Books you Should definitely Read

some great recs already. i will second anything by kerouac- i prefer some of his lesser knowns, the lonesome traveler, desolation angels, dr sax. you cant go wrong with hemingway- sun also rises, islands in the stream, green hills of africa, old man and the sea. so bad ass. lord of the rings trilogy slays really hard. for non fiction: the elegant universe, by brian greene. about string theory, extra dimensions, black holes. catch a fire, bob marley biography. any mountaineering book by reinhold messner, first to climb all 8000 meter peaks.

Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese is an incredible fiction.

I've really enjoyed Michael Pollan's books: The Omnivore's Dilemma is incredibly eye opening and will change the way you eat; followed up by In Defense of Food.

Howard Frank Mosher is an incredible story teller. All of his books are based in Vermont: the best are A Stranger In The Kingdom, and Disappearances. Funny, witty, smart, and highly entertaining.

for fiction:

the most epic book i've ever read (full-on fantasy land, at least as good as LOTR) was "memory, sorrow and thorn". fucking epic.

"shogun": a tale of white man's first contact with the japanese. has war, sex, and culture shock. pretty damn good book.

some easier reads:

Where eagles dare: classic james bond-esque book.

malcom gladwell (an author) has been mentioned 3-4 times already in this thread, i'd like to re-endorse. his books are all about sociology/physcology, but written in a really interesting and fun way. every single book of his is a good choice, though i thought "blink" was the best. non-fiction.

for a lower reading level (i have no idea your age or reading level, no offense)

if you're new-ish to books, try the redwall series. dont go too hard to fast. you'll just kill yourself and hate reading. these books are enjoyable for any reading level.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I'm going to get over to the book store sometime this week.

The sort of books Im looking for are ones that in general you can finish and hopefully have some sort of new out look on life, something you can walk away from feeling like it impacted you in someway and give hope for the future and motivate you to be awesome
 
Anything by Ken Follett. I just finished Fall of Giants and it was great. Should keep you busy for a while as it is nearly 1000 pages.

They aren't neccesarily a "series" persay. Ender's Shadow occurs during the same period of time as Ender's Game and follows the same story, but from a different characters viewpoint. Orson Scott Card calls it a companion novel. But all in all these books kick ass and you can get reallyy into them.

But back to the OP,

Lonesome Dove is a killer western and probably my fav book of all time.

Stephen King's newest book 11/22/63 is awesome, a fictional account of a time traveler from current times trying to stop the JFK assassination.

Michael Crichton is one of my fav authors. Take a look at "Next" and "Sphere"

If you haven't read them read the classic Stephen King stuff like "It" "The Shining" and "Pet Sematary" (Way better than the movies IMO)

1984 and Animal Farm (Both George Orwell)

Shit I have a whole freaking library of books at home and I just can't think of any more titles. I will come back to this thread though.

 
OH yeah Ken Follett is boss as fuck. Fall of Giant's is a glorious book. I'm starting Pillar's of The Earth tonight.

Check out "On The Wings of Angel's" by him as well.

except the narrator and main character of The Sun Also Rises is impotent...but still, yeah, i guess. While we're at it, A Farewell To Arms is my favorite Hemingway novel. or The Old Man and the Sea, but some will say its a novella and not a novel. his short stories are also dope if you want something less long. really, you can't go wrong with anything anyone has said so far
 
The Autobiography of Malcom X is killer. Also, Up From Slavery is Booker T. Washington's autobio, Lone Survivor is a non fiction account of a SEAL who survives afghani ambush and shit. Superr gnarly. Tom Clancy novels are always good if you are into military type action shit. The whole Hannibal series is awesome as well.
 
just read this as well. got super pissed off though at the end because i wasnt able to find the oprah interviews online which i was really looking forward to but o well. def worth reading
 
I was going to recommend Pollan as well, I'm reading Botany of Desire right now, and LOVE it.

Also, in addition to plenty of other books already down, Jack London is fabulous.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is also one of my favorites.

And Ernest Hemingway too.
 
I'm 18 years old and I think I've read about a book a year on average throughout my whole life (excluding reading kids books to kids).

At the moment I'm addicted to fifty shades trilogy, it's been referred to as porn for women by quite a few.
