Bye-Bye- Fish-Eye

Lots of people still use fisheyes... Seems like the Rokinon 8mm and similar ultrawide eyes of fish are becoming increasingly popular

I'm pretty happy there arent a bunch of kids with fisheyes just standing next to featuring doing the "point up, pull back, point down" bullshit skaterboarders have been doing for 15 years and snowboarders fucking love to do. Its the most uncreative form of filming.

It sure is my opinion

but you cant whip around a camera with a fisheye and seeing how close you can hold the camera to the end of the rail after the rider hits it and really thanks thats cool and creative?

it can be really cool for some edits in a grungy raw cheap sort of way.

that said, I'll be stoked if I only see 2 edits that use fisheye next year. It doesn't showcase the actual skiing at all.

You always say shit, tell me how filming with a gopro is creative then ?Stanley Kubrick used tons of fish eyes, and off course he is so uncreative.

.... filming with a GoPro is only as creative as the angle you use it for, which 99% of the time sucks.

And I never dogged fisheyes, I hated on bullshit skate filming that every fucking snowboard filmer does too where they point up towards the top of the feature, pull back as the person hits said feature then slams the camera in a downward facing angle with about 90% of the frame taken up by the end of the rail

My mistake for being aggressive but what you say here is very true. I always wondered if fish-eyes were create for beginners since it's absolutely impossible to miss the shot (i'm talking here of fish-eyes in sport, not cinema)

Lol every snowboard filmer.

You sure know a lot about it then. I rarely see it in snowboarding. But whatever.

And I think it's nice to mix in different shots.

You know someone is intelligent when they defend skate-style filming in skiing by stating that Stanley Kubrick uses fish eyes in his films...

Fish eye distorts the image a little too much. Don't get me wrong it can look cool but even the GoPro has gone away with it and they've focused on the wide angle lenses which I personally like.

my buddy and i were filming laps with a fisheye on his canon and it was a great time, its so much easier then hauling around a glidecam unless you are a dedicated filmer but fish eyes are pretty fun to use, no need to bash on it

We were more arguing about how creative it is... So yes I stated S Kubrick because he used fish eyes in his movies, especially in 2001 A Space Odyssey. If you learnt this from me than I am happy to have told you ;)

Every snowboard filmer at PC does it. Watch an irpc snowboard edit, its fucking awful

I'd rather go big on my 5D mkII

Seriously, is there any footage shot with that round ass fish eye ?

Honestly yes!

Thats the reason older ski movies are so sick. If they were filmed with todays hd cameras, oh lord how they would suck.

I understand the fisheye and certain "skating styles" of filming but again, im not hating on skateboarders, im hating on snowboarders copying skating. Snowboarders at pc just fucking fling around their hvx with $2200 fish eye and they fucking suck at it

16mm isn't necessarily dirty, it depends on your camera, 16mm can be very clean and look just as good as 1080p HD. 8mm is the most classic dirty/grainy film though. I want to make a 8mm edit so bad, just never have the resources.

I'm with you hear. That one angle gets so annoying. You can really tell if someone puts time and effort into an edit by the amount of angles and creativity they use. Just using one angle/style of filming just makes you look lazy.

And to the comment about go pro's, you can make good edits with go pros. Look at any of Will Wessons edits. He is the master of the go pro.

fish-eyes are really nice if you and your buds are just trying to make a little park edit. You can pass the camera back and forth and just log a ton of shots. Also not everyone needs filming experience to film with a fish-eye.

In all fairness, 98% of glidecam edits don't look much better than crappy skate filming.

Forget all that. Tripods for life.

i agree with this, but it's kinda cool to see some skate style follow cams with a fisheye. Kinda switches it up a little from the typical follow cams and standing next to features you see in most edits. It seems like most kids these days just stand next to the feature and get the shot without even thinking about angles or anything.

CASG wouldnt be the same if it was filmed with something other than a dirty ass fisheye..

And snowboard is kinda like skating on snow, so IMO fisheye in snowboardfilms and edits are legit as fuck.

I think this is quite funny with the gopros. at my uni trips you get tonnes of punters who get a gopro for their one week at the alps and then they film their 'cool turns' and then make a 10min film of them doing blue after blue then oh blow me down they've pushed the boat out with a black where they fall over and every single shot was in the helmet cam view.

theres a time and a place for fisheyes, and 90% of the edits that use them on this website and in other snow sports are neither the correct time, nor place.
