Boreal Pipe closed

Sorry everyone but the Zaugg broke tonight.

We were taking some extra time tonight and give the left wall some extra TLC. It has taken a beating with the heavy rider traffic and the huge temp swings from day to night this week. There was no way to make it ridable tonight to the standard that everyone expects it to be so it will be closed until we make repairs and I can finish what I started to the left wall. It might be something as simple as a broken bolt that holds the gearbox to the frame but I couldn't tell for sure without taking the whole thing apart. The mechanics will take it apart in the morning and hopefully it's nothing more serious and it will be back up and running in no time. Can only hope for the best.

Sorry for the bad news but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up and an explaination before they went to Boreal and found out the hard way.

were you able to get it fixed? i think a few of us were thinkin about heading up tonight. also do you have an official schedule for when you cut the pipe for the night park... i think the last time i was there it was from 4-5? but i have no concept of time when im skiin'

The first time the problem was with the 6 year old snowcat that pushes the zaugg. A snowcat needs extensive and expensive modifications to push a zaugg and we only have one cat setup for it.

no word yet from the mechanics on what is broken with the zaugg this time, which by the way is the first time the machine has broken. But as far as I could tell last night was its just a broken bolt but in a very hard place to replace without taking it just about completely apart.

Becca, regarding the schedule...we have posted on the snow report and on the website report and on the interactive trail map and on jibassicpark.com that the window for cutting is 2-6pm everyday. Depending on the weather it might be 2-4pm, 3-4pm, 4-6pm or the whole 4 hours from 2-6pm. Everyone should be prepared for the pipe to be closed 2-6pm that way everything extra is just bonus time.

The warmer the weather, the earlier I will recut so I can lock in moisture into the walls for a better refreeze.

The pipe will reopen only after the walls have refrozen but by 6pm barring any break downs or special events that interupt the schedule.

I also recut at 7am on my days wed-sun. On mon/tues, Stu is cutting only once in the afternoon when he covers my days off.

I understand how much people want to ride pipe at night. I hope people understand the work and the importance of the timing of that work to make a good night pipe possible and yet still have a quality day pipe as well. But you know, you cant please everyone all of the time. When the pipe gets sessed hard at night and the morning cut suffers because the snow is too cold and dry..I get a ear full from the day riders and there are alot more of them and they pay alot more for their tickets and passes and their voices are heard alot louder by me(when I try to get in few runs during the day they find me are like "what the F#$% happened to the pipe" and then they leave to go ride nstars pipe)..When the pipe is closed for 3hours in the afternoon the nightriders whine..Imagine the level of whining if we didn't recut every afternoon and it was left sluffed and kinked and frozen for nights. I'm not saying you guys are whining but alot of people do whine about the pipe and they have no idea how good they are getting it for nights with the recut. But at least the whining is about the timing of the cuts and not that the pipe sucks. Maintaining the overall quality of the pipe, looking out for its health long term and satisfing the expectations of the day riders will always be priority over having the pipe open for nights if it ever comes to that.

Hey, I come from the midwest and CO where pipes are cut (at best) once a week......no complaints here.

Now if I could only not suck so much at it, that would be great.

i think everyone is pretty much stoked on the pipe, its not under or over vert and you can pop without worrying about landing at the bottom... and impressed by the level of dedication you put into cutting it... me and kim were there on friday and skied for 7 hours because it was so fun...i pretty much had to drag her off the mountain cause she didnt wanna leave! haha. ill be up tonight even if the pipes not open there are tons of box tricks to learn

Hey, thats my problem with pipe. I get to where I can air out a few feet, get confident, and then pop back in to my death and lose it all.

Good to know, Ill have to check it out.
