BYU Ski Populus

I'm thinking of going to BYU for grad school and all the people I see that go there are fucking squares. Are all BYU students mormon gourds or are there some chill people in that area?

Everyone that goes to BYU is mormon. If you're serious, check out U of Utah.

Are you going for some sort of MBA?

BYU somehow scores well on business school rankings, but I’m convinced it is all due to Mormon nepotism and how the rankings are calculated.

The rankings likely consider post graduation job placement and salary. It is well known that a lot of ‘networking’ takes place in the church. And that LDS led companies hire LDS employees whenever they can, which means BYU graduates may find positions above their training just because they are Mormon and thus inflate the above metrics. If you are a Mormon, by all means go. If you are not, I do not think you will benefit nearly as much as you would expect.

not an mba, law school. they’re ranked 23rd i think in that regard. maybe i’ll just half ass convert to LDS for the benefits, sorry jesus.

I got into U of U but I’ve also heard that everyone there is a Mormon soooooo

I’m a senior at uofu rn. I was definitely worried it would be like that going in but it ended up not being true.

there’s a lot of ex Mormons from utah here and generally non Mormons who want to smoke and drink. Also a ton of people from out of state who are here to ski (what I did) . Anyone who’s actually a Mormon ends up at byu which means that the u is pretty chill.

SLC has a surprisingly good bar scene and it’s also easy to find tree

Grad school why not Provo isn't far.

Undergrad the social experience is a little too important to sign their honor code or agree to any bullshit. You should probably try and convert or just put down that you are mormon and get it for free.

I'd want some mormon connections if I was living in this region. I wish I could make a sales visit to a company I quoted a few things to in the past at my previous job but I can't realistically sell to them now simply because we won't ship anything to higher altitudes it fucks up the product.

It doesn't really make sense that people in grad school aren't all about partying though. Like you are an adult doing school for a job not joining the real world you should be drinking more than you did undergrad. You also clearly have parents dumb enough to pay for more than 4 years of that shit.

I grew up about 20 minutes north of provo and it wasn't too bad, granted there are a ton of people who are "squares" and they are the weirdest people youll ever meet but honestly there are a lot of people in provo who are like super normal, depends on where ya look i guess

But to get out of the "mormon" ish culture, just head more west towards the lake down by UVU and most the time it gets less religious and theyve thrown some huge parties down there

Just apply to University of Montana Law

Thats one of my safe schools. I'm banking on getting damn near a full ride there from merit scholarships, just looking for the best I can do for skiing while in school.

Go to Law School in Washington DC so you can work for the government and get like 10 weeks of vacation a year and do absolutely nothing. You don't have to live there after whatever internships you get should be good enough.

id start ski racing before i become a government attorney

When I briefly lived in salt lake, my roommate was from Provo. I met some of his high school friends and even went to a BYU game. If you’re not from that world, I can’t imagine the culture shock

lemme guess, $10/beer if they even sell them. which, they probably dont.

Do you like coffee?

This was like a decade ago but I literally remember my roommate telling me coffee was rebellious and the slc coffee scene was growing. I was like “This has to be a joke ”. It wasn’t just one reason but I left utah pretty fast. I was not down with that state at all. Granted, it seems to have changed a lot.

Apparently byu still prohibits coffee

I honestly can not impress upon you how mormon BYU will be. It will be like being on the Mormon planet Kolob. Like truly. Like legit culture shock unless you are a Mormon now.

They don’t even sell beer at Utes games. Luckily, it’s easy to sneak a few in when wearing a ski jacket, and it’s even easier to sneak a flask of whiskey. Luckily the pre game parties at the u go pretty hard

HAHAHAHAHA THE COFFEE SCENE

yeahhhhh from your testimonies ill probably apply to u of utah instead. BYU definitely wont be too keen on my drug charge either, given a coffee prohibition.

there’s a lot of tools but if you meet the right people then you can get into the chill groups pretty easy.

the school is good and the campus is great, me n my buddies swear like sailors all over on campus and no one gives a fuck as long as it’s not like addressing a prof. or something

idk it’s strange but it’s really not as bad as everyone is saying as long as you meet some chill dudes

bro the mormons will fuck u up big time if u even step foot on byu campus they will literally tie u up and make u chant crazy things and make u get baptized, i even heard that they cant drink coke and they totally fuckin act different around u because they can smell that u aren't mormon and will try to convert u so they can take 10% of ur money

Pretty sure one person jumps on the bed to make you stroke so it doesnt count

Soaking= sticking it in without any movement, therefore "nothing" happened

Docking= very similar to soaking, more of like a quick sec but no movement

Taco slide= uhhh no explaining necessary

The Provo push= your homeboy sits underneath your bed and pushes up on it so it is no the person moving...its the bed

Yeah these weirdoes will go as far as they can without breaking their precious honor code

But if anyone ever needs a job in provo, i got a sick hookup at a country club there and you can get free booze most weekends

Dawg I actually go to byu and it’s not as wack as people think but i find myself always riding with homies from the u of u cuz everyone who skis is a causal skier. On the bright side they got insane street spots everywhere with no skate stoppers and security don’t care. There’s actually a small party scene but it’s way on the down low cuz u can get in trouble with the school for smoking or drinking

You can swear there?!?!? No way, that is so rebellious.

Remember when victims of rape went to the Provo police to report a crime and instead the police told BYU about it and BYU expelled the victims of rape for staying out late or drinking alcohol?

I do.

It has changed a lot. They drink Monster Energy! But the non caffeinated ones of course. Don't wanna get that devils nectar in them. Onset heart disease and palpiations before you turn 30 is a much better way to live!

I'm mormon and have attended BYU for the last 4 years. Can confirm that the social scene here is pretty weird, even for members of the church. Haven't tried that hard to find the chill people tho, mostly hang out with friends I didn't meet here. Now that I think about it, I have very few friends I've met through byu that are more than just school acquaintances.

I work with a guy who grew up a devout Mormon in Alabama. He moved to Provo to attend BYU. His freshman year, it was so weird that he left the LDS church entirely and transferred to U of U. He said it was a culture shock of kool-aid drinkers. He compared it to the evangelicals he grew up with back in Alabama

Same here, but not so confident on full ride haha. Whats your LSAT/GPA? I've been working as a paralegal for 3 years and my LORs are all from lawyers at my firm so I'm hoping that improves my apps a bit as well.

whatever u think of the religion, mormons are much better people than any of us by almost any standard unless your definition of a good person is being a hedonist.

Yeah, they're definitely the best at white collar crimes and swapping wives at private gyms.

You don’t live in Utah, you haven’t seen the extent of corruption in the church/state nor have you seen the cultish way the organization treats its members

3.8high 16high. you have me beat on experience and LORs. any advice for seeking out internships/paralegal opportunities in undergrad? the real ding in my app is a C&F issue, which i mentioned in this thread earlier. also how’s your LSAT studying going?

The ignorance of this take is astounding. All the most bigoted, racist, and generally vitriolic events I have witnessed in person were all carried out by Mormons. The kicker was not only did they say or commit these things, they generally didn’t see any issue with them or think they were bad either.

Are all Mormons bad? Absolutely not. Are they better than any other group? Also definitely not.

what you consider bigoted and racist is not actually bigoted or racist.

I’m 100% sure using long standing racial slurs back by hate and anger is the definition of being racist.

I realize you’re a troll and think you’re being clever or subversive, but I truly hope one day you learn empathy and critical thinking.

I’ll be ‘praying’ for you

Nice. My GPA in college sucked so that's my big issue (3.2). Got a 164 on LSATs and just gonna let that ride. TBH you could probably take it or leave it in terms of doing paralegal work. If you already know that law is what you want to do, then I wouldn't worry about it. I studied econ in college and had no idea what I wanted to do after graduating and kinda fell into this before realizing how interested I was in law.

Homie pretends like he knows Mormons but he doesn't know about the initiatory. LOL I guess that's expected of someone who thinks you can inhale cement. Fuck off.
