Bombproof Ski Brands?

Hey everyone,

I have a bad habit of wrecking skis unintentionally - usually due to below-surface rocks because of my weight/skiing style.

I 24yo, am 6'4" and 215-245lbs with a very advanced skiing ability (raced, did park, do big mountain). I want your input on which brands/skis you think I should rock this next season.

I've blown up 2017 solomons last year, and 2019 Scott punisher 186cm 105mm underfoot's this year and i can't help but think there is something more/less indestructible for me out there (however my backup pair - THall Armadas 176cm 89w - have held up great for 8 years). The damage has been mostly core shots and sidewall/edge blowouts. I'm looking for a 100+ width ski that lets me do super G/ downhill turns with my ass to the corduroy, as well as lets me have a decent amount of play for high-bowl turns.

ON3P was a brand recommended to me, as well as Shaggy's (small local vendor), K2, and Icelantic. Kind of leaning towards ON3P/Icelantics. ON3P because of the user reviews, and Icelantics because of the thickness of the ski.

Please let me know your recommendations via comment and poll, and why you think so.

Is there any hope for me? or will i just churn through skis every season until i'm an old man?

I should also add that I ski mostly CO EpicPass mountains (breck, vail, crested, beaver creek), and NoMich mountains (Nub's nob, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Mt. Bohemia).

EDIT: My repair guys in Breck told me that I'm shit out of luck to find ski's i won't wreck. Please tell me this isn't true.

In my experience, ON3P and Moment have the best durability. I've put my Deathwishes through the wringer for three seasons, and they are in better condition than some demo skis I've seen.

they’re only a 98mm but in my experience the j skis allplay is a great ski, performs well in park, powder, groomers, and i have about 50 days on them with just a bit of chipping in the tips and tails

Thanks for this. I haven't ever heard of Moment before.

I don't doubt you, i'm just looking for a 100+ ski that can operate as my daily driver during high-altitude pow days to low-alt slush days. I already have a sub 100 ski as my backup. I want to carve in march, and hit the high bowls in january without throwing a $grand down the drain. I know it's an exaggeration but basically i'm looking for a wider daily driver that doesn't fail me.

Thanks for your post.

I would say not K2, or at least in my experience my mindbenders are less durable than my j skis. I also ski summit and hit a lot of rocks.

In general I think heavy skis are going to be most durable. On3p wrengade could be a good bet.

Ik not everyone has this experience with k2 but the 2 skis of theirs I’ve skied press and currently marksman have both held up amazingly. A season and a half on the marksman just some top sheet chips and one edge crack. My old press I skied for a season and they held up fine but the topsheet chipped really easily

at this point i'm not really concerned about topsheet, as my cores/sidewalls always give way first. Are you a heavier skiier like I am? or could you offer insights to K2 core/sidwall/edge durability?

I’m a bit fat 180lbs and about 5’ 10” and I’ve had 1 edge crack after a season and a half on the marksman which amazed me. The edges seem thicker than all my friends skis even the ones who ski on3ps. Idk if it’s their edges are worn down from skis being older or what. Also the k2 twintech sidewall have held up great only one chip to the core and its right where the topsheet meets it. You can see how thick they are from it. I’d grab a picture but it’s filled with epoxy rn. There’s plenty of dents in my side wall and non of them but where it meets the topsheet have gotten to the core. I personally consider myself a heavier skier for my size. Hope this helps

Yea I mean could just be bad luck. I compressed an edge pretty good like 3rd day on my mindbenders (amazing skis by the way). Granted local skis shop did an awesome job fixing them. My j skis somehow have no core shots or edge issues despite probably 100 days of the same type or abuse...but again could totally be luck. Need to get Dolan to just hit the edges with a hammer repeatedly and record damage

Shaggy's last a long time cause everyone who skis them is 40+. Met one guy who rode park a lot on the Sarge model who said durability was average. Also have heard horror stories from their early years but believe they have gotten past that now. Uf bombproof is your goal I vote ON3P.

I don’t ski the same way you do but me and some others have skied black crows and they’re super tough for all mountain charging

And to add, check out Bernie Rosow on IG for model recommendations

awesome. thanks for your input!

On3p jeffreys, moment, Icelantics, shaggys I’ve heard great things about, and k2’s are actually pretty durable in my experience, poachers are more durable than reckoners forsure

I definitely have bias in this response but I also ski mostly Colorado mountains and neglect "early season conditions" signs. I've had a pair of fat-ypus D-Senders that are on their 4th season that I use as my daily and I just got my 1st coreshot. Now I don't think any ski out there is 100% bombproof, but I've had more like out of these skis than any other I've rode!

Thought about this for a second. My slant skis are probably the most durable I’ve had. Bamboo sidewalls/core with carbon fiber underneath the core. Edges are hand formed and glued prior to pressing. Durasurf 4001 base (same as ON3P and moment). I ride them hard.
