Buying a helmet

I need ideas for a new helmet to buy. I've never been interested in helmet types until know. What are some of your favorite helmets? I'm thinking either something bern or the smith holt. Opinions?

Between the helmets with basic technology there is little difference in terms of protection. The only thing you may want to look at is helmets with technology to combat concussions- though those may be more pricey- and weather you want a single-impact or multi-impact resistant helmet. Multi-impact helmets can rebound in to their natural shape after a small to medium sized hit to them, but they don't absorb a large impact as well (read: as safely) as single-impact helmets, which have to be replaced after a significant impact. The reality is that single-impact helmets are a) less expensive, b) better protection from large and potentially serious impacts, and c) almost never have to be replaced if you don't get in a serious crash.

I personally have experience with the Smith Holt and it is an all-around comfortable helmet with adequate ventilation. I have not had a large impact to my head while wearing it, but it looks good and fits nicely, and I would definitely recommend it as a good bang-for-buck lid.

tsg or poc look best in my opinion.

I have a RED helmet which looks good but seems a litte flimsy.

But if you are looking for THE steeziest helmet, look no further:

The only 'multi impact helmet' that is actually certified (that I'm aware of) is made by Giro (Combyn, and one other for '14/15). A bern hardhat isn't actually certified. All other helmets (Poc, Smith, Burton/Anon/RED, etc) are single impact and should be tossed after a hit. No matter how expensive the helmet, this rule applies.

Honestly, all certified helmets (yes even POC, well other than their MIPS line and maybe some racing technology) basically provide the same level of protection, the most important factor is comfort, if it fits well then go for it. Yes there are variations on weight and venting (in mold vs hardshell) but again, theres no real difference in safety.

it depends on the shape of your head and the shape of the helmet.. not what they look like on the outside kook

This exactly. Anyone suggesting a helmet is not helping They are just randomly tossing out names. You need to go try them on and see what works for your head.

This. All the typical helmets fit drastically different. Find a store that carries a bunch and try them on. Nothing sucks more than a helmet that doesn't fit well. Well, except boots that don't fit well.

Definitely try on helmets before you decide on one. The smith maze is my personal favorite, but I do know some people that it doesn't fit as well. POC helmets will provide you with some of the best protection, but they do cost more. Don't be afraid to spend some money on a good helmet though, it could save your life.
