RCR Press Release

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies focuses on terrain park safety with an industry-leading initiative.

Calgary, AB – November 8, 2007 - Resorts of the Canadian Rockies

Inc. (RCR) is recognized as an industry leader in providing world-class

guest experiences at its mountain resorts throughout Canada. In doing

so, RCR believes that safety in its mountain environments is one of its

most important values. Supporting this mandate, RCR is moving in a new

direction that will enhance safety at all of its resorts.

RCR cares deeply about the well-being of all of its guests and

takes responsibility for their care very seriously. “We are undertaking

an industry-leading initiative,” says Matt Mosteller, Senior Director

of Business Development for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. “All

man-made snow jumps will be eliminated from RCR terrain parks this

season.”

“We have found that one of the main issues that increase the

likelihood of serious injury on our mountains is big air,” says

Mosteller. “When we are making decisions about safety at our resorts,

the big jumps in the terrain parks always come into the equation. We

decided to make a change.”

Continues Mosteller, “We are committed to providing our guests with

a safe experience at our mountains. We realize that this change may

disappoint some guests who regularly use these man-made jump features.

However, we believe we have a strong moral obligation to not compromise

the safety of our guests.”

At the same time, RCR will be making an increased investment in new

rails and features for RCR’s terrain parks. For example, this year’s

RCR TELUS Park at Lake Louise Mountain Resort features the highest-ever

investment in new, state-of-the-art rail features that will cater to a

wide variety of ages and abilities. RCR will have rail parks this

season at Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort and

Nakiska.

With the new rail park format, RCR will host a Rail Jam Series that

will take place at Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort

and Nakiska. Features used in the Rail Jam Series will be suitable for

a high level of competition, while also adhering to safe practices.

For the past three seasons, RCR has also worked hard on developing

its family-friendly terrain parks. These unique parks, separate from

the larger parks, feature small rails, boxes and rollers, encouraging

learning, safety and fun in a non-intimidating environment. The

feedback on these parks has been positive and they will continue to

develop at all of the resorts.

you can't get that hurt on jumps, what brusied shins......rail are much more dangerous with the jr's in danger and all

Is there any sort of petition to fight this?

I have 4 mates heading out to fernie for the season (though i won't be)

isnt that the purpose of the warning signs when you enter a park and the liability you undertake when buying a ticket? if ur afraid of gettin hurt, dont hit the jumps.

well then they should probably get rid of all the trees because some one like sonny could hit one, better get rid of rocks they could hurt someone, better get rid of skiing all together some one could get hurt

well if they really wanted to provide a safe experience for their guests they should lock the safety bar on the chairlift so that nobody can jump off of it and kill themselves... but everyone has the common sense to not do that, and im pretty sure that the only person who wouldnt would be the same person who would go get paralyzed hitting a jump in the park

and while theyre at it they should put giant fences around the parking lot so nobody can get hit by cars either, thats such a serious hazard that nobody has even tried to deal with

skiing in itself is dangerous that why they have the liability on the ticket like that other guy said

Pretty sure rails are jsut as risky as jumps, Yeah i can kinda understand the huge jumps being a tad dangerous but the smaller kickers shud be kept. Besides the rest of the resort can be just as dangerous (even the lifts,,, A T-bar cable at my local mountain snapped and wipped around, cutting trees in half etc and it was bloddy lucky no1 was killed) Just saying how alot of stuff at a resort is a potencial risk.

Maybe when the conditions are too icy they should shut down all the slopes steeper than 25 degrees. I mean that would indanger guests wouldn't it?

Yeah i was down the bottom in the line, everyone on the lift slid backwards and fell over as the cable just whipped around demolishing everything. They are under alot of tension after all, and the cables for lifts are very heavy.. The resort kept it hush hush tho and the cable was replaced the next day, but it was fair scary.

yah i can see those metal wires being really heavy and tight...lol someone could have sued cuase thats not int he saafety contract you get wiht your ticket

skiing is fun and exciting because its dangerous

thats why we ski!

!if you take out the danger, all of a sudden its not so much fun any more

That's really stupid. Park passes and size limits would eliminate that just as easily as taking them all out.

At least they are investing in more rails as a compensation.

thats fucking ridiculous... "family friendly terrain parks" thats an oxymoron, families shouldn't be in the park, there are so many other options instead of eliminating jumps all together, why not do what tremblant does and require a park pass so you're educated on the dangers of being in the park and little joey doesnt go off a 50 foot kicker and break his leg.

brining in mroe rails isnt the solution, its not like people arent going to get injured just cause its a rail

this is how everything seems to get so much more boring. Ever since people found out that they could sue people if they a boo boo everything has to be idiot proof. Now instead of this awesome wood playground that was at my school they have this shitty plastic stuff. I hate it, not just the playground, but the whole idea behind it. It sucks.

there is a sticky for  apetition to stop this.

and anyone who thinks jumps aren't dangerous is out of their minds. Of course they are... it's a calculated risk though. they are fun. people just need to know how to use them.

didnt read whole thread but im 75% sure vail wont have any jumps over 15ft.

I work at echo and we have to measure every landing and takeoff, and if the landing isnt at least twice as long as the lip then the jump gets dozed...

oh and i almost forgot, breaking news:

NEW POLICY REGARDING LIPS/TAKEOFFS TO RAILS:

You must lie one stick off bamboo parelell to lip/takeoff and if you can fit a fist under the boo then it is not 'safe'. i.e. it has too mcuh lip.

So that means us skiers are kinda screwed because we cant ollie as well as our fellow boarders. so a lip to a picnic table for instance, either has to have a very long mellow in run, or a short, flat, no lip, take off....which is retarded because many skiers might not be able to ollie 3 feet onto a box....

hopefully this rule will only be in place for a short period, but til then, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitt.

PS-this is the rule for ECHO, not sure if its for other resorts as well...

this doesn't affect me, but what a bunch of fucking pussies. of course people get hurt, it's the nature of any extreme fucking sport. seriously, whoever came up with this rule, should be killed some cruel and inhumane way. yes, fuck you ________!

yea this is really stupid, i've seen it before but in all honesty rails are much more dangerous than jumps. and all jumps? c'mon, they can get rid of the rediculous stuff but not everything

if they aren't going to let a park crew build jumps with all the right tools, they sure as hell arent gonna let kids build their own

well I don't mean to sound like a downer...but my mountain hasn't had a park since forever and refuses to put one in. The "halfpipe" is a ditch that is shitty at the beginning, and not even recognizable by the end of the year. They refuse to put jump and rails in. Hopefully now that management is changing they'll change it but once a resort has made up their mind it'll be super hard to change it. But I think that NS is big enough to do this one at least, let's go for it!

This totally blows, goodbye RCR hello sunshine pass. How is the Fernie Freestyle Club going to call Fernie their home mountain now?
