Burton gets owned

My guess is both.

Great post Loach.

I was hoping to be done with this thread but shit it's hard to ignore, what's really disturbing is all the kids on this site who are cheering on some hypocrite gaper's attempt to stir up ski vs snowboard hate?

The real sad thing is that it's working, now we have kids from this site cruising over to snowboard forums just to post this stupid article and beak off at boarders? Sigh.....

that article brought nothing new to the table, other than proving burton's point. yes, burton went way over the top in describing fascist ski resorts and equating not being able to snowboard at alta with racism. anyone who has experienced true discrimination should be offended and pissed at burton. however, what was clearly a marketing gimmick has proven to be more, if solely for the fact that Hans Ludwig, after calling out burton, gave the most bullshit reason yet for why alta should be skier only. Whose the gaper now, Hans?

Will snowboarding be better off without burton, so all the ski companies that make snowboards can fill the void? No. Ski companies should either be sending Jake Burton thank you cards every christmas, or death threats. Burton did what every ski company failed at doing, reviving skiing. Burton and Sims changed the entire ski industry more than shaped skis did. Now, Burton is a global leader in outerwear, making products that rival and sometimes are better than arcteryx (owned by salomon), cloudveil, mtn hardwear, etc and use their huge R+D budget to make cool shit (burton came up with welded seams). burton is still a small (relatively) private company and, most importantly, snowboarding is the priority. ask k2, quiksilver (they own lib tech, rossi, DC), volcom, solomon, what their priorty is. if they say the integerity of snowboarding/skiing their shareholders might be just a little bit pissed.

while, i don't agree with burton's team managing style, or how they throw their weight around the industry and i think most of their products are overpriced, they are a much better ambassodor for snowsports than the random dude whose shareholders own k2. in fact, they are better ambassadors than powder mag or hans ludwig, the gaper that he is (according to his own definition).

i'm not sure if this post is supposed to be sarcastic or not but here is some real info: ronin, anon, red, gravis and analog are all burton brands, or spin-offs. they started these lines and companies. the only snow-related company they bought was fourstar canada cuz it was a steal. fourstar canada is forum, jeenyus, special blend and foursquare. someone else already posted their non-snow brands in this thread.

I am really curious as to see how Jake Burton responds to this. Unfortunately, I don't think he will be that effected by this article. The money to his name, the popularity, the mainstream of it all isn't phased by petty things such as this. However, this could lead to more sweepstakes/competions or whatever you would like to call it once again starting up the battle between skiing and snowboarding.

Fuckin' Gapers.

Jake Burton's daughter goes to my university, I've found her on facebook.

The best part?

She skis. That's right, Jake Burton's daughter skis.

honestly, they truly are.

i work at a sports store and we tried to get burton shit so that we had "the company" for snowboarding. everyone that works at the store and snowboards doesnt even like most of burtons stuff. they say the higher end stuff is decent, but not worth the $800-1000+. but we needed it regardless so that people would in return recognize us as a "legit" store.

so the first year, burton only sends you rental equip. they straight up "dont need" more stores to sell their stuff, so they send you rental gear for the first year. after that, you can order their actual equip for really fucking high prices and make about 30% when it sells. this year we didnt even get this years stuff until december. made numerous calls, emails, and just got ignored. but, stores need them because if a store doesnt carry burton, they are viewed by the ignorant and uninformed public as a "bad" store. a girl wanted to order a certain board and we had to tell her that we didnt even have our stuff in yet for this year (this was december). she came back a few weeks later and we did eventually order it, but still. it makes our legit store look terrible. we're contemplating not carrying burton, but we have to in order to stay alive in the snowboarding business.

and what an epic bump.

Met the person who was apart of that marketing campaign this fall at the ESWA annual meeting. Really nice lady. Thought she had some great ideas. Well spoken, intelligent, and very appreciative of others opinions.

I loved the letter written by Hans. Almost as much as I loved the ad campaign by Burton. At the end of the day, both did what they were meant to do which is get people talking about certain products. All press is good press.

i agree but i disgaree...
why should we bash burton for doing what they are doing? yes everything that was said was probally true but does that make us any better? no it makes us look like stuck up assholes.(as skiers)
just let burton crash and burn on their own. if we jump on the hate wagon we will inturn look just as foolish as they do.

Epic bump.

I wish stuff like this could get more recognition.

So more of the snowboard community would see it.

I bet alot of snowborders would agree.

Anon cut their ski teamsBurton decided to run a contest on poachingLib tech is making skisSalomon is making snowboards ...Core is deadCorporation owners forgot their passion
Everyone's in for the money
And yet, no one is talking about Dany Kass... weird!?

i ordered Powder mag through my sister's school thing since she had to sell them.

anyone know why i dont have it yet. or when i should get my first issue?

Actually posting a thread in snowboard.com well be a better more effictive in a comedic sense

are you sure about that? as far as i knew jake burton has a son, it wouldnt be that far of a stretch for someone with the last name burton to be living anywhere close to him without being actual family, or immedeate family. its very possible that i am wrong though.

that would be comical if it were true.. but jake 'burton' is actually jake carpenter.. burton is his middle name.. so unless you found a girl with the last name carpenter who skis and is decked out in shaun white's cheesy line of burton gear, you're probably mistaken my friend

I bet Jake wiped his ass with that article, he didn't own jake, I doubt he even gives a fuck about some little magazine that attempts to poke fun at an innovator in both sports. You can't hate on Burton all you want but that contest was funny as fuck, my buddies car got tagged with a poach sticker. Burton is still a great company that allows the companies it buys to still have complete creative freedom, it puts on sick comps and makes dope gear even if it is overpriced. While I do hate their bindings (Pieces of shit) Whoever wrote that should be kissing Jakes ass right now considering he would have no job unless jake was around. I don't like burton all that much either but at least I have some fucking respect for the founders of snowboarding and the people who continue to bring money into both

For anyone who bought a subscription to Powder and hasn't gotten it, e-mail powder@palmcoastd.com with your address, etc. They should be able to take care of you.
