Build your own Dolly / Jib Arm (instructional video inside)

So i've had more then a few conversations with people that have wanted to build a dolly and/or jib arm so i figured i would post a video so that anyone wondering how they might be able to do this would get some insight.

Dolly

Its actually a pretty simple process, and fairly cheap too. The dolly only cost me 36 dollars to build but i bought all brand new skateboard wheels off ebay. Thanks to the ns member that was so kind to ship me 70 bearings to put in them. (i won't reveal his name so he doesn't get a lot of pm's from kids who want free bearings.)

Jib Arm

This is a bit more difficult and a bit more costly, but if you're mechanical whatsoever you can probably do it.

download the video i made here, it doesn't go into huge detail, but like i said it's pretty easy.

i will ask the mods to please not move this thread to another forum because not as many people would see it probably...

That looks awesome. I really want to get into filming but I don't have the money for a camera. Filming skiers with that stuff looks really fun. You could get some great shots.

very very dope
goin to have to try that stuff out...but how easy is it to dissasemble and to transport the crane eh?

its very easy.. thats why i suggest using 2 pieces of box tubing, because unless you have a truck (which i dont) then you need to be able to break it down into pretty small pieces..

sick vid...but why did u make your dolly so huge, takes up a lot of space. And for those that want to go out and build one...stept and i just built a dolly and you can get by with 8 skateboard wheels which will save you a decent ammount of money when building it.

i made the dolly that big so the platform is big enough to fit the jib arm so i could get dolly/jib arm shots..

there's tons of ways to cut corners on cost.. you can find recycled steel or make the weights to balance your jib, pretty much anything you could think of really..

when i bought the tripod i paid 50 bucks for it

everything else probably cost around 50 bucks but i bought pretty much everything that you see that makes up the jib.. and you'd be suprised how much little fittings and bolts add up..

the jib arm cost around 100ish..

and the dolly cost around 35ish..
