Boom Camera Shots

why dont you take some from the middle of the table? those look the same as if you were just standing on the side of the jump...
 
get way closer if you're using a fisheye

most of the time i find booms are pretty useless though, you can get sicker shots just standing near the lip without one
 
You shouldn't use your wide angle, with the jib arm you'll be moving back so if you set it up right you'll get a perfect shot and the skier won't be tiny. Jib arms are dope though.
 
wow that didnt take long to go south i took alot of angles on that jump when the clips are real size the skiers look good
 
sorry i should have atleast given some constructive criticism..

if your going to use it with the fisheye then atleast put it in the middle of the table so you can see them drop in, but if your going to use it from that spot then don't even use the fisheye because you can barely even see the skier at the end of the shot.
 
Well you should have posted to good ones then, what did you expect if you posted the bad ones?
 
boom shots are dope but that was a waste from that angle , bring that shit close up on the deck or pull back with long lens
 
In my personal opinion the best boom shots have lateral motion as well as vertical motion. Also, if you want to use your wide angle, try zooming in approx. 10% to eliminate the vignette you are getting. With a boom, the more detail and objects you have in the foreground the more effective the utility as you will see more camera motion.
 
haha wow thats funny, and for the record, it was his first time using this HOMEMADE boom, yeah thats right he made it in his damn shed or something, annd he also got some different shots on a dfd box that should have come out better than you guys think these ones have.
 
well you see craig knows whats up, he was up till midnight the day before finishing that boom soo i think he did a damn good job at it for the first angle he ever tried with his own arm. Next time he probably wont use the fish eye... I dont think he needed to hear that from about 30 people who probably film worse then my grandma. Wait till you see what he puts togeather at the end of the season it'll be dank im sure of it
 
^word, props to those of you who were either supportive outright or attempted to give some semblance of usefull advice. As for the smack talking majority I just have to ask what's easier, making a homemade boom with your own blood sweat and tears or typing a couple pointless, smartass remarks?
 
I definatly took some good ideas out of this thread but definatly alot of crap. But the boom wasent that hard to make but still got some tweaking to do to make it easier to use and move around.
 
Stuff like that is what he was looking for with this thread. Good advice and gave a legit opinion
 
that has a lot of sick potential...you should take a pic of this boom. kinda intrested to see what it looks like and how you made it.

when did you guys shoot this? i was at the face saturday and sunday but didn't spend much time in the park at all. the summit was too sick and both days and mountain run was a fucking blast on sunday. in all the times i've been there this weekend was easily the best weather/conditions i've ever seen there... and cool shots, once you get it dialed in those will be dope.
 
that boom is sick. i mean the shots were a little far away but i bet it looks better on a bigger screen too. try putting some lateral motion into the shots too. i like it tho
 
yea def move closer to the table or zoom in and throw in some horozontal motion too

it would be cool to follow the skier in the air on an arc with the boom if you want a sick shot
 
the only problem with it is that the piece that lets it have all the great motion was weak plastic so after a while we couldent pan there are deff a few pan shots/up down shots
 
I'm continually amazed at the lack of constructive criticism that goes

on in this site. Not only is everyone a pro skier, but a professional

videographer who feel the need to pick a part everything someone else

does. I think this dude deserves a bit of props for building his own

crane and then posting it online because he's stoked on the shots.

Sure, you got to assume that it might warrant criticism, but at least

do him the favor of listing reasons why it did or didn't work, instead

of just being an ass to be an ass.
 
maybe try booming up from the landing, looking over the deck at the front/side of the lip to see them boosting in to the air just as they take off
 
The kid you quoted's really good friend, Trent, made his boom as well from scratch as well.
So cant really throw that at him.
Booms can be hard to turn quickly if you dont have a rotating head on top.
Definitely dont use the fishey with it.
If your going to stand behind the lip like that, the boom shot start to where all you see is the white from the lip and then moves up to the skier as hes taking off it.
If you want to see the best boom shots just watch anything from Isenseven.
they know what they are doing with them.

 
you have no need for a boom. learn to make movies with just handheld/tripod. when you get to MSP/poorboyz/TGR level, then you're good enough to get a boom. (and use it right)

not hating, just saying you really don't need one for most shots, it'll just get in the way of your shots. use the boom for the shot, not the shot for the boom.
 
props on the crane man. they can add a lot to your production value, but keep in mind, any gear you acquire is a multiplier.

by that I mean it will multiply your footage's quality. If its a good angle, good equipment will make it looks better, but if its a rough angle or mediocre subject matter, good equipment will make it look worse.

an HD camera will make a good shot look excellent, but a shitty shot with HD just makes more shit visible. hope that makes sense.

anyhow, your shots are good. When I use my crane, I find a spot where it looks good from a tripod then setup my crane there.
