California Shredders de la Gnar

To make this simple. I am a student at CU Boulder. My parents moved to California from Colorado last year, my freshman year in college. My dad was in the military so I had in-state residency But now the school caught on to their change of address and said I can start paying 40,000+ a year as an out of state student.
So right now my options are. Drop out and work at the resorts until my hearts content then try to find work for a high school graduate when i'm in my mid 30's or transfer to a school in california where I receive in state tuition and get a college degree.
I don't want an argument on what I should do. That was just background explaining where I am at.
This is where I need some information from the kids In california on NS.
What are some colleges/universities close to mountains in california?
I am not looking for community colleges. only like 4 year programs.
I know of sierra nevada college but that's private and about 42,000 a year. Which, unfortunately, is a no go.
I have applied to ucsb, ucla, berkley, ucsc, and cal poly. just as options for schools. I believe ucsc and berkley are about three to three and a half hours from tahoe.
I heard that fresno state is near sierra summit (not 100% thats the name but i just heard that its near a mountain) is it worth applying there?
so do any of you guys know of any colleges near tahoe or mammoth. or at least within an hour or hour and a half drive of the mountains?
Closer to mammoth would be prime as fuck, but anything is good anything at all.
Colorado has mountain colleges, does california have a mountain college system?
Any insight to help my situation will be really appreciated. Gracias Hombres

i know this isn't what you're looking for, but have you considered getting your own place in CO, establishing residency their yourself, and finishing out your education where you are? i know a lot of kids that did something like this when i was in college.

any rate....g'luck dude. shitty situation to find yourself in at that age, but at least it's California and not Iowa, I guess.

Yeah well I am already a resident of colorado so we could switch it so i would be the one who is paying tuition therefore getting in state but then my parents who are california residents couldn't claim me as a dependent on their taxes and I wouldn't be able to get health/dental insurance through them. And yeah It is a shitty situation but then again it's hard to complain. I mean no matter what I am going to be at a great school and I'm going to be happy it could be wayyyy worse. but I just want to be close to the mountains and no matter what when i graduate in two years (wherever i graduate from) I'm moving back to Summit county and working resorts in the winters and in the summers going to NZ or south america to do their winters and be able to be in the mountains for a very large majority of the year. So worse comes to worse. I spend two years at a college in california surfing in skating and getting a few days on the mountain during breaks. While I just for the real shredding to begin when I am reunited with the fluffy white stuff in two very short years. And work resorts until i don't want to anymore or when my knees give out then I'll have a college degree that I can use to start a career somewhere and settle down.

I had a great time at UC Davis-it's a fun college town and a good school, and it's only 1 1/2-2 hours away. Plus we have the ski or snowboard club and the alpine ski team, both who get up to the mountain a lot, plus they have good deals on passes and tickets if you need them. I still live in Davis for vet school and I still get up to the mountain all the time. A little easier to get into (I don't know you or what your grades are or what your interests are...UCD is definitely science oriented from my experience there) is Sac State, but it's still a good school (and better for business I've heard) and has a ski/snowboard club.

I think that UNR has a sort of good neighbor policy with California residents, and it's only like 45min away from Tahoe. Not positive though on that.

To second Caliskigirl, UC Davis would definitely be your best bet. I do day trips from the bay area to northstar, and Davis is pretty much my hour and 30 mark. That sucks that you can go to CU anymore, I'm going there now for my first year and love it. I know you wouldn't have insurance paid by your parents, but I'd really try to get a house/apartment out there and pay in state.

You will be happy at any of the following schools in regards to your skiing experience.

UCSB, UCLA, USC, CPP/CP, UCSD, SDSU, CSULB

I have also recently heard CSUF and CSUN

They all belong to the SCCSC or have access to other schools teams... This means they have around 10 weekends of competitions in Mammoth with huge trips done pretty cheap. The competitions include halfpipe, slopestyle, skiercross, slalom, and GS. No one gets too serious and burritos have been in hand during competitions and so forth.

But on top of that, with So Cal, it's 1 - 2 hours to Mt. High and Big Bear which is kinda like going to a playground. I used to go in the mornings before my 1pm classes. It would be like going to Echo from Boulder for a few fun laps only the parks at both are pretty amazing.

Season pass to Mt. High, $300. Student season pass to Mammoth/June $300. Season pass to Mt. Baldy $50 (sometimes they do this). You will think you will make it to tahoe enough to buy an Epic pass, but you will likely not unless you plan some trips to CO.

That being said, instate tuition at one of the UC's is around 10k a year. To CPP, CP or a CSU it's around 4k a year. USC.... 30k a year.

Out of the list I gave (less USC), the easiest access to the mountains is by UCLA, CPP, CSULB, CSUF and CSUN. Cal Poly and UCSB are about 6 hours to Mammoth, but they still shred hard. UCSD and SDSU are 3 hours to mt high, 6.5 to Mammoth.

Yes, it's 4.5 - 5 hours from LA to Mammoth, but this is no exaggeration when I say I have friends who live in town and go to school in LA. I did it myself. All T/TH classes and would skip T or Th every other week.

Thank you everyone i'm getting a super good perspective on things definitely happy to where I have applied so far. Hopefully it all works out ! But seriously this was amazing advice I really really appreciate it!
