the heart and the fist-eric greitens

^the last one is a little dry in some parts but its prettier humbling and motivation, and its a true story

If that embed doesent work... Slaughterhouse Five, best book in the universe. It isn't a series, just so you know.

A few essentials anyone should read if they can.

Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche

Nausea, Sartre

Ethics, Moore

The three critiques (Practical Reason, Pure Reason, and Judgment), Kant - I recommend starting with Judgment and ending with pure reason

The Prince, Machiavelli

The Republic, Plato

Euthphyro, Plato

Leviathan, Hobbes

Nobody's mentioned Charles Bukowski. I've enjoyed all his writing, but especially Ham on Rye

Hollywood

Women

He also writes some pretty awesome poetry.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE BOOKS. read them all when I was 12 years old. Don't remember much, but the illustrations are out of this world.

Not yet.

I forgot to add a few to the list, I was short on time

Phaedo by Plato. Phaedo is my favorite dialogue.

Either Or, Kierkegaard

The sickness unto death, Kierkegaard

A treatise of Human Nature, Hume

Science of Logic, Hegel. Purely to see the relations between Hegel and the sophists of Socrates's time.

I'm glad to see Bukowski evokes such powerful opinions. I didn't expect my karma to take a hit in a literary thread, but i'm sure Bukowski would be proud.

If you're really into WWII era history, I'd recommend anything by William Shirer. Bit dry to read, but loaded with information. Also, "Colditz: The Full Story" for an interesting read on basically the "highest security" POW camp during WWII Germany.

The title of DOOM's most recent album, Born Like This, is derived from a Bukowski poem. And one the songs, Cellz, contains a excerpt from it. Cool stuff

The Thief was good. i read it like 6 years ago after i finished it i became obsessed with lock picking. pretty sad but hey know i know how to pick a lock

I'm reading the whole jack ryan series, probably my favorite book series. tom clancy writes amazing books. kinda funny all my friends are astonished that i read 800 page books.

my favorite

If anyone enjoys listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis's bio, "Scar Tissue" gives you a crazy backdrop on his life. It was a great read and you can tell what almos every one of their songs is about from reading it.

Some of these suggestions kill me. The Alchemist and Siddartha are both awful books. The only reason I could see anybody ever reading them is if you're high as fuck and you want something pseudo-spiritual to read.

A better book? Read The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.

The Power of One. easily the best book I have ever read. not to mention its one of those books that you won't want to put down.

posted this before i read other replies, Im really surprised that nobody mentioned it before me.

on another note: Ender's Game has to be my second favorite, followed by The Golem's Eye trilogy
