There are not of a lot of well educated people talking here. Although I don't agree in hardly anyways what c_lo is saying, he backs up what he is saying the best, and is probably the most educated.
Anyone who says Capitalism is supremely good, and does not exploit anyone is dead wrong. Capitalism has created many problems for the 3rd, pushing them further into poverty, and does nothing to help get it out. These problems arise from the way the IMF and other organizations are set up. They pretty much give money to the government hoping that they will do the right thing. And they won't. The governments in power in Africa and south east Asia are on the whole, corrupt dictorships or oligarchies. They pocket the money, don't create industry to spur the economy and pay back the loans, and the country plunges further down. The only way to change this is through education and active participation by other governments, or organizations such as the UN. The main reason this doesn't happen is because it doesn't serve the interests of nations like the US.
Socialist Democracies are definetely not the answer either. Look at British Columbia, we had the NDP government in for 9 or so years, and they have set back our economy for at least 10-15 years. Canada as well. We may not have big problems now, but if Canada doesn't change its gonna be in huge shit economically. There are reasons why the US has risen to prominence, and countries like Canada, France, Sweden, and even Britain have not. These countries socialist policies have not allowed them to progress as far as the US(I know a lot of the reason why the US is where it is, is because of its position during and after WWII, but look at Japan and Germany).
c_lo is completely right when he says Capitalism exploits minorities, and especially other countries. But until these countries become Capitalist themselves, this will continue. Obviously this will be hard to do, with American multi-national countries continuously trying to exploit them, but it is only a matter of time before this happens.
Capitalism doesn't work perfectly. But guess what, nothing does. Especially socialism or communism. Believe it or not, not everyone can be equal. It is in Human Nature that some people will be better off than others, you can't be completely equal, because someone will always find something to complain about. The socialist system breaks down because the poor slowly refuse to work and pick up welfare, draining the economy. Welfare is not wrong, but there are huge problems with it. It should be a way to get you restarted, not something that people depend on. I'm afraid that no matter how perfect the world might become, people will always be exploited. But, if the entire world was capitalist, everyone would be exploited equally. Give the whole minorities/women etc. thing time, it will work itself out. It might be a while, but change like that can't happen overnight.

Alright first of the UN is a piece of fucking garbage. The UN is an old boys club. There are few more corrupt organizations in the world. It is fucking impossible to get fired from the UN. Eg. Lukica- ran a prostitution ring out of the UN headquarters using african immagrants. Busted what did they do? Re post him in zambiya, buddy steals .5 million in food aid (during a famine) and gets busted again. Then he gets shifted once more before he retires on a full pension. I can't really see how this generalization of white people doing bad things can be applied to your opinion of white people so generally. Historically its been the people in power who make most of the decisions that effect the state. It just so happens that this is and was upperclass citizens, who are predominantly white. But damn, if you sit through a semester of college sociology, you're going to realize about 80% of these white kids are on the left and are seeking to understand and theorize on ideas to stop the problems of the innercity. What I'm trying to say is that a lot of white people feel the same way you do.
There's also this issue of the explicit use of the word ignorant on these posts. Why do you have to tell someone your ignorant, this always seems to happen in the first 3 sentences! I mean if you're THAT much more intelligent than someone with a premises and supporting arguments that are THAT much more valid than someone else's, your argument alone should prove their ignorance. Resorting namecalling does just the opposite.
Another thing that I see consistent in some of these posts is the call for you to read a book. Ok what kind of book are we talking here? If we are talking about sociological perspectives on the ghetto, or even books on the U.N., you can find a book that supports either side. Just because you read a book from one side and it's persuasive doesn't automatically make it correct. People hide a lot of the objectiveness of circumstances behind a lot of subjective rhetoric. Basically, you can always find what you're looking for to support your viewpoint and deny things that oppose it. In psychology, this is called the anchoring and adjustment heurstic. People don't need to read books by intelligent authors necessarily, they need to read shitload of history from sources as objective as possible.
Another issue I have with people that are on the left is that usually these are people who have never even lived close to the ghetto. I grew up in Cincinnati, 10 minutes from the ghetto, and I am still on the right. Over a year ago we had race riots in our city, I actually have black/mixed cousins who go to the city's public schools (that some view as even worse than Boston's public schools sytem), and we have 57 UNSOLVED homicides. I have a lot of problems on coinciding with the viewpoint that the white man and upperclass supply all of the burden to the innercity. For these people to want to help the innercity, the innercity does have to do something for themselves. Things should be give and take. Let me go back to the homicide issue. Part of the problem is that a lot of these homicides have several, even dozens of witnesses to who committed the crime. But noone comes forward or gives straight answers. How can you expect help when you don't even help the authorities get the dangerous people out? Granted, better witness protection may be in order, but things never get solved when the side who has the problem doesn't come forward first.

Just because you read a book from one side and it's persuasive doesn't automatically make it correct. People hide a lot of the objectiveness of circumstances behind a lot of subjective rhetoric. Basically, you can always find what you're looking for to support your viewpoint and deny things that oppose it. In psychology, this is called the anchoring and adjustment heurstic. People don't need to read books by intelligent authors necessarily, they need to read shitload of history from sources as objective as possible.
Another issue I have with people that are on the left is that usually these are people who have never even lived close to the ghetto. I grew up in Cincinnati, 10 minutes from the ghetto, and I am still on the right. Over a year ago we had race riots in our city, I actually have black/mixed cousins who go to the city's public schools (that some view as even worse than Boston's public schools sytem), and we have 57 UNSOLVED homicides. I have a lot of problems on coinciding with the viewpoint that the white man and upperclass supply all of the burden to the innercity. For these people to want to help the innercity, the innercity does have to do something for themselves. Things should be give and take. Let me go back to the homicide issue. Part of the problem is that a lot of these homicides have several, even dozens of witnesses to who committed the crime. But noone comes forward or gives straight answers. How can you expect help when you don't even help the authorities get the dangerous people out? Granted, better witness protection may be in order, but things never get solved when the side who has the problem doesn't come forward first.

c_lo isn't retarded. He may be a little socialist, but he's not stupid. The UN is a bunch of old men, and the world bank, and IMF don't help much either. However, institutions like this do need to be present, just in a totally different way. The UN and such have to be reorganized into more of a meeting forum, with less actual power as far as money and such go, and should have no military power. I agree that decentralization is very important in areas like asia and africa, because infrastructure and the like is difficult to develop in those areas.
