Calling all South Lake Peeps

Im trying to get back out west this winter and want to follow the nino. Im looking at south lake/stateline area and ski heavenly and kirkwood. I spent the last 5 seasons at Jackson Hole and want to get away from the crowds.

That said, anyone looking for a roommate or know of anyone that are? Or know of any hotels that do monthly rates?

Thanks

Chris

If you want to stay away from the crowds then stay away from Heavenly. If you're set on south lake then Kirkwood would be best for off-piste terrain and Sierra can be pretty fun too. Heavenly has a legit park once they get it dialed in but the crowds are gnarly during weekends and/or holidays.

You might consider North Lake as well considering, Squaw, Alpine, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, and Boreal are located there, and even Mt. Rose if you'll be closer to the stateline, as well as Diamond Peak but meh.

Nightlife is better in South Lake, skiing selection is better on the North side, IMO. Good luck, considering the season has already started.

Crowds are nothing compared to JH. I can deal with gapers and families, I want side country and all those trees more to myself than what JH has blown up to the past 4 years. Plus I really dont want to live/work in Cali, my few guns arent too well received in CA.

You think finding work will be too hard? I have a good list of hotel management and shop management experience so Im hoping I could get into a shop/casino/hotel rather easily. Plus the 480 buck pass for Heavenly/Kirkwood/the 3rd hill is pretty enticing.

Well put it this way, Heavenly is a world renowned resort that's also part of the Vail group and just a few hours away is Silicon Valley. It get's pretty damn crowded on an average year and the side country is piss poor. Kirkwood isn't exactly right down the street from south Lake Tahoe either and that's where the better terrain and side country is and less crowds. Nobody will bother you about your guns as long as you aren't a douche about them and showing them off and what not, but if you're worried about it and have to be in Nevada and want to ride Heavenly, or even Rose, then yeah South Lake Tahoe, Reno, Carson City, or even Incline Village. A lot of seasonal hiring has already been done but your experience might help. Start making calls.

Every hotel storefront and workplace has a "hiring" sign out front in Tahoe... Jobs are plentiful as hell.

...But Southlake is meh. North-Tahoe it up if you can.

I have a buddy already down in South Lake, so that may be influencing my decisions a little bit...that said, through my looking it seems that SLT is cheaper than the north. Im looking for room shares more so than renting my own place. If I lived in north lake I would for sure be at squaw as my home resort, and that has to be busier than heavenly and for sure is busier than KW right? Hopefully finding a mtn job isnt too hard. I was planning on buying the local tahoe pass but they dont sell it anymore unfortunately.

Anyone know if working at a casino has any sort of employee pass/discount pass options?

I think you should just pack up and go and ask these questions when you get there, that's what I did, and it worked out well for me, and I had a blast. Are you a ski bum or not?

Well fuck, I like to think so. Being almost 30 tho means I need to make sure I can get a job that has insurance and pays well enough to pay my loans.

All of the tourists and families that ski Heavenly is what I like about it. The reputation as a gaper mountain keeps real skiers away and preserves all the stashes. It has a lot of awkward areas that are hard to get too. Most people think that sucks but it keeps people out of those areas.

I disagree about the side county. When there is good snow to the bottom Heavenly has the best side county in Tahoe. We just haven't been able to take advantage of it for a few years. When there is only snow up high its shit. Obviously Kirkwood has better terrain overall but it just gets skied out so much quicker. There are plenty of spots at Heavenly that are still fresh 3 or 4 days after a storm with just a bit of hiking.

Great beta right here. These pretty much were my thoughts exactly.

My room option fell through as the landlord is taking use of the house back. Anyone know of a room/couch?

I'd beg to differ when comparing Heavenly sidecountry to the North and even West Shore....let alone just Alpine Meadows by itself.
