thats right already someone dead from an avalanche here in Colorado. sucks when people get caught in avalanches even if they were stupid to ski it
 
avies are an ever-present danger. make sure you have gear and know how to use it if you go in the back country.
 
so i hope that you knew this person, were with this person, so that you can be name calling someone that past away. who are you to be judging anyway????
 
well the dude that was killed was by himself and without a beacon. Not the smartest idea in the backcountry, even at a place that gets skied a lot like berthoud. Sucks that he died, but his stupidity was his own downfall in this case.
 
glad that your not judging, hopefully you can pass some of your education onto other people who might not have. Its to bad that more people aren't educated about the dangers of backcountry skiing. And sad to hear that anyone passes away regardless of their education.
 
I think its alot of these new videos coming out and guys getin gloriously dragged down by avy's and everyone is like wow shit crazy. But don't think yeah they will make you dead.
 
none of the shots in movies are ever of serious avalanches. i can count on one hand the number of serious avies i have seen in the last 5 years in videos. will burks in soul purpose being the last one. they are not cool, and should definitely be avoided at all costs.
 
powder had an article recently on avalanche deaths, and they said that the annual death rate isn't coming down so...

the annual rate isnt going down but there is also increased BC use, they just don't have a way to accurately track use. So relatively it's prolly going down.
 
yeah, a lot of the movies is just slough, or small avalanches, but these things can kill entire villages, like Juneau in AK or a lot of places in Europe. I saw a documentary on it last year and it really made me think twice. One guy who was mining survived one avalanche, dug himself out, then got buried by another avalanche! And he made it alive! But most ppl don't have that luck.
 
There are very very few actual avalanches in movies. Most of the time it is just the slough that they intentionally get in the shot with the skier, not a real avalanche.
 
that sux big time its noo good to see that happeneing especially this early in the season but i suppose that it is innevitable.
 
Why is everyone saying this?? The shit that seth morrison is setting off in War is I think what the original guy is talking about how people see it in movies and think its okay. No one is talking about sluff, which can kill you too. I have never seen a park movie with as many avies as war, I think JP sets off a pretty big one too. But shit like that can easily kill any of us regular guys who arent seth morrison with the MSP crew in alaska,
 
When he says that I think he is meaning lately. I have noticed alot of the movies this year have shots of so many skiers setting off avalanches then just skiing over them cause they have huge fat skis. That kind of shit will could most of us and I dont know how much good a ski company is doing by glorifying it...although I admit it is entertaining to watch. Some people just dont know their limits though
 
Agreed. There are plenty of big avies shown in movies...they just don't generally show them from start to finish, nor do they show the rescue, if one is needed. Guys skiing big lines generally have a heli crew watching them as well as a few, if not several, others below who will be on it the instant a rescue would be necessary.
 
So whats the avy danger like in Ohio? I have seen many close calls in videos the last few years. Slough management is a skill that has saved a few pro skiers from losing their life or breaking a few bones.

ALL avalanches are dangerous and even small ones are capable of causing serious injury.

Regardless of whether or not the boarder made a bad decision or not... It sucks when people die in avalanches.
 
That's very sorry to hear. It's really scary how unavoidable avalanches can be...even if you have all the gear you could still be buried too deep to be rescued in time.
 
it's too bad that with all the knowledge and education out there, that people still get caught alone with out beacons. Stupid is as stupid does.
 
yea there is tons of avalanches shown in flicks I donno what you guys are talking about
