Buying a Car, Help Me Pick One.

Over the summer I'm going to be working and with a bit of help from my parents hopefully, I'll be able to buy a car.

It needs to be:

we should weigh the differences

I would say something with a hatch back (for carrying around lots of shit) like a subaru. or something like it. whats your spending range? what were you thinking? i mean you said new car and thats it, so i say get a lambo

wow. it didn't post any of the criterea i listed. haha.

ok it needs to be:

sporty

rwd or awd

manual

relatively low maintanace

relatively low insurance

honestly it actually pointless asking NS about what car to get cause there all so SUBARU happy and all they will tell you to get is a SUBARU.

id honestly go a truck frord f150 250 or a dodge 1500 or 2500. cause when you need the 4 wheel drive you have it and can go in and out of it, also you have a box which there is more then enouph room for your skis your friends skis and your sled if you have one and like to go back country more often. you pritty much haver everything you need in a truck they just dont look sporty

but since your looking for sporty go the ford mustang GT or any of them you get more bang for your buck, one you have the legendary 5.0L the nicest sounding v8 on the market and performace parts are cheap depending how far you want to take it, also personally like the new style.

also if you can find it the Dodge Neon or Caliber srt4 depending if you get brand new, the milage is really good about 30 to 35 pg if it remains stock, also maintence is cheap about every 6000 miles they ask you to bring em in

price range? age?

this is just me hoping on the NS/Subaru band wagon, but id say an impreza outback sport 2.5rs. AWD, about 25mpg, comes in 5 speed. pretty quick.

if youre looking to drop a decent amount of cash, volvo s40/s60 T5's are dope cars too. quick, good gas mileage, 6 speed, turbo. also available in AWD

another thing. why do you prefer RWD over FWD? thats gunna be terrible in the snow, and seeing as youre on a skiing website, im gunna guess youre gunna be around snow a decent amount...

IF you do open up to FWD cars, a Volkswagen GTI 1.8T would be a good choice. quick, im not too sure about the maintenance, but i heard modded ones aren't amazingly reliable. and they get 30-35 MPG.

also forgot to add in the FWD section Saab 9.3 (SE?). good gas mileage, quick, fun to drive, turboed, reliable, and relatively low insurance.

mgbgt.jpg
low miles, brand new, $10,000 cash money priced to move!

ya seriously its fucking weird ive always thought they were lesbian cars like every dyke I know has one and noone else

I have a truck and I hate it. There's no room for my friends or my things since everything I need to haul is either camera or music gear, and I can't put that stuff in the back. So I'm basically paying for 10 mpg to haul around a big empty bed that I never use. blehh

check out some older saabs mines a 99 9-3 got it with 100000 for 4900 ran great but needed to put money into it cluch went and come other shit but when your not making monthly payments you could put money in to your car its a hatch so a ton of room for skis and stuff 5 speed putting out 185 so its not "that" slow and at its prime was gettin 31.5 mpg

for 6G's or less, check out:
VW GTI 1.8t (although the MKIV's aren't exactly the most inspiring cars unless you get a 337 or a 20th ae)....maybe even check out jettasVolvo 850 Turbo Older Subaru (I know...I said it) wrx or legacy or Mitsubishi lancer (JDM evo too!)Maintenance could be a bitch, but you can find some really nice E36 BMW's out there I'd stay away from Audi, great cars but they'll cost you an arm and a leg for upkeep.Older saabs...something along the lines of a 9-3 are great too.Personally, I wouldn't go domestic. Shit cars with shit handling (for that price range and appropriate age)I also wouldn't go with a truck or suv...unless you want to be sucking gas and have the driving pleasure equivalent of riding a hippopotamus...
There's TONS of stuff out there, especially now with everyone pissing their pants about the economy. Deals are to be had.

word ill actually contribute, i own a saab 9-3, its a fucking beast, hatch= sick for ski gear, it pulls pussy like you wouldnt believe. fast too for a 2.0t.
check em out

okay well since there is no price....

i'm kindof in the same boat as you. I'm selling my current 05 SRT-4 and i'm picking up a White 2.0T track hyundai genesis coupe.

its gonna be dope. reasons:

world motor block (the 4B11 currently used in the EVO X)

19" wheels stock

14" rotors with red Dual piston front and rear Brembo's

Limited slip differential

RWD

HID's

Bluetooth, ipod, and usb drive capability.

yadda yadda yadda. i could list a ton of other shit but i'm kindof wondering the same thing....why do you want RWD over FWD??? i mean i guess it depends where you live?

i live in PA and winters arent too bad, plus i need to get rid of wrong wheel drive... and i can drive my moms whip in the snow...

btw, 2.0 Base genesis starts at 22,000. and you'll be able to get it cheaper. but the track edition i stated starts at 26,750.

yeah vw 337 (they r the 2002 25th german ae edition) they r sick, 6 speed recaro seats, 1.8t bbs rc rims, the 03 20th ae edition is almost the same thing comes in various colors, im not sure how insurance is on them tho

insurance is the same as the regular gti...which isn't too much. i'm actually looking into BC insurance to see if i can register a mkiv r32 as a golf.... just further incentive haha.

When I bought a car I needed the same things.

First of all Subaru is out because you obviousy want a WRX and the insurance on them is totally outrageous.

In the end I got a GTI even though its FWD and I love that shit. And the insurance is dirt cheap for how fast it is.

But check out the new Cobalt Turbo SS and the new Evo Rali Art or whatever its called, the one they just put out to compete with the WRX's price range.

well, in your description you pretty much said "subaru." everybody and their grandma has one and thanks for supporting america. haha

get a 5 speed cherokee, people will think you are more manly

LEIK OMG no wai? Lets all hop on subaru's dick.

But really I guess a subaru fits your needs.
Get a jeep though, the girls will flock to you.

PLEASE.....stop reinforcing this annoying ns stereotype.
if you would have read the kids thread, you would have realized that the wrx is out of his 6000 price range (not counting insurance costs...which would frankly be astronomical). also, i understand that you must have been compelled to include the sti, because you aren't truly legit unless you mention that car. because a kid on ns asking "help me pick one (car)" is going to go out and buy an sti...with help from his parents... think for a second before you post this. not only has it been said 10 times before this, but it is quite inappropriate for his needs and means.
sorry, this isn't directed all at you. this is just a bit of my pent up annoyance spewing out. "git a soobaru there sick, sti ftw, subaru is the only car out there worthwhile of anyone's interest"
they aren't THAT awesome.

I like how you said NS was stupid for suggesting only Subaru's, then you said to get either a Ford F-250, a Ford Mustang GT, or a Dodge Neon. Are you on drugs right now? Can you read?

I have a 98 outback and I love it. It's still in the generation where I can work on it easy enough so the only cost for me is parts. I had the timing belt, full tune up and a few small things looked at when I first bought it in August 07. Cost $600. Went a year without a problem until I had my brakes checked and they found a spring was broken. Replaced that and a few things with the brakes. I replaced the o2 sensor, plugs, wires, filter, oil myself and I think the total cost is less than $1000 for the whole time I've had the car. My mom has had her 01 330xi for the same amount of time and has spent $8000.

Except Full Tilts are cool and STI nowadays is just like "WTF why wouldn't you buy a clearly superior Evo?" Just in the last few years, mind. They were pretty equal at first.

300zx tt

oh wait, thats what I want to buy.. not you

you should check it out still, one of my favorite cars

You could definitely find a 93-02 mustang for around 5k. They have relatively cheap replacement parts, they're sporty, and there are a ton of them around (so you could find one).

On the downside, they have no backseat.

Oh, and you probably aren't gonna find a sporty V8 that isn't complete shit (or needs a ton of work) for 5000 or under, so you should probably settle for a V6.

The car or the truck?
My friend has a Toyota Yaris which I drive sometimes and it is good on gas, low maintenance and probably low insurance because the engine is so small. It's a pretty fun car to drive although not very sporty. But I would look at that, because it's also a relatively cheap car to buy. Also maybe a Mazda 3 or Mazda 6? a small truck might not be a bad idea either.

just so you guys know, right now i am driving my parents' saab 9-5 2.3t. it its pretty fast and the understeer isnt as bad as alot of fwd's, but every thime i drive it i wish i were a manual and rear wheel drive. the horsepower is good enough at 180, but i would like a car with stiffer suspension alot, and would also appreciate a lighter car.

so far my candidates have been:

older subaru wrx (sti if i can find cheap) which is low maintainance, awd, decently powerful, four seats, and upgradable.

2bd gen mazda miata. low mainainance aswell, and super fun, and rwd. but pretty gay, and needs body mods for you not to feel like a fool driving it with turbo and a blow-off valve. also no storage really, but a good commuting car, good fuel economy.

1985-1990 porsche 944. fun, rwd, 4 seats. not quite as reliable, but important parts such as clutch, engine and axles are very durable. most replacement parts that tend to break are only about $30. also, its just an awesome classic car.

nissan 300zx twin turbo. pretty low maintainance, powerfun, upgradeable, but looks lame stock so would probably buy a tuned one someone was selling.
