None of the threads ive searchbarred have matched my quest for a laptop so please dont say that...

I have no bias towards any brands or models (mac or pc), so if you suggest one maybe give a few reasons why?

I know nothing about RAM or whatever when it comes to computers so someone fill me in on a good amount of (____) to have in a laptop for my needs below, so it all runs fast and smooth

Basically the only things i need this laptop to do is:

-basic microsoft office programs like Word (only Word really)

-basic internet surfing

-capability for iTunes and max of like 10-15 gigs of music

-storing pictures (no photoshop, no video editing, nothing fancy)

And what about antivirus programs and operating systems? Any recomendations? thanks for any help thats useful!

Aight. For what your lookin for, you don't need a lot of RAM (laymans terms,Random Access Memory. this is the amount of memory your computer uses to function. The more you have, the faster shit loads.) Nowadays, the min. you would want would probibly be between 2GB - 3GB, or gigs. For hard drive space, I would say at least 250GB. I personally prefer Windows as opposed to Mac, but oppinions on that subject highly differ. As for anti virus, DONT GET IT FROM THE STORE!! You can get that easily online for free, and that will save you maybe $100.

Hope this helps

^over kill.

OP, Your usage requirements are so minimal buy the cheapest laptop you can find. Hell even a used laptop for $50 as long as it was made in the past 8 years would suffice.

more like techtard. you didn't take any of his requirements into account, like some little old lady needing a car for groceries and you sell her an f350.

Consider buying from a custom place like 201PC instead of a place like Best Buy or Dell. Seeing as you don't want much software, you can get it with basically nothing except windows installed, and then buy Microsoft Word and an Antivirus program seperatly. This way you don't end up paying extra for all the shit you don't need like Excell and whatnot. IMO its the cheapest way to do it, and the people will help you build a really shitty cheap computer if thats what you want.

whats 201PC? and ya honestly i dont want to spend much. I dont want a crappy computer, but i dont need an aluminum shell and 15 inch screen and all. Kinda in the middle if thats possible. Thanks for the help so far guys!

Anybody want to weigh in on macs? i know its an age old dispute but i dont know anything about them really...

Aight lets say 13 inch would be the biggest i need. I like portabilty and good battery life, and i assumed bigger screen=more money so ya 13 inch.

This whole thread is pretty pointless.

Go to a computer store, and buy the cheapest laptop they have (with whatever screen size you want).

Basic white plastic macbook would be all you need. Easy to use, plenty of battery life, and overkill for everything you'll be doing. Office is available and works well on a mac, and with the macbook you won't have to worry about viruses or spyware (at least not as much as on a pc). They're simple enough that you won't have to waste alot of time getting everything set up and working, and everything is really easy. You wouldn't have to worry about as much stuff as with a windows laptop.
That said, just about any basic laptop, windows or mac, will suit your needs. If you have the budget and are willing to spend it I think the macbook would be more suited to your needs.
Maybe look around, find something that looks good and post the specs on here?If you're going to do that then make sure you give us RAM, processor type and speed, and hard drive size.
Other than that, 2GB RAM would be good, and you'll probably want at least and 80 GB hard drive.

how is it immune to viruses? i just got one and im going to upload an anti virus program but if this is true (which it probably isnt) i wouldnt need to.

go to best buy and buy the cheapest one with the screen size you want. once you do that, install AVG antivirus free, google it for the download, and you're set

sounds like you need a macbook pro. they are fast, have a lot of ram and memory, and for only 3k, it's basically a steal.

Yea, and also if you should have problems with your new mac, Ive also heard that you can install windows on it so no problems therefor

Ok thank you to all who have chimed in, its pretty clear what i do, and dont need now. Serious question though so please no one call me an idiot, would an iPhone work for me? Wouldnt really have typing capabilities or much to work with photos, but for internet and music it seems like it would do the trick? And can iPod Touch's connect to the internet?

Just answered my own question, looks like iPod Touch's can connect to the web. Next question: is there any difference between the iPhone and the iPod Touch besides phone capability?

..good thing you read his post stating that he was a mac user himself..

and thank you nomen for holding it down for us mac users who aren't dickheads about it.

also, LOL GET A MAC CUZ NO VIRUSES AND YOU CAN BROWZE TEH INTERWEBZ FOR ONLY $1000 INSTEAD OF LIKE A COUPLE HUNDRED.
