Alright I need some help...

A lot of you know a shit ton about notebook computers and I need to get something good for my money.
Going PC direction...never been a huge Mac fan so I'll keep it origional

$500-$750 preferrably but if you link me to something up to a grand I'm still going to consider it.

I need at least a Gb of RAM, at minimum...
100k+ Hard drive...

what you guy's think?
links/pms are appreciated and +karma just for helping.

What operating system are you going to use (XP, Vista). I've heard that Vista uses up a lot of RAM so you might want to consider more then 1 GB.

see...already needing help...and getting it too. thanks

personally Vista would be first choice but Xp pro wouldn't kill me.

I'm not using the computer for much more than personal use. (internet, papers, college work, etc.)

storing music
little editing

yaddayadda.
links would be sweet guys. just saying sony doesn't help me more than where i'm at right now. I've checked into a lot of shit but just don't know if im getting a good notebook for the money

17 inch screen is overkill.

If you are using it for the reason of being a notebook computer, get at the biggest a 15. 17 is just a pain in the ass to carry and takes up too much of your desk when you are also trying to have a book or two open in class.

If you think you need that big of a screen, get a screen and plug it in when you need it - at home.

Also, 2 gigs of ram is a lot of ram if youre keeping budget down and just planning on doing a little editing. If you are staying in a budget, you can always go for 1 and when you have money, buy the second gig.

Harddrive space is just dependent on what you do. I have 30 gigs taken up on mine cause I use two back up drives. There would be no need for me to have 200 gigs, I would never use them on my laptop... on the backups, sure, on my actual computer, no way.

Also, if you are a student, check with your school to see who you can get student discounts through. I know my school offers Dell, Mac, and HP discounts. I think the Dell one is nearly 25%.

Just don't buy more than you are going to need, cause you wont use it and in 3 years youll probably need a new one anyway.

Wow, I had issues with the 15 inch in class. Some of the desk tops were really small and when I was sitting there with a 1300 page book open on top of the computer, it didnt work out so hot. Had a few occasions where the computer nearly fell off.

I'm sorry, but if it is being used for school primarily, I think your 18 inch is serious overkill.

Ild rather have something I can pull out anywhere with a 20+ inch screen on my desk, oh wait, thats what I have.

Just realize that maybe not now, but a year from now, you will be carrying this notebook on your back along with 4+ books and you will need a backpack to accommodate. And the more obvious it is that there is a huge ass notebook in there, the more likely it is to get stolen.

Do not get Sony, Dell, HP, or some other bullshit company like that, so fucking overpriced, low quality, and loaded down with shitty software. Get a company like Acer or Lenovo. Acer is bomb shit, I highly recommend it.
