Built out my garage to be a tune shop

We bought our house in 2018 and the garage was sick. Had its own electrical panel and drop outlets all over the place

When we were expecting our first child, I wanted a space and hobby to keep connected to skiing. After we remodeled our kitchen, I had some cabinets and a fridge, and the Little Wax Shoppe was born.

1078147.jpeg

Initially it was just a canvas drop cloth that divided the shop from where our car is, and I needed about 3 heaters to get the space tolerable.

1078148.jpeg

With the pandemic bringing extra long wait times for waxes and tune work, I got a decent following for work coming in and reinvested everything I made for two seasons.

1078149.jpeg

1078150.jpeg

I took the leap and framed out the space, Insulating along the way to minimize heat loss.

1078151.jpeg

painted, before carpeting went in.

1078152.jpeg

Carpeting in, ski rack wall with shingles getting dialed.

1078153.jpeg

work bench in and getting things dialed in. Needed to move it all over for better flow.

1078154.jpeg

got the shred flick wall dialed and mini-fridge (supported by fat tire)

1078155.jpeg

work bench dialed (Wend wax account now)

1078156.jpeg

Ski artifact wall getting still dialed in, you can now practice your putt while you wait

1078157.jpeg

seating area done.

Follow @thelittlewaxshoppe on instagram to keep following along.

Hope you enjoined the transition

That's really cool!

I'd like something like this for myself one day, was there a reason beyond preference that you went with carpeting over rubber mats?

It looks cool and it’s a side hustle - I’m not standing out there/making a big enough mess I can’t just shop vac up at the end of the night. I do have an additional astroturf carpet under the wax area so I can swap that out if it gets gross

Makes sense! Does look pretty cool for sure

You’ve got me motivated now. I have a good sized basement and a half assed workshop / tune shop going. Yours is sick. Props for all the work you put in!

I’ve got an extra TV sitting around and a dvd / vhs + a psx that I def need to add to the mix

Man this is so dope. Me and [tag=275932]@BLandz[/tag] are starting to do the same thing in my garage and getting all our local homies to come to us for mounting and tune ups. I wish my setup was as nice as yours but we’re working with what we got lol

@cspliffff that’s whats up, start with what you have, and grow it organically on your terms

Hell yeah, always awesome to see other home shops. I like how you’ve got the dvds of old movies. I’ve got a DVD player hooked up in our shop but I like how you’ve got the dvds on display.

Ours is in our house instead of having a spare bedroom. Been thinking about getting a kegerator for it.

Legendary dude with unmatched passion and a dope wax zone that lives up everything else about this guy.

That is one hell of a man cave/tune shop! PROPER build out! Have you considered adding a hotbox setup? Let that wax soak in reeeeaaall good. Most shops would never bother, could be a nice little competitive advantage over shop tunes.

Actually yeah! The hope is to add that over next summer right below the work bench- just need to be a little more creative with some storage. Also hoping to add a winterSteiger base grinder / stone machine. It’s expensive but the shop I used to work at is looking to upgrade so one is available

fuck, just realized my Candide got autocorrected to candies. how embarrassing

if this were to be expanded, i feel like a similar set up could be achieved in a trailer or van and could go to events all over

I actually have a little setup for taprooms that has astroturf base, a swix table and a little stand up peg board thing with tune supplies, and my mugs that I sell. I think these convey the look of my brand more than the remote trailer/van. There are some of those out there, and I have mad respect for that operation. I just think the home base is cooler vibes and solidifies the space.

Nice setup!!!

What storage rack did you use for your bench? Is it 8' long?

Hahaha I know how it sounds lol. But for real I built a relatively janky one back in the day and it actually was awesome. I worked up at Renstall in PC for a number of years (They get REAL fancy, tuning top end race skis) and I had this at the same time so Id always have race wax available. They had their own proper hotbag setup, but id hotbox in that graphite race wax to all my skis, holy crap they would glide forever! especially in spring conditions with dirty snow, it makes a massive difference, both the graphite wax and the hotboxing.

I essentially built a wooden box and lined it with aluminum foil. suspended a silicone heater blanket had with some little chains and added a door. that was it. very basic but it worked.

I once got to experience a day on race skis that were freshly baked in a hotbox.

From the building to the lift required either walking carrying your skis or skating a bunch. I just did a couple strides and I glided all the way to the lift. That first run was scary fast.
