Broken Collarbone

So u may or may not have seen my thread of me all hyped I finally got a 2 pretz 2. Ya so like 20 mins after that I broke my collarbone doing an nb3 over some sideways corrugated tube, slammed right on to ice. Super bummed, like I don’t even care about the pain I’m just so upset skiing might be over for the season. Has anyone ever broke their collarbone and if so how long I gotta wait till I can ski?

thanks

I feel like there’s a really good chance the season is not over for you depending on how bad the break was and how long the snow sticks around. Keep yo head up!

I broke mine like 2 years ago really bad (needed surgery) and it was like 8 weeks till I was back to 100%. Maybe like 4-5 weeks after was back on snow. Definitely not a season ender.

I broke mine and I would’ve been able to ski after five ish weeks if you’re taking it easy and staying grounded

I've taken 2 painkillers and this is still the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Sm respect to anyone that's been thru this.

I broke my collarbone trying to impress a girl at a playground, i was out for about 6 weeks. Some of the dumbest shit ive ever done

You hot a butterfly fragment in there. You'll probably end up getting a plate (I recommend you keep in permanently if possible I've got one on each side). You'll immediately feel better once you have it set with the plate and then a couple weeks before you can get out and cruise and maybe a month and a half before you can really ski again? Maybe you can focus on learning how to film or something while you heal.

Sucks though, but congrats on the 2p2!

Good to know thanks. And ya I might have to break out my drone or something while this heals.

sounds like you got fake pills

Let it heal right. Would give it 4 weeks for sure before park. Maybe longer. Ive broken mine 3 times and had 2 surgeries. Also its fucked now from one i didnt need surgery for smd my backs out of alignment i guess and i get wicked knots in ither side of back.

Stay hyped be careful.

Also know the pain. I broke mine new years day after moving to cranmore nh to ski park/ work park crew. Like a week into our park season. Missed everything till closing day mt snow and then had a tbi. Not a good season for me.

I started playing call of duty and skate with the controller to the side. Played like that for like s year after my thing healed.

Be careful dont be stupid. Heal up!

Wait so one got more messed up because you had surgery when you didn't need it? A little confused, just wanna make sure if that's what you meant I don't do the same thing.

Nah last time i broke it it was pretty clean but popped on me in my sleep. Ive got the bump now. Its not terrible and healed well. But i guess ny posture is sorta fucked from it and thats whats causing the knots.

But yeah idk. Bones suck.

Did mine last year had 8 weeks of skiing with just a sling for treatment so not too bad. Still hurt after season turns out i needed surgery so im now 3 months post op for a plate. good luck with recovery man

I did mine in late October a few seasons ago. I got surgery a week later (plate and 9 screws) and I felt perfectly fine 2 weeks later. I gave it a few more weeks because that was what my doctor recommended and I was back on snow by December.

did they give you tramadol? you must not have gotten any opioids if you can still feel your arm. I've broken my collarbones 3 times and had 1 surgery, order some Bone-Up by Jarrow labs and you'll be good to go.

I was prescribed Vicoden, works well now idk what the deal was yesterday. Hurts like a mf if move or walk though.

I'm late to this thread but supposedly there is a new rod procedure that has a faster recovery time and less complications than a plate for collarbone surgery. Where I heard about it:

Unfortunately I am about 10 minutes away from surgery so not too sure if I can change that now lol

Doh. Well heal up fast! Getting any kind of surgery is definitely better than getting no surgery. Friends of mine that didn't get their collarbone fixed have permanent loss of mobility in that arm, not a ton, but they can't lift their arm up to the same degree. It's worth it to get it fixed, since doctors used to just put you in a sling and send you on your way.

Good luck with the surgery. I broke mine 2 summers ago in the dumbest possible way. I was out filming my homies skate and went to the car to change my camera lens. When I was skating back to the spot I hit a pebble in the parking lot. Instinctively I saved the camera but the momentum sent me right onto my shoulder. Heard a huge pop and instantly knew I was fucked.

About a year later the same exact thing happened. The camera didn't survive that time haha.

What u think lol, Ik it’s bad

HOLY SHIT that's a big break. I was out 6 weeks and mine was still partially connected on the bottom. top half just splintered up. Honestly you're probably gonna have to get (I would expect you NEED) surgery, so who knows how long that will take to heal. I would bet that after like 4-5 weeks you can return to VERY LOW impact stuff, which for me was wakesurfing because I broke mine during the summer, but skiing, skating, wakeboarding (not applicable here), I would bet at LEAST 6 weeks, maybe closer to 8 cuz I'm not gonna lie I have like 4 friends that have broken their collarbone (one broke his like 4 times now I think?) and have never seen an xray look like that.

GOOD LUCK MAN and rest up! Hope they gave you some good pain meds or advil/tylenol is covering it!

Just got the surgery yesterday, not too sure how long I’ll be out for tho. And ya I messed my stuff up real bad, couldn’t believe it when the nurse came back with the X-ray.

Similar break 2 years ago in February. Plated up and finished the season 8 weeks later with ~10 days of groomer shredding.

Some breaks dont require surgery, some do. Its how the bone sits (together or not)

overshot hand drag on a pyramid to smashed collarbone in fragmented pieces. Needed surgery - plate and 8 screws. It'll take a little time to heal, you'll have a little loss of sensation due to cutting thru nerve for them to access the bone and set it to plate and the plate will be visible. Plating is the gold standard today for ORIF- Aaron Rodgers plays with a plate in his throwing arm. It sucks, my recovery was not super quick to 100%, your arm will artophy in a sling over weeks but you'll heal and you'll get back to you. You'll need time for the bone to heal though- the plate just keeps it together. You'll be back in the late spring but give it time rest it and heal it the right way don't rush it.

Broke my right collarbone twice (no surgeries though), most painful shit ever the first week or so after I swear. Both times I was back to feeling relatively normal in like 3 weeks, and was back to sports in about 5 weeks. Looks like your break was a lot worse than mine though, but I doubt the season is over for ya!

Can anyone find that video from ~2010 of Gus Kenworthy skiing Telluride park in a sling after having collarbone surgery? It was called A Sunny Afternoon by Goodie pocket films on vimeo but apparently they took it down.

Same here, 8 screws and a plate. Feeling better already but still in a sling, praying I can make my Utah trip last week of February but it’s looking like a no as of now

I broke my collarbone pretty bad doing a sw lip down a handrail. trailing tip didnt make it up and did this weird front slide with my trailing ski tip on the skirting. Needless to say caught my downhill edge on ice and got schmacked. Broke it in two places and the bone in the middle was vertical. Got a metal plate put in and was in a sling for three months. Had to sleep sitting up in a couch for 2.5 months cause I couldnt lay on my back. Four months till I could lift my arm halfway up to a horizontal position.

I've also coached kids who had a single clean break skiing bumps and were back in three weeks. Depends on the break really. Be thankful its just a wing and you'll bounce back with little to no lasting problems.
