Brass Edges. the future?

Flow, the snowboard manufacturer is using brass edges instead of steel edges on jib specific snowboards. the brass is softer that steel rails that you slide on so it doesnt crack, it absorbs the impact. apparently it works really well.

why isnt atomic or line hopping on this idea yet?

would you guys buy an invader or triplet with brass edges?
 
the only objection i would have to it would be is, isn't brass a soft metal? it might absorb the impact for a while but it would seem like the edges would wear down quickly. and you would have no option of ever sharpening them if need be like theres no park and an icy day
 
I suppose if turning wasn't an issue for you that would be a good idea. It would work on park-only skis, but I wouldn't even consider it for anything else.
 
sounds sweet and i have heard of it being used but is brass not considerably maluable? From ashop tech point of view it could cause a whole lot of problems.
 
if you don't want edges cracked out or torn out just get some troublemakers. both myself and my friend (who rips way harder then i do) have them. all this kid does is hit rails. his edges are completely rounded but nowhere are they cracking

wait until you see the guy building skis in france with granite....yes GRANITE sidewalls. I guess he is trying to get a patent on them now. I will probably post more about them when I hear more about them, but I guess it is really well done.
 
I think its a bad idea. Soft metal means they're gonna where alot faster as well as possibly distort. And the only times I have torn edges is, when the ski caught something, like an un noticed skate stop, or a sharp corner of concrete, inwhich those edges could have been titanium, they would have been pulled from the ski.
 
Granite? hmmm....rock and cold dont mix so well....i'd like to see how he is doing this.

and brass is soft enough that after a few rails, your edges would be round as shit...shitty for anything outside of park, dope for park.
 
I would suggest low grade diamond. If rounded underfoot, it would work well. The problem would come with the flex pattern, but you would never have to tune your skis.
 
I was a bit wrong....not granite sidewalls....but a granite strip, 1" wide, tip to tail in the middle of the ski.

It is a company called ZAI I believe. I guess there normal woodcore skis go for about $3,000 US, so cant imagine how much these must be.
 
the edges on the burton dominant slick move into the base under the boots so you are just sliding on the base material. i could see ski makers doing that before brass. if you are going to ahve soft metal edges why have edges at all?
 
yeah it would only work if you where riding rails all the time, other whise you would have to sharpen youre skis every week, and then you would evenaly have no edges
 
the rome agent has brass edges and inserts. it's just cheaper materials. all the other gimmik crap is a way of saying it's cool instead of saying it's cheap.
 
I'm sure there are some kind of composite plastics out there today that would make for a great edge for PARK specific jib ski. I think most companies are just looking at using the same materials in new ways.
 
uhm, brass can be remarkably strong. i forget exactly what it's made of, but it's an alloy. mainly, copper and zinc together in some kind of acid makes brass. i think how stong the acid is and how many parts of each ingredient determine the strength and color of it. i made it last year in a.p. chemistry. yes, copper is soft. very soft. somehow, the zinc solidifies it. anywho, to prove my point, many instruments are made with brass. it's relatively easy it is to dent the body of a trumpet, while it's extremely hard to dent the horn part. just different concentrations and such. also, i think they use a very small portion of tin depending on it's use. not sure what it does... but really. brass can be really strong.
 
yeah but you wouldnt buy these skis if u wanted them outta the park, it would be a urban/park ski thing

like a powder ski(pontoon idea, pow specific)
 
I like the idea mentioned about the edges going into the ski under your foot. That sounds like it would be perfect for a park ski. I can only wonder what it would feel like to slide half on your edge, half off if you didnt hit that rail just right
 
rome had it first....but here is the question...are you going to pay the price for such edges.....brass is fuckin expensive compared to regular metal...not to mention on soft it is. What if after a season of use the edges has worn down soo much that you just start smashing the ski. Humm....time will tell with these edges.
 
i really like the ride gel sidewalls....i think those an an interesting idea right there.
 
yeah spot on, i havent cracked an edge since ive had em either, plenty of street rail abuse but no edge cracks.
 
this year's ninthward comte (Mik D's) have brass edges. there just aren't too many of 9's skis out yet so most people haven't seen them yet.
