fuck ya yonder mountain, just saw them ago the other day from second row, the played for a total of 3 hours with a 10 minute break in between sets, and i got the setlist. It was the best yonder show ive been to
 
yeah bluegrass is pretty cool. It was awesom this summer i was in telluride and there was this bluegrass music festival with some other music too, and there were so many hippies there.
 
the Telluride Bluegrass Festival is huge, I saw a band that won the festival a while back, Bearfoot Bluegrass. The girl guitar player was so fucking hot, as was the upright bass...hot chicks that play music...fuck!

my dad is/was really good friends with them and the guy who plays the banjo(mark van) gave my dad hsi banjo, basically he slays
 
i love bluegrass, ymsb and nickel creek are sick. i guess im more into newgrass though, i dont listen to much older bluegrass.
 
Leftover salmon is soooo sick. I saw them at Red Rocks this summer when they were opening for moe. I had taken like 4 hits of acid and it was one of the sickest experiences of my life
 
bela fleck is always sweet- some of his stuff is more jazzy, fusiony, but his pure bluegrass stuff is the shit. an old school bluegrass badass is doc watson- seriously check him out, so good. hot buttered rum string band is pretty fantastic live. of course, bill monroe is the grandfather of bluegrass, and does some pretty fast and furious pickin. also, the album "will the circle be unbroken" by nitty gritty dirt band- pure gold.
 
Sorry to bust your bubble on Yonder Mountain String Band. there not really blue grass anymore. there origional music was, but there newer stuff is more along the lines of jamgrass, as was the style of the origional greatful dead. dont get me wrong they are still a good band, but when i go to a blue grass concert i want to hear blue grass not jam grass.

For true bluegrass check out these bands. Some of these band are old time bands. old time music is what bluegrass evolved out of. old time being traditional music. country styles such as willie nelson stemmed out of early bluegrass

I could go on and on listing great bluegrass and old time bands for you. if your ever in the Minneapolis area check out Pert Near Sandstone or Trampled by Turtles (pert nears alot better, trampled by turtles is more of a jam grass group like yonder mountain string band is)

 
oh ya bela is my favorite, he kills the bluegrass but you are right, the flecktones are more jazzy

however you should check out the bluegrass sessions :tales from the acoustic planet

its a cd with bela and a whole bunch of bluegrass guys, its really good
 
Sam Bush is unreal, I saw him play a few shows a while back and he blew my mind on the mandolin. That guy tears that instrument up.
 
yeah i i agree that yonder is played... still good... anint no doc watson though.. and LESTER FLATT AND EARL SCRUGGS.. and i ll toss in ozark mtn dardevels. PEETE SEEGER> AND OLD OLD AS SHIT WOODY GUTHRIE. you bow when you here this name!
 
Check out some of Jerry Garcia's side projects too if you like bluegrass .

Jerry plays a mean pedal steel guitar and banjo in the bands: New Riders of the Purple Sage and Old & In the Way.

 
i think of newgrass as being more pop-y, not as traditional sounding- like nickle creek maybe? bluegrass was explained above. jamgrass is music with its roots in acoustic, bluegrass music, but that is used as a starting point for improvisational jamming.
 
Figured I'd bump some bluegrass thread while I bump some bluegrass. Stoked to see RRE and leftover mentioned in here as well as some legit old bluegrass.

Probably my favorite genre of music. Nothing beats dancing barefoot in the sunshine with a beer and a great bluegrass band tearing it up.


On the note of newer stuff, greensky is FINALLY getting the recognition they deserve. Was going to catch them for the first time in a while in denver but my car broke. Stoked they sold out the ogden 2 nights in a row a few months ago. They were that band that was KILLING it but never got the respect.

Yonder was alright imo, jeff austin can slay, but I was never a big fan of dave johnston on the banjo, and I'm all about that banjo. Also felt they over shadowed a lot of other newer bands. People wouldn't listen to anything bluegrass that wasn't yonder. Maybe now that jeff left yonder, other bands will get a chance.

That said I'm interested to see them will allie, cornmeal was fucking sick. Also seen her do some great sit ins with moe. and other bands.

Been bumping a lot of bluegrass recently. Some old stuff, some new stuff.

Caught Sam Bush in a super intimate venue a couple months ago, fucking love that guy. Saw Greensky 2 nights as well.

Been bumping all sorts of stuff though. I don't really care about the lines of true bluegrass anymore as long as it's good. Del, Earl Scruggs, Greensky, Steeldrivers, Dusters, RRE, Bela Fleck.

Idk a bunch of shit. Can never get enough. Might catch a couple grass fests this late spring when I move back east. I love those small old school ones where I feel like I'm the only person between the ages of 10 and 60.

Something about the sun shining, the bass cranked up, stompin some dirt barefoot.

All you ever need:

Railroad Earth, Trout Steak Revival, Greensky Bluegrass, Yonder Mountain String Band, Caribou Mountain Collective, Nickel Creek, The Infamous String Dusters, and Trampled by Turtles.
