Calories burned skiing powder all day.

A lot probably. I hiked a west face yesterday with my friend and I swear I probably lost a couple pounds. I need to get on a work out plan or some shit.

I was curious about this earlier this year while in Colorado, its so much harder to breath in the high altitude and it wears you out....

but according to a livestrong.com article:

Downhill Skiing

Downhill skiing burns 365 calories per hour if you weigh in at 160 pounds. That number increases to 455 calories per hour if you weigh 200 pounds. Downhill skiing is a power sport consisting of short, strong efforts followed by periods of rest repeated throughout the day.

btw i know powder is different so im sure it's a little more, but if you ski for 4 hrs that is easily over 1000 calories.

yea skiing ends up burning a lot of calories... if u ski a ton and want to diet. bring healthy lunches and dinners (for night ski)

in 2 weeks and 5 days on the hill (probably about 56 hours) i lost 12 pounds. i ate lots of fruit and like ham and turkey sandwiches

you just dont realize it.... i mean you brun calories when u walk but u dont sit there and sweat or get a workout from it

The average person burns an average of 80 calories an hour, or around 2000 a day. When skiing (specially in higher altitudes) your heart pumps faster and therefore does more work and exerting more energy. Any physical movement that does this will ramp up calories burned. So simple carving down the hill and getting back on the lift you are burning more calories that simply standing there.

Even more calories burned when skiing in the park hitting jumps and jibbing features since many muscles are at work and you are creating a force.

Skiing powder is prolly the best workout since you are working the body the most, almost like doing wall sits and squats.

Either way you are exercising and burning a ton of calories an hour...like the other article said over 350 per hour, a lot compared to the average 80 an hour

Its hard to tell when your actually skiing because most sports where your burning calories your persperating and we relate sweating with burning fat & cals. But skiing its cold so our bodies does not need to sweat

ladder climbing with pow skis up a 40 degree slope breaking trail in 3 feet of snow was the most challenging workout of my life. took like 10 minutes for every 10 yards.

To be honest when your skiing truly uncut powder with the new fat powder skis its fairly easy even when charging and IMO can be compared to groomers. On the other hand when it gets all cut up and I am bouncing around and my muscles are flexing so you don't eat shit on a ice bump under the pow I get so tired.

i have the same theory, in deep fresh pow you don't really need to work to control your speed more slarving than anything. in cruddy cut tracked out pow its a lot of work to stay at a reasonable speed and drive through the crud all while you're taking a pounding from the bumps.

Well skiing with my PEs sure wore the shit out of me today. I was out at eight first day at big sky skiing some knee deep, damn are those things hard to turn. Gonna demo the Kung Fujas or Obsethed tomorrow depends on how mush pow we get tonight.

tip, don't demo the fujas. they're hardly better than the PE's. the obsetheds on the other hand are a killer ski in any amount of snow, even if theres no fresh. but if you're going to demo pow skis go all out and actually try some pow skis, ie. hellbents, newlifes, ep's, or something big. if you're not going to be riding park the extra width doesnt matter, hell, its fun as shit to rip a groomer on my newlifes and they're 122 under foot.

swim. it has put me in better shape than anything i've ever done, and i played sports competitively from age 7-18, sometimes 2 per season. if you can swim 500 yards in 10 minutes without stopping, that's pretty damn good.

Running in the mountains is intense as hell too. I'm from WI so I normally run at almost sea level but I went to copper and ran around there holy shit so difficult I see why the kenyans are so dam good. I'm guessing if ur hiking nonstop and really trying and shit its prob around 500 or more calories per hour if ur just taking the lift and easy runs i bet its not much more than just walking because its really easy so it really varys on ur own skiing. Powder would def burn a good amount though i think 350 is pretty accurate.

i used to have PE's and they are heavy as fuck to push around in anything deep. now i've got 09-10 obsetheds...my roommate has 10-11 fujas...honestly, you can't go wrong with either the fujas or the obsetheds. they're both dope fucking skis. playful as hell. wide enough to float through anything deep. plow through crud. they're both super fun to ride in almost any condition. gargle gargle k2.

i really underestimated how strenuous and tiring skiing powder is until i went out west to try. I literally had to stop and catch my breath and let my legs cool every 15 seconds. especially in trees. i dont even want to begin about hiking.... the altitude really gets to you.

i had to do this at targhee(10k feet) skiing with my old man this year, he fell in a tree well about 30 yards up the hill from me. Im 6'4" and as soon as i took my skis off i sunk up to my armpits. I had use my skis as a pullup bar and try and climb back up the 45+ degree slope. All the while thinking my pops was suffocating...took like ten minutes, and by the time i finally got there(he was never in any danger) i had to just lay there and recover for 10 minutes. I was sweating balls in the -8 degree F air, and steaming profusely.

i dont know how those pros are able to break trail and hike those minigolf lines all day with all that powder...give me sled laps please.

I did some hiking today and holy shit does rocker make a difference. It's an instant confidence boost. I felt like that 10 foot cliff was no big deal anymore. I did two hikes, both were about a half mile long about 100 yards uphill then just across the peak. Sounds easy until you are 11,000 feet in the air with ski boots hiking on a boot pack. Its not a path its just a place to put one foot, then the next. Pretty intense.
There was untracked powder most of the morning but in the afternoon it turned to powdery moguls that were fun to cruise in.
I noticed that its really easy to ski rocked skis in untouched because you can get a poppy powder turn going easy and just surf, but with my Public enemys it was almost impossible to do that, I had to bounce so much on those skis.
I demoed 189 Obsethed and was blown away at how much easier it was to ski them, how I wasn't working to control my speed and stay on top of the snow, which kept me out until the liftie was like kid its 3:30 we are supposed to close this one at 3.
