Broken Drill Bits?

So me and some friends were building a rail this weekend. We used PVC pipes with dowels inside on a 2x4. We decided to drill some pilot holes through the whole works we wouldn't crack the pipe or split anything. We got like three holes drilled, but then we started breaking drill bits like crazy. We snapped like 3 or 4. We got the rail built, but I can't figure out what the heck was breaking those things? I've never ran into this before. Anyone else have this problem?

If you were just drilling through the wood and pvc I'd have to say the drills bits were weak, or like a bad batch or something.

haha yah plastic and wood should not break a drill bit.

make sure you are not pressing too hard, let the drill bit do the work. also you need to drill straight down and make sure you arent bending the bit.

ive broken a few building all my stuff. its probably cheap bits which was my problem... but i also broke a couple trying to get them started into the pvc when the bits were real dull and i was just pressing down too hard.
