im bout to buy a camcorder and dont know much bout them. which is better for filming skiing and stuff hi8 or mini-dv? and like whats a good one on best buys website for less than 500? thanks to anyone who will help

hi8 is not digital and you can not edit it as easy

mini dv is digital

i would check ebay that would be your best bet

mini dv is smaller. jvc minidv camneras are shitty and petty things break that cost a lot to fix so they end up under your desk in a drawer. at least mine.

depends what your final result is...if you and your friends are just going to rewind and watch your footy on the camera, doesn't matter what you get, just anything cheap that works. but...if you are planning on doing any kind of editing or output to tape at all, stay away from Hi8. it's old technology and is difficult to to non-linear (computer) editing with. you need to buy a bridge or adapter card of some sort to convert to digital (Dazzle DV Bridge or ATI card, etc.) Mini DV is definately the way to go, especially on a budget of 500 bucks. stay away from best buy though, appears to be good service, but is only because it is a popular 'department' store. if you're buying online, go with B&H Photo and Video (www.bhphotovideo.com). excellent company based out of New York. perfect reputation among professionals and consumers as well. (haha, i sound like a commercial) for 500 you can pick a nice MiniDV and maybe a few accessories if you're lucky.

I picked up a digital 8. Its uses high 8 tapes but is digital. It cost like 500 but I got sucked into the warrenty and extra battery and shit. So watch out cause the price goes up so quick.

-i got a Samsung camcorder for christmas and it takes Hi8, it's pretty good i havent used it outside yet though.. it comes with most of the stuff you need and it has a switch on it for if you are using it inside or out. I got it at Wal-Mart though, not Best Buy and it only cost just a little over 300. I like it .. it's fairly small-
