Broken Back, -3000 gnar points

I broke my back on Saturday. It sucks a bit to not be able to ski for the next few weeks, but all in all Saturday wasn't even a bad day of skiing. Everyone I met was helpful and wanted to see me get to safety.

I was riding with a few friends at Snoqualmie's Summit Central (which isn't a spectacular mountain, but the season passes are super cheap and that's what counts) and I had taken a few laps through the greenhorn terrain park. We did a spreagle train, some zero spins, some threes. but got bored and headed over to the larger "Central Park."

From the lift I watched about 10 people case on the first jump. Not wanting to make the same mistake, I skied down, got low, got speed, and got airborne. I overshot the landing by a long distance. I landed pretty close to the start of the second jump in the line. I started flailing when I realized I was going to get about 25 feet of air on a 10 foot jump, and I came down hard on the tails of my skis, they toe released and I dug my heels in really hard. I could feel my spine compress on the landing. It was disgusting. I rolled over and dry heaved a bit. Some skier, I think he was wearing blue, came over to help me. I didn't get his name or anything, but he pulled my skis to the side and helped me crawl over to them. He wanted to get patrol, but I didn't want them. My buddy caught up to my by this point and helped me up on my skis.

One I was standing I felt a bit better, but I still felt like throwing up. I decided that I was just winded and I was just gonna ski it off. I skied down the run, and then tried to hit a propane tank jib. This was probably the dumbest idea I've ever had. The shock of landing on the tank almost dropped me, I slid off and kept skiing, but I was pretty sure there was something wrong with me by then.

**Skier in blue, if you are a NS member, I'd just like to thank you. You were right all along, I should have ditched my pride and ridden down with patrol.

It took me about 20 minutes to hike from Central Express to the lodge (maybe an 8th of mile?). I couldn't bend down to pick up my skis, so I had to hike with them on. I tried to nap it off in the lodge, but it kept hurting.

Finally, my friends convinced me to talk to patrol. They walked my spine. Noticed I was swelling pretty good, and wanted to backboard me. I didn't want to do it, but my friend (who is a firefighter) told me I was an idiot if I didn't go get an X-Ray.

Ski patrol was super friendly, they kept me joking and laughing while they put me on the backboard (which is about as fun to ride as it looks) and the EMT in the Ambulance was also very funny and friendly. The ride to the hospital was pretty cool. I can cross "ambulance ride" off of my bucket list now.

The X-Ray showed a compression fracture on t-12. I also have a lot of abdominal pain. I think the shock may have bruised me up on the inside a bit.

I just want to take the time to publicly thank everyone who helped me today. From the random people on the hill, to the ski patrol, to the EMT and doctor who checked me out at the hospital. I wasn't stoked on going to the hospital, but I'm glad I did now.

I may have lost a lot of GNAR points today, but at least I can still walk.'

Yeah dude, I definitely learned my lesson about swallowing pride and going to ski patrol earlier this year. My little brother and I were skiing, and he overshot this 25 foot step down by atleast 60 feet. I'm talking a huge drop. Backslaps right away and is just super messed up. He's obviously in a lot of pain and had the wind knocked out of him, but I figured he was fine and practically forced him to ski down and just head home, being the aggressive older brother that I am. Long story short, he had shattered his scapula and nearly punctured a lung, and had to take an ambulance ride to Utah children's hospital.

Sparknotes: Thinking that going to ski patrol results in a lack of pride is beyond stupid.

jesus man. i hit an up flat rail right after i broke my nose last week, and my friends thought *that* was pretty gnar. spine injuries and head injuries are just 2 things not to be fucked with. feel better.

>break back

>ski down

>only out for a couple of weeks

When you say a backboard is as fun to ride as it looks, you mean it was an amazing time right? Full body sledding ftw!

But really, that's impressive that you even tried to ski down +vibes man.

"Broke my back, then went and hit a jib" wish i had the balls to do this. I tore my Lcl and thought that was bad...

What jump line were you hitting? If it is the one farthest left, it is about 25 ft to start with. If it was the line farthest right, I've never seen any key case it, so that sucks that you saw that and overshot it( I've done it and it sucks)

lately i have been having dreams about overshooting tiny jumps, but i always end up ok.

in real life my stratagy it to put my feet slightly infront of me, twist 90 and try to land on my side, with my feet hitting first of course, just when landing try to intentionally bail, rather then trying to land all on ur feet, try to lay down right after ur feet hit

This. When i think broken back I think wheelchair for life. You sir did not lose any gnar points I can guarantee you that. +9000

Broken back = enable 90-degree backwards afterbang mode?
+300 gnar, as mentioned. Walk off a broken back, like a boss.

dude i broke my back overshooting a jump on a snowboard like 2006 but i didnt walk it off, my vision went red and i screamed like a bitch (it hurt really bad) then my friend went and got patrol. that vertebrae was t6.

Bmx dirt jumping in 2009 i nose cased a jump and crunched on my frame, i walked that one off, then went to the clinic but shock wore off in the waiting room and i passed out and woke up in the hospital and after some xrays and a cat scan it turned out i ruptured a kidney, fractured my first cervical vertebrae and tore a tendon off the other side of it. that one i sorta walked off.

Same here stress fracture in lower back. Did it while 270 on to a flatbar. Ski caught in something and landed full force on my back against the rail. Skied back down went to 1st aid who told me to ice and rest. That didn't work so I went to the hospital and they x-rayed my back. After waiting from 11 am to 5:00 pm they said I was free to go and to rest. Wait three days then go to another doctor who had me get an MRI to show I had a stress fracture.

A month later and yesterday was my first day back. I had to wear a back brace that entire time. Skiing with a back brace for 2 more weeks then I can go without it, but by then east coast is basically done.

Moral of the story back injuries are a bitch same with head injuries. Also how bad hospitals can be, 11 - 5 just to tell me to go home and ice. Vibes get better soon man.

I think a ligament injury would be harder to ski off with. You really only need the bones below your hips to ski anyway :p

Hope your doing better.

Hey, thanks to everyone for the support. I'm doing so much better this afternoon. I got some vicodin in my system and I'm walking around just fine. I go to the doctor tomorrow for the brace. The swelling is down and my mood is up. My girlfriend has been taking really good care of me and I've got good friends like NSer bztruk and my good ol' grandma who have been through this situation before and have been giving me some good tips on how to get by.

Damn that's shitty man. I'm sorry to hear. Was this the first jump at the top of the park or lower park? Also, I was up today. What time was it?

Im trying to understand how jibbin' with a broken back DOESN'T beat the Altoid Hummer. Im pretty sure McConkey would agree. Feel better man, only a few weeks? shit dude. That's luck.

I do believe you misspelled "life" in your signature. This would be acceptable were it a quote, however as it is not attributed to anyone, I can only assume it is the product of an inadequate third-grade education.

You know, because you can't learn anything once you've missed the period during which you were supposed to learn it.

When you feel like you broke something or heard something snap, listen to the person who is trying to help you, don't be a dick and say "I'm fine". In most cases, the person trying to help you is smarter and knows what's best.

Lesson learn.

Anyways, ++vibes. Get back on your skis soon bro!

Wow, that is almost word for word exactly the same thing that happened to me last winter, except I only skied down to the lodge before collapsing in pain and ski patrol coming and helping me out (Mad props to ski patrol, you guys are sick!).
Ended up going down to the hospital in an ambulance and being stuck on a backboard for what felt like hours (fucking sucks..) and also getting diagnosed with t12 compression fracture.
Main thing I just wanted to let you know TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK in recovery, make sure you do physio etc, and take it easy/don't over do it. I still have pain in my back this season sometimes, I think mainly due to the fact that I thought I was fine in the summer and had a job which required strenuous lifting for hours at a time and also not watching my posture Did have one upside though, back injury made me unfit for military service in Germany, fuck the draft haha.
Anyways, get better dude, hope it heals cleanly +vibes

This guy is smart. People should listen to him more.

I'm considering borrowing my dads telemark skis when I do get back. At least for the first few weeks. I'm a slow tele skier so I think it would keep me in check and low to the ground--two things I need to work on.

yea thats what i do. last week at killington i over shot the last jump on the stash by about 20 feet. i just went into a baseball slide and slid like 200 feet down the hill on my side. it was actually pretty fun and didnt hurt at all lol. a bunch of people even brought my skis and poles down to me. all in all great experience

Super bummer man.

I had a complete dislocation of my T10... I shouldn't be walking. I went through a lot of the same shit you did.

I was on a trampoline where I was currently working at Woodward in Northern Wisconsin. I basically folded myself in half and when I hit the trampoline again it snapped it back in. I got up and ran over to the trainers table because I was kind of in shock (no idea how I was able to get up and run.)

A couple minutes later everything started kicking in. My spinal cord got shocked so it started to feel like my legs were twisting and breaking and it felt like I had a truck on my back (I couldn't breathe).

To this day I have an indent where it happened because of the scar tissue that built up above and below it. Pretty intense experience. Unfortunately I've had two back surgeries since and two more on the way (unrelated things). My back is pretty fucked, but oddly enough my T10 doesn't bother me much.

Let it heal, listen to the docs and you'll be fine. Get a REAL good spine protector though. I don't ride without one.

Oh yeah, I had to get heli'd to Minnesota from Wisconsin. I remember the Heli ride but it was like two days later I found out I was in a different state. Crazy shit. haha.

Vibes... but why were you shredding park on the deepest POW weekend of the year? This is why the park is generally not open when it snows. It is way to hard to judge speed on jumps. Get better soon and then stomp something off a cliff at Alpental into to waste deep foam pit like snow. You couldn't have done this in the back country last weekend.

Some of my friends decided not to get the unlimited season pass :( I was the only one with a pass to alpental, so we rode central. I'm not gonna make that mistake again, :p

since my second break, i wear the thor impact rig, its got a kidney belt, need one of those, and an articulated spine guard, flexes forwards but not back, and it goes all the way to the bottom of my spine. only thing is, if you are lankey like me, might need to shorten down a bit or bulk up as they seem to be designed for people with trees for arms.
