California police arrest man, and then kill his dog

They should have asked the guy if the dog may get aggressive before they arrested him. Pretty much any dog with brains would do that and get upset if it looks like their owner is being attacked. And why pull out a pistol first? A taser would drop that dog with minimal harm in a second,

It was the owners fault the dog died, however the cops should have handled it better. The cop that shot it is a cruel asshole for letting it suffer.

Quoted for Magnus. I understand people love their animals but to murder that cop because he shot a dog, which at the time was a potential threat to him makes no sense whatsoever. Its crazy (and pretty fucked) how worked up people get if a dog dies compared to nobody giving two fucks if a comparative situation happens and a human dies.

In the video at the end of page 3, the owner admitted that the dog lunged at the officer.

/all arguments.

To the people saying the officer 'did what he had to do' or 'what was he supposed to do?'

Police officers are supposed to be trained, and be able to diffuse situations without escalating them. In some cases that means using lethal force. In this case i would say that i did not, there were 3 officers and one dog that hadn't even made an extremely aggressive attack yet.

These days cops are just trained to shoot a gun/ tazer. To me it looks like the cop is scared and overreacts, a clear sign of lack of training.

Anybody with a gun can shoot and kill an aggressive dog, but most would avoid it at all costs. So because he's a cop its his job to shoot the dog? No, his training should give him the ability to diffuse the situation without killing the dog.

also the police weren't wrong in shooting it, i would have done the same thing it jump at the officer. why are all of you pussies crying when watching the video. it wasn't bad at all a dog got shot than died its not like they beat it to death.

with great power comes great responsibility.

Yes the dog was trying to protect his owner, dogs do that. It is unfortunate that he was shot instead of tazed, but it happened and it wont change anything. but saying the officer did what he had to do, that is absurd and that justification is a joke. To me the whole situation was perpetuated by the police officers in the first place.. the guy was walking his dog(oblivious to the situation) filming the scene and the police officers. He was not interfering with whatever was in progress. The guy even put the dog in the car before being arrested and was passive to being handcuffed, there is no way he could explain what was happening to his dog, who senses his owner is in danger. I think it is very lucky that no bystanders were shot by the police officer by a stay bullet or ricochet seeing how many people were standing around and how wildly they were aiming. Everything would have been a normal day in the hood if the officers didnt feel the need to assert their authority over a random guy filming what was happening, even the way they approached him was in an aggressive manner. Its not illegal at all to film them and i certainly do the same thing when i see a scene like that. I am not anti police at all, but there is a line that needs to be drawn somewhere. yes the situation escalated too quickly but it could have been easily avoided from the beginning.

The owner put himself in a bad situation but that is not the problem here. The cops should never have let the situation with the dog escalate like that. What kind of weak person feels the need to shoot a dog? Clearly someone trying to prove something to others or himself.

Someone doesnt understand how bad a dog can bite. Yet another stupid thread on NS fed by idiocy and illiterate trolls

of course the dog lunged at him there were 3 people around and holding on to his owner. believe it or not, the dog did not know what an "arrest" or an "officer" is, so he saw his owner being attacked. his natural reaction was to attack the officers in order to save his owner.

Oh for sure, they have so much power. The police department doesn't want to look bad so when someone fucks up they just have other officers say the dog was attacking them.

Its fucked In seattle a Police killed a homeless man that had a knife and all he was using it for was to carve wood. He wasn't approaching anyone and he wouldn't put the knife down because he was def and mentally ill and the officer shot him and people who witnessed it freaked out at the officer basically because he shot a guy that was just standing on the sidewalk and could have been handled a different way. The officer still works in the police department and they paid the family 1.5 million which is still bullshit. You can't replace a life with money. Police are corrupt and racist. Power leads to corruption. There is a reason why certain communities look for gangs for protection other than the police. The police are bullshit and don't do any good.

When you guys are ACTUALLY put in these situations where you life could be on the line, lemme know what you guys did....until then dont comment. It happened move on.

well i have been bitten by a dog on a couple of occasions, i just gave them a good kick, seems to get the point across

The guy was an idiot and so everybody else who thinks he got arrested for video taping. Why didn't any of those other people filming get arrested? He was loitering at a crime scene and pulled up blasting loud ass raps.

glad to hear it, however in all honesty i haven't really paid enough attention to your input on this site to really form any opinion of you myself

Well said! A good knee to the chest works too. I have a friend with a German rot that has known me since he was a puppy... He always jumps at me because he is so happy to see me. This dog reminded me of his dog. Very playful. The cop barely had a chance to get a bad bite and he shot the dog instead of kicking him; with innocent bystanders around.

If I was a cop, I wouldn't have arrested that dude, but given the stupid situation that played out, I would've shot that dog no question, not the dog's fault, just senseless...
