Boycott the Olypmics

...got tired of him rambling about nothing other than "It's not what it's about man"

"Olympic sports don't even belong in the Olympics"

Didn't listen to the rest, couldn't stand looking at his fucked up grill.

I'm pretty much indifferent on the Olympics though, lots of good, but also a lot of bullshit involved.

I fail to see how having trained monkeys dance on international television while wearing matching candy-cane suits will keep me from enjoying my powder turns.

I also have no problem with an opportunity for the brands who do not get racing exposure to share in the international spotlight.

YMMV

^ this

Its all good , sure there will be some bad , but the influx in popularity will have way more pros then cons.

Resorts will make more money and expand. Brand will make more money and hold more events , pay for movies and all the jazz. Its all good just chill

if you're against freestyle in the olympics, you're probably a hipster who got butthurt because his sport was "underground" and now that it's becoming "mainstream" it's no longer cool ....

if you have problems with the olympics and their judging format or the way they do stuff, thats fine, but you have to understand that more exposure of the sport will most likely do good to out sport....

nobody is forcing you to watch or enjoy the olympics, just be glad that after so many years our sports can finally get the worldwide publicity it deserves, because goddamn, skiing is awesome and everyone deserves to know it !

just my 0.02$

^

this. Its gonna happen, and it WILL be successful because skiing is such an F'in blast to watch. instead of protesting, why not sit back and bask in some serious international recognition of how pimp tan our sport has become. even if all 1000ish active members boycotted the olympics, it wouldnt even make a blip.

fucking first world gripes in here get to me.

i don't consider a sport getting incredibly popular and it becoming all about the money/fame a good thing. Look what happened to snowboarding and skateboarding (not in the olympics obvi). How many douche bags are in those sports just because it's the "cool" thing to do? how many people do you see at the mountain that just make you want to pull your hair out?

i largely agree with what he said. Our side of the sport started to get away from all the structure and rules, so why the hell is everyone so stoked for it go go back? I don't see the olympics driving the sport forward anymore then xgames would.

^ but more people in the sport means more money for the companies, which in turn will mean better products at a possibly cheaper price, its only a good thing. Also if more people ski there is the potentail for more resorts to open which can only be good.

Also remeber Xgames is only big in the US. Its hard to watch anywhere else in the world, wheras the olympics will gain so much more exposure. I think personly it can only be a good thing.

Dude is a moron. Ignorant moron who hasn't done any research to back up his ranting.

1) IOC is not a "mega corporation"

2) Many past hosts of the Olympics have reported net profit for the region, games have come close to budget etc. No cities have "gone bankrupt". Of course there have been fuck ups in the past (Montreal for example).

i respect your outlook on the subject but when weighing out the pros and cons..i just cant find means to justify boycotting the olympics

fuck

I didn't mean to rally people to boycott the olympics, I should have put a question mark in the thread title. Just wanted to see people's viewpoint on the subject cuz I thought the video brought up some valid points

im down with what that guy said for the most part

honestly i dont really care though as long as i can go skiing and have fun still

anyone who has access/can afford/wants to ski is already skiing. just a thought. maybe not entirely true, but I'd say true enough where you'd notice negligible difference in lift line. parks would get much more crowded I'd think.

if traffic will increase noticeably in the resorts, so will their profits and consequentially they'll get a chance to upgrade their infrastructure, if the traffic will increase due to freestyle skiing in the olympics (highly unlikely if you ask me) the freestyle crowd will increase and resorts will try to conform to their needs => more/bigger/better parks ....

just my thoughts, don't think skiing is going to suddenly "blow-up" though .....

worst thread on NS. the olympics are about being the best in the world at what you do, no matter what it is. If your sport is offered and you win, you are the best. If not we then have other venues to judge who is the best. Yeah its a big money maker but so is Wal-Mart where this kid buys all of his shit. And so is Solomon, Surface, Rossi, Faction, Head, Armada, Line, Saga, ect... Every company that this kid and every one of us has ever purchased a single item from is a money making "scheme" according to this kid. Its what makes the world go round. Welcome to life

except that winning the olympics doesn't necessarily mean you're the best in the world...

especially for sports like ours ....

^since our sport isn't offered. Hence why we have different comps to decide who is best at what. Which changes pretty much daily.

and I'm still going to ski everything else!

maybe if we're lucky, the tight panted hipster douchebags will stop skiing because it's gone mainstream.

There was just a hint of sarcasm in my first response... But on a more serious note, just becuase resorts make more money, does not mean they will expand their terrain and update their lifts. Many are leased and just don't have the option to expand or to tear up the land.

true...but in the end i think we know all of this won't be happening ....

the olympics isn't suddenly gonna get thousands of people to pick up (park)skiing ....

i really just cant wait for people to get over the idea that skiing isn't as cool as snowboarding, and that when you say your going skiing you don't mean going to sit in the lodge all day and complain about being cold as your gillet and other such r.a.h. clothing doesn't keep you warm enough, and that you acctually mean your going to shred some pow, do big lines or slay shit in the park (expecting less of the big lines and pow shred recognition). I want my non skier friends not to confuse me with a snowboarder and when i tell them i freeski, they will not give me a weird look as if to say "and in English?"

how so? you wouldn't think that anyone privileged enough and with enough motivation to ski has already gone skiing? and you wouldn't think that those who really enjoy it ski about as much as they are able to ski? so that would go to say most people who can and want to ski do ski, meaning lift lines will not change.
