So, I'm currently a sophmore in college. My dads paying for school right now, but I think of I took off to bum, he wouldnt pay in the future. However, everything in me wants to take off and ski. I have saved $11,000 and w/ a job i think i could do this pretty well...but part of me says to just get this degree out of the way and then ski for as long as i want. WHatcha guys think?

that exact same shit goes through my head everyday man, it sucks. making decisions sucks, espcially ones as important as that.

on the one hand you get your education, a degree, a chance at a good job and good money that would allow you to ski in the future

but on the other is your chance to kill it while your young and just rip all day every day.

if you really want to bum, i'd suggest taking 1 year off, get a part-time job, and go somewhere you want to be and just fucking ski. get it out so when you go back you can concentrate on your shit and finish up

it's good advice...if you really have to question going to school and getting a degree then going skiing a few times more a year then you should drop out

what about just taking a year off school b/w high school and college, or taking a year off college and going back. I mean that isnt bad. I would work at a resort or something, make some extra money and ski. I def. have the drive to go back to school after a year.

I don't deny there are bad things in the US right now, hell, 51% of the country to be exact. But god damnit, our country being fat is NOT a problem. I do't give a shit how fat people are. hell, fat kids are harder to kidnap, that means our country is safer.

the only thing keeping me in school is that my parents pay for it. The main thing you should be thinking about is free school now or ski now and pay for skiing later. I can get in 60 days while staying in school and my parents are paying so i am getting the degree. It is a tough debate but dont let society make you feel that you have to go to college, you only live once, you might as well enjoy it. So I say honestly consider being a bum you will enjoy it until you have to go back to school. Also you are never going to be this young again, you can go to college any time in your life but you reach a point where you cant really ski bum like your can at this age

I just dropped all my college classes, and I'm moving to CO to ski and work. Make sure you can get a job if your going out, but otherwise talk to your parents about taking a year off. That's what I did, and they know I'm not gona be happy going thru 3 more years of college knowing I'm blowing any chance of becoming a better skier. I'm planning on going back to college beginning either taking summer classes, or next fall. If you really want a degree, get it, but otherwise do what will make you happy. I guess I'm just rambling but really try to do what will make your life better.

like that kid said above the stats say you wont go back, but if your like me you might be thinking i would rather be struggling to get by while living part of a dream, than to just be some shmuck working in a cubical and skiing on weekends and taking the fucking little kids to ski school, but i understand that prolly i couldnt "live part of a dream" for that long and would prolyl just get hurt and be stuck uneducated.

ive got another version of the pole dangle, its pretty funny too, gets cold when i do it on the lift tho.

check into online classes man. that's what i'm doing since my parents won't pay for my school unless i continue to live in their basement.... I just go up whenever possible and i can get 50-60 days a season easily. I'm going for more this year though since i'm gonna start taking fridays off. just crank out the school work and get er done early and ski for about 5 years, it's all good.

ya. I'm not really relying on this thread..just wondering what everyones thoughts were and also about personal experiences...i get the feeling if i stick out school, bumming will be so much less risky, and i've always got an out...

Move somewhere you can ski and goto school. I used to take 2ns semesters off my fresh and soph years to work at resorts.

Then I moved to Utah and guess what, I am going to school and I still get more time on the hill then I did when I worked at a resort. I take 15-16hours first semester, 12- 2nd and get prolly 130+ days in. If you got a freeride and you don't need to work, don't.

We pay our debt sometimes.

there are a few schools out west you can do a semester abroad type thing, check that out i was thinking about doing that. you keep the same tuition but go to that college

i was thinking of doing the semester abroad thing at westminster in salt lake. that way i get my classes in, get to experience a new place, and get to ski a lot. i see no bad side to this plan.

 
dude if you go bumm this year, it doesn't waste your school before hand if you come back within 7 years its all still viable.

definatly stay. I did the same thing and now i'm going back to school and had to pay for it on my own which fucking sucks. it's really hard to go back once you leave. get it over with and then do what you want for a year or two. I regret my decision.

just really try and make your parents see how strongly you feel about this, you might be able to convince them to pay for college after if you promise them that you'll return to college after a year. its easy for everyone to say, "wait two or three years" but in reality its hard as fuck to do that.

my plans are to get a degree, then work/live at a ski resort until I save enough for an apartment, then find a real job and live the rest of my life
