Bode Miller's thoughts on Russia's LGBT Law

Thoughts from Bode, this was from yesterday“I think it is absolutely embarrassing there are countries and people who are that intolerant or that ignorant,” Miller told reporters Monday at the U.S. Olympic media summit. “It’s not the first time. We have been dealing with human rights issues since there were humans.

“My main emotion when I hear and deal with situations like that is embarrassment. As a human being, I think it is embarrassing.”

Miller also said it was “hypocritical and unfair” that athletes are told they cannot express views about such subjects at the Olympics.

“There are politics in sport and athletics,” he said. “They always are intertwined, even though people try to keep them separate. Asking an athlete to go somewhere and compete and be a representative of that philosophy and all the different crap that kind of goes along with it and then telling them they can’t tell them they express their views or they can’t say what they believe is pretty hypocritical and unfair.

I know this has already been talked about but this got me thinking. Is this alright for athletes to speak out against a country like Russia vs. the World Cup being in Qatar. How can a country (Qatar and the UAE) host the World cup and how will effect the World Soccer stage. Any thoughts?

I'm asking more along the lines of the World Cup being held in Qatar and how the strong Muslim influence will effect the global party that is the World cup. No booze, woman driving or being out alone for that matter. Just got me thinking about all the regulations that the UAE have in place and how this will be handled with a bunch of drunk soccer fans from all over the globe coming to party.

Any chance you can rewrite this so we can have some idea of what the fuck you are trying to say or possibly ask?

Not sure how hard this is to understand. The Athletes are starting to speak out against Russia for their stance on the LGBT community. With the upcoming 2020 World Cup being held in Qatar (UAE) anybody have any concerns about hosting a World party so to speak in a country that is way more controlling than Russia. Just an example Qatar still has Sharia law. I'm not trying to make a political statement, I'm just curious as to how other feel about the World Cup being held in such a restrictive part of the world. What will happen if players or fans do speak up against the Islamic law that is in place.

The only problem with the World Cup being held in Qatar is that it's going to be way too fucking hot for the players to actually play at their best.

I still think Bode is a badass for getting drunk, skiing fast, and telling the PC media to suck his medal winning dick.

Bode is seriously the epitome of the New Hampshire state motto.

That last paragraph pissed me off. I am so sick of the media, and almost everyone in particular thinking athletes aren't allowed to have an opinion on things. Its absurd.

Damn it, was hoping this would be about Bode going on a drunk rant about how theres no room for gays on the mountain.

Good for him tho, finally getting some good media attention

Yeah, Bode's the fucking man.

The hate he got/gets for the 2006 olympics is bullshit. He placed 5th in downhill, 6th in GS, which aren't exactly bad results, and then DNF'd in super g and slalom, which happens all the fucking time in ski racing. It's not like he was placing in the 20's in each event.

On phone but about Qatar: top FIFA officials have recently admitted bribery (oil money) was part of he bidding process - legal issue. Also just come out that several foreign workers have died while constructing World Cup facilities due to slave like labour camp camp conditions - human rights problem.

I don

Bode's smart, but you need to do your homework on the UAE. Here is one fact, over 90% of their population is foreigners. The only thing to worry about with the World cup being there is heat stroke.

uhhhh we're talking about Qatar not the UAE and your statement actually hasn't contributed anything. yeah lots of foreign workers, yeah they might make more than they would back home but its medieval slave like conditions. for a sport governing body that is trying to bring world cups to every corner of the world you would hope FIFA would be more sensitive to such realities and more transparent in their dealings.

the world cup and olympics are first most about sports and the athletes. but bode is right that politics are never far behind. i think the athletes should be allowed to voice their opinions, no harm in that.

i personally wont be attending any of these events though. way rather hit a world cup in brazil or europe than in fucking russia or qatar.

Russia getting the world cup? Eh... okay, well, sure, why not them.

Qatar getting the world cup? If there is any nation in the middle east that should be able to host that, it's MAYBE Saudi Arabia... I'd actually say Turkey over any of them if you want to consider them Middle east... and I'd say Turkey by a mile.

They should have that cup stripped away. Qatari people might be pissed, but there's maybe 200k native Qataris? I think Qatar is smaller than the Portland Oregon metro area...

the Province of Saskatchewan is more equipped to host a world cup on it's own than Qatar... Seriously.

What's your problem? I'm not even fucking picking sides of the topic just stating there is already a huge thread about Russias LGBT laws....

Putin was a lieutenant colonel with the KGB before becoming a politician. Bode would not fare well.
