Breck

I'm going to Breckenridge on Friday for a week. I've been there before, but it was a while back, so I have some questions for those of you who ski there often.

1. Many of my friends have never been out west, so they want to see as much of the mountain as possible. Are there any spots/trails on the mountain that you'd consider a must-see for one reason or another?

2. We're skiing three days, but our group is at odds over whether or not we should spend those three days skiing Breck. One of my friends has his heart set on going to Keystone once. That said, how long does it take to explore all of Breck? Would you suggest spending the third day there as well? Our condo's right near the bottom of the mountain, so my major concern has to do with commuting to Keystone and having that take up a good chunk of a day.

3. Lastly, what bars and off-mountain activities would you recommend?

I think the buses in summit are free. I could be wrong though. Don't see how a good chunk of your day would be spend commuting by going to keystone for a day unless you were planning on walking or something.

The snow out here (summit county) is horrible I wouldn't wast your time. Come back when there is better snow. But if you do like slush skiing then I guess you'll have fun.

Keystone doesn't have much snow, but breck is still pretty decent. Be sure to hit up peak 6 hike terrain, lake chutes, whale tail, and windows

The time you spend on the Keystone bus, you save by not using 5 chair.

Didn't know about the buses--good shit.

Perhaps the timing does blow a little, but the worst days in CO are presumably better than the best in NJ, so I'll take my chances.

Thanks man.

I can't really speak to dope, off the radar spots on the mountain... but I can speak to the bars :P

Happy Hour after skiing: Rita's is good, check out Kenosha Steak House or T-Bar on Peak 8.

Dinner: Mi Casa is good for Mexican, Mountain Flying Fish is good for sushi, Empire Burger is dope, a healthy option is Park and Main.

Late Night Happy Hour: usually 10pm-midnight... you can get great apps and specialty cocktails at a discount at Modis or Blue River Bistro.

Going Out: If you want a dive, check out Ollie's or The Pub. If you want to dance, have chicks get rowdy and see a bunch of WASTED tourists check out Brooklyn's, Liquid Lounge or Cecelia's.

There are a bunch of other good places but those are just a few!

If youre trying to ski park all day keystone A51 is where its at, keystone is also good to avoid the breck lift lines plus night skiing there is always fun. You could easily get a a solid feel for all of breck in two days of skiing as well.

I'm no local, but after spending multiple trips to summit over the past few years, I have to say definitely head over to Keystone for a day. The buses are free, and it's like a 30 minute ride which isn't bad at all. I prefer Key over Breck for the most part anyway. I believe the closest pickup spot for you would be at the bottom of the Breck connect gondola. I think the buses come 20 after every hour, but I'd definitely check to be sure.

Riding the imperial and hiking to the peak is something I'd definitely recommend you do. Pretty sweet view and skiing back down is usually pretty fun. You'll probably get the general feel of Breck after a full day of skiing, but you won't be able to experience it all even if you had a week. It's a pretty big place.

No idea on the snow as I'm in Michigan, but personally I always have a good time out there no matter the conditions.

This is my perspective coming from a 250ft vertical hill in Michigan so some of you locals may be groaning at my touristy views haha but yeah man it's always fun if you let it be. Enjoy!!

Like someone said, Breck has slightly better conditions right now than Key, but they are both still OK and a blast to tear up!

What I like to do sometimes to avoid the crazy traffic you can get on 70 is hit breck in the morning, then go over to keystone in the afternoon and ride until about 6 when the traffic lets up, so you guys could do that and catch the summit bus.

You can ski the entire mountain, peak 10->6 or vise versa, in like 1-2 hours depending on how crowded it is and how hard you're mobbing.

You guys will have a killer time for sure! Ill probably be doing some runs a keystone Sat. afternoon, maybe ill see ya! Enjoy!

Spend the majority of your time at Breck, but make time for Keystone...even if just for night skiing. The park is prime. Honestly if you got up at the crack of ass and worked left to right or right to left you will have skied most of Breck by 1pm. Keystone probably has more fun "pockets", but I'd agree that Breck holds up better due to more snow and higher altitude.

Both parks are fun. If you have three days put 2 at Breck and 1 at Keystone (any combination of mixing night and day) and you'll be happy. Time it right and get down the gondola (Breck) on the Summit Stage right at 12:05 (I think) and you'll be skiing at Keystone at 12:40 through 8pm.

listen to the friend with their head set on Keystone. Go there at least a day. Breck jumps are great, but the group of people always sitting at the top is ridiculous. Idk why you're so big on hiking and exploring the mountain when it's so shitty out

I went to CO a few weeks ago with my friend who had never been out west before. We liked copper mtn a lot better than breck. Breck had a better park than copper but copper had better tree skiing and upper mtn skiing.

I'll be in colorado next week to look at colleges but I'm gonna try to fit in a day at keystone. I'm Wondering if nightskiing there is worth it? The map made it look like the park isn't open for night skiing. Is that true?

the park is not open for night skiing this year. it can still be fun skiing there at night if thats your only option, but dont count on it being amazing or great park skiing at night.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Now that that's settled, does anyone know if it's possible to find cheap(er) lift tickets while I'm out there. My buddy just paid 415$ for a three-day lift ticket. How much more expensive (if at all) will they be if we decide to buy them at the mountain on Saturday? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can pretty much guarantee that the window rate is more. If you're planning to return next year though, you might want to check if an Epic Pass for next year purchased now is valid for the rest of this season. That's pretty common with purchasing season passes at the end of the year, not sure if Vail does this though.

they do. the epic local pass (abasin, breck, key plus 10 days at vail and beaver creek) is less than 600, its like 500 if you are a student. if you are planning a trip for next year its definitely something to think about. these rates dont last for long though
