mikeski, don;'t think I don't see your point. i see it, but I feel it's not what we should be doing. COnsumption is not the answer. It only satisfies todays culture of convienence. who knows when it will be, but one day (usually called a 'mid-life crisis' or 'retirement') these are times when people have time again, and want to be the person they were when they were 20, to have those same beliefs, and all of a sudden they strive to make a statement with the money they have...It usually changes their lives and they find fufillment, but it's too late to create change on a larger scale. This is something Im trying to do now.....I know I have a lot to learn, and others who know 'more' will try to squash me, but I still have insights, and I like to share..I like to share my insights..I love when people share theirs with me. So basically, I want to support my beliefs as much as I can...Even if they do change daily..

I went to walmart today (nov.23) Bought Papertowels,Soap and deoderant. I went out and bought chinese food from a franchise restraunt. Im going to go grocery shopping before the nights over aswell. I'm doing alot for my cause (Buy Everything day) which just so happened to fall on your buy nothing day. Mines better though.

i don't really get it..this year they're picking on mcdonalds it seems...they say that the cheeseburger has fat in it...most cheeseburgers do! the thing is that noone is making people buy stuff..they always make it seem like we're traped in a box and that they're poking us with needles...but they aren't

Buy Nothing Day is hands down the worst idea ever compiled. I am sure this has been said, but since I do not feel like reading every post I will reiterate the point. This will never be effective because someone, somewhere, always needs to purchase something that is a necessity on a daily basis. The biggest problem with Buy Nothing Day is that it will never hurt corporate America. The first person Buy Nothing Day would hurt (if it were effective, which it never will be) is the cashier working at Wal-Mart trying to support 3 kids. If Buy Nothing Day were to have an impact and actually cut into sales and 'harm' corporations, where do you think they would begin to cut costs at? Oh that's right, they would cut costs by laying people off. The lay offs would further damage an already damaged economy. And WHA-fuckin-LA, Buy Nothing Day has done nothing more than hurt the little guy. There is a reason why people who come up with events such as Buy Nothing Day are not running a Fortune 500 company or fiercely impacting the political scene. Hmm...I wonder why that is. (Scratches own chin and rolls eyes into head as though I am trying to read my brain)

Here's an idea: Go to school, study some economics, some cultural theories, some communication theories, some advertising, some Marx, some consumer theories, etc, etc, etc, and then come back to me and start talking about your ideas on the state of the world, consumerism, and evil corporations.

Another quick thing to a few of you: Adbusters isn't a source for any kind of legitimate argument, point, or anything at all, other than entertainment. Please stop quoting it and/or using it as a resource.

If only you understood how deeply entrenched the problems of consumer culture are, then you'd realize that buy nothing day, though a great day of protest, really doesn't affect anything.

There's 2 ways to change things: Become the head of one of the major corporations you seem to hate, and then change things from the inside, or start a consumer revolution, in which we do not STOP buying things, but rather completely change our consuming habits. That means things like: Buying small, cheap cars that don't pollute nearly as much as SUVs, and walking/riding/skating/whatever else instead of driving, not buying food that gets shipped over 1000 km to get to your plate(not sustainable), and supporting local community everyday to help out the situation, rather than participating in buy nothing day once a year. What it comes down to is your will to actually change things, rather than participating in an activity designed to make you feel better about yourself and your habits.

Think of how it effects the economy, money is meant to go in a cycle, buying, selling, and investing money.
