Camcorder from 1000-3000$ ?

I have the HMC40, haven't really filmed much with it yet, but I really like filming in avchd.

The picture quality is really good and it has a good variety of framerates and manual controls.
 
Your price range varies $2000...........that's a big jump from $1000-$3000.

How much experience do you have behind a camera?

What exactly will you be using it for?

What's your final output?

Do you have a beast computer?

It was also foggy and couldy. The hmc40 is a perfect camera to toss on auto and film your friends, imo.
 
7D -$170017-40mm $700steady cam w/ plates - $400 (this is a guess, you could do more or less probably)mic - < $300
just over $3000.
 
That's like buying the very first HD camera that came out when HD cameras were first produced. I'm gonna wait at least 5 more years before i even think about buying a dslr HD camera.

And to the guy about the hmc40, yeah, my budddy has the dvc30 (same thing basically just SD and tapes) and its the perfect camera to tweak scene files, throw everything on auto (exposure, focus, etc) and follow your friends through the park and get a decent video from it.
 
meh, look at the rate tech, is moving now vs. then.

the first ones came out a year ago (5D mk II, D90, D5000, whatever the canon rebel was).

the 7D is doing just fine.

Will there be a way better version a year from now? Of course there will be. But then there will be an even better version 2 years from now. You can't keep up.

I would take the 7D against many of the cameras that are being tossed up in this thread.
 
It's all personally preference, id prefer not to deal with detachable lenses right now and sacrifice DOF shots. Now, you may want that shallow DOF but right now with what im doing, not too worried about it. If i had a dslr id be running a pretty high aperture anyways so that i wouldnt have to worry about focusing (as much) so whats the point ya know? Its all about what you want, nothing to do with which is "better".
 
So true. Both have their place. A Video DSLR like the 7D is very appropriate for setting up on a tripod, focusing your shot and leaving it. Nice shallow DOF shots and artsy stuff. 24p and what not. And low light obviously

Not the type of cam you want to be doing follow shots with though or any really fast motion or other tricky shots. Too much of a problem with rolliing shutter and jello for action sports.
 
Nick, I thought your edit was pretty good, although the quality of the footage did not seem as clear as the little footage that i have recently filmed on my hmc40... It may very well be because of all the fog.

Just curious, what frame rates and shutter speeds were you filming at?
 
For sure! Besides doing new and challenging shooting techniques is played, in fact so is the whole "good production value" thing. So fuck it, aim and push the red button and call it a day. "Its a style choice" not to be confused with laziness or lack of talent

toss on auto and film your friends&follow cam until you find yourself on your side on the deck&thuuuuuuuuuuggg music&refusing to take the time to be creative&telling everyone else their videos suck&

Why the fuck are you shooting interlaced onto solid state!?!? Shoot 1080p30 if you want 1080 and 720p30p or 60p for the love of god.

As for people hating on kids throwing cameras on auto and filming their friends, maybe they don't care? maybe they just wanna shot the day and have fun and watch themselves later? You don't have to be creative and artsy with shit all the time, if ever if you even want to. Also, im not sure if youre trying to hate on me, but once again why does it matter? If the kid wants to be able to hand off the camera and have everyone get filmed, then there is nothing wrong with the hmc40 on all auto, its just like everyone did with gl2s and vx2000s back when they were 2000 bucks.
 
Im kind of a noob on the camera scene and wasn't sure what to film in. Thats why i had in 1080/60i. But thanks for the advice.
 
Yeah, please, interlaced is for tapes, shoot 1080p30p or 720p30 or 60 or try 24 if you wannna get filmy.
 
Kinda a bold statement, I can tell you that there is not a single person on newschoolers that knows how to use their camera to its full potential. Myself included. That doesnt mean they shouldn't be able to use a decent camera. Thats like telling someone who skis that they cant learn on good skis because they wont use them to their full potential...
 
yea both iMovie and Final Cut Express don't support 24p yet

If I were you I'd shoot in 720p30, imo 1080p30 is not necessary if your shooting primarily for the web...

definitely not me ;)
 
Truth. I will probably sell XHA1 at some point to upgrade, but I'm sure I'll hang on to my HV20 for a long time.
