeid section.

The reason I recommend the Nikon is mostly because of the build quality. Whenever I feel a rebel, it feels very small and not structurally sound. It seems very cheaply built. The nikon is bigger and feels good in my hands. Also if you plan on gettin into flashes some day, the nikon's flash sync is a redicoulous 1/500 which can freeze action in any case.

im getting a D40 in a few days, good size, not too big, not to small, lots of options, quality, do it.
