Been out the pc world for awhile and am looking to find a solid desktop or laptop that can edit videos decently well? Currently using an a6500 and will be getting the mavic 3 next spring..not looking to spend more than 1000, ideally would like to be around 800 if possible. Will be using the Adobe suite.

Had a acer nitro 5 that’s on its way out, worked well when I first got it but it’s a shitter pc now

appreciate the help in the advance ppl.

get the base M1 air or mac mini

No, just no.

For $1000 I would look into getting a windows desktop, if you need a laptop though you could prob find a decent windows rig for $1000. Focus on getting an i7 if possible, at least 16gb of ram and a decent video card (not as important).

Might be just on the verge of your budget but there are good deals to be had on the Asus ROG zephyrus G14. It's a pretty gaming-focused laptop but got all the specs you'll need for editing and then some. I got one for a steal last year off of a guy on Craigslist who didn't know what he had and have been super happy with it. Just look for one that has the RTX2060 and Ryzen 9 CPU. It's probably overkill but it's the only laptop I've used recently that I could recommend, but at least something to consider.

Price to performance, you'll definitely want a desktop hands down. Look for Ryzen 5000 series desktops or find a friend to help you build one. They are the best price to performance CPU at the moment. As previously stated, get as much RAM as you can (16gb and up is fine). Video cards are nothing short of stupidly expensive right now, and I think the best valued card atm based on my research this summer is an AMD Rx580 4gb card. If you have to get the half slot version, do it. I have one and it's just fine for editing 1080p and some light 4k work. Don't cheap out on PSU and MOBO. A balanced build is a good build. If you live hear a Microcenter, you can go in and look for the open box shit that's on sale. It's cheaper than brand new while still being brand new basically. That's what I did for my build. I got a discounted case and MOBO that way.

yea as far as value goes definitely try and build something yourself. microcenters are great, sometimes they will have bundle deals if you buy certain things. I bought the parts for my current rig at a microcenter a couple years back a got some good deals. cpu and ram are important, would go for something with six cores and 12 threads, prob from Ryzen 5 line and 16gb or more of ram.

Sad to say the closest thing to me to purchase in person would be a Best Buy I think…and that’s still 1.5 hour round trip lmao. you can build a pc on Newegg and they’ll build it for you, right? May do that…so Ryzen 5000 series, 16Gb+ ram.. dece graphics card, anything else I should know?

honestly if your comfortable you could build it yourself and save the extra little bit that they would charge for their services. plenty of videos on youtube. check out Linus Tech Tips, he has a ton of great tutorials on how to build and setup a pc. ive built multiple and never had any issues.

What are y’all thoughts on this? (Just below $1500). Can I do better? Am I totally fucking this up? Is a pre built gaming pc a better option than what I have picked out? Should I get windows 11 over 10?

Sorry I’m a total noob.

should be pretty good for what your looking for. if you wanted to save the extra 150$ you could just run windows unactivated. ive done it for years no issues, or could buy a cheap key.

you can get a windows 10 key totally legit for lie $20 online so def dont pay that 150

So aside from the windows program I’ll be able to easily edit 1080/4k with ease?

edit: easily….with ease…I’m off the wazoo

Yeah you should be fine. Only thing I'd do is swap out that CPU cooler for a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. It's cheaper and sort of the go to gold standard.

Hi! I'll chime in on that parts list you posted as I noticed a couple of things that could change.

CPU: take a double look into the benchmarks of the Ryzen 5 series vs. the 3's. A 3700x has close to the same price and could bench quite a bit higher.

You're dead on with the Motherboard and RAM.

GPU: I know it gets tricky here, but see if you can find something with multiple fans. The 1650 should get you by, but I'd be wary of heat issues with that specific model since it looks like its built for mini ATX towers. The solo fan configurations are usually to save space for those types of builds.

Power supply: 850w is definitely overkill for this rig, and overkill does nothing other than run up your electric bill. You can probably save $50 or so by going to a lower wattage unit, or put that $140 budget into a more efficient or reliable psu with a lower wattage. My guess is you would need like a 650w, but the better way to approximate things is to build this rig up inhttps://pcpartpicker.com/ and see what the recommended power requirements are. Also that site is EXTREMELY useful for price comparing and cross shopping different retailers. It's your #1 resource for this tbh.

SSD: The Samsung evo series are great, if you want to save some easy cash you could go down to the 970evo and you won't notice a difference. You could also consider going to the 860 series (they're not M.2 form) and save even more with a negligible performance hit. I would also look into the future here a bit, because if you're video editing 1TB is definitely not enough space for everything. If the budget allows get an 7200rpm HDD you can use as a storage drive, or just add it in a few months down the line.

As others have said, I'd really recommend building it yourself. The hardest part of that whole process is picking components which you are already doing. If you can read instruction manuals, and google/youtube questions along the way it's seriously a breeze. The most likely thing you're going to fuck up is forgetting to plug something in, and I would bargain that random dude at Newegg is more prone to doing that because of negligence lol. The only real "tricky" part is installing the cpu cooler, everything else is Lego's.

would just like to point out that while it may be overkill the psu is 80+ gold certified and it is seasonic, who actually is the oem manufacturer for many other popular psu companies, so its pretty hard to get anymore reliable then that. i run my significantly more powerful rig on an 80+ bronze unit from seasonic that is 620w and ive had no issues what so ever.

Oh shit I totally didn't notice that! Seasonic is bomb, I've got one in mine as well!

I always make sure to spend a lot on the GPU considering Premiere can take full advantage of your GPU if you enable CUDA. That being said there's so many options out there it's insane. The last computer I bought for editing was a prebuilt gaming laptop and it's been a monster when it comes to editing 4k stuff.

In general I'd say 16gb of ram at a minimum, i7 processor (or equivalent) at a minimum, and then something similar to a 1660/2070 GPU. That would probably be more than enough for what you're looking to do.

I know it's not a definitive answer but if you can get something near to those specs at your price range you'd be golden. Also, you'll always save money with a custom build.
